Every day for the last few weeks, I have been getting a call from 999-999-9999. I have never answered and they have not left any messages on my voicemail, which I figured they can do if it were really important. I have no clue of who they are, nor do I care but I definitely want them to stop calling.

I have been receiving text messages from  999 999-9999 along with others in our community. The texts are threatening and used to cause fear in the community. It seems to be a ploy by authorities to get people to start talking about unsolved crimes in the area. You can't text back or call them to ask what the hells going on and why your being targeted. They send them to people they know have nothing to do with what they are trying to solve. Now as a result of this  activity some people have chosen to arm themselves for protection and I hope nobody gets hurt from this stupid tactic. I will have telus and other providers monitor my number to try and trace the texts as going to the RCMP only resulted in" someone's just trying to scare you" and they can't do anything about it. They sure can track everything else when they want to though.

We got a pre-recorded robocall on our landline from Name Unavailable, 999-999-9999 today at 1p, EDT.  I let it go into voicemail, since I didn't recognize the number. It identified itself as AETNA Insurance and a problem with my 85 year old mother's prescription card.  I picked up the phone and if I was my mother, to press 1.  I pressed 1 and not to misunderstand, I'm her POA and she ditched AETNA about 4 years ago.  It went on to ask for the last 4 digits of her card number, which are indeed the last four digits of her SSN.  Then it wanted her birthday.  I entered everything as zero's, star and pound signs.  If it had been a legitimate call, I would have been transferred to Customer Service.  As it happened, I confused the computer and it disconnected in the middle of informing me that it wasn't a valid birthday.  Although, it DID accept 0000 as the last 4 digits of her card number.  Hmmmmm.

I got curious and did some research.  There are software services out there that "spoof" caller ID.  The reputable companies only do business with law enforcement agencies, private investigators and collection agencies.  However, there are companies that will allow individuals (including scammers) to use their services.  Case in point:   http://calleridfaker.com and http://www.teleturd.com  And there are probably dozens of others.

Long story short and words to live by, don't give your personal info to anyone, if you did NOT initiate the call.  Your bank, insurance company, doctor, etc will never ask for that info by phone or in an email.  If you're not having an affair with someone, remember that scammers can use this software too!

I got a text from this number the other day that said I won a blackberry and $250000 and gave me an email address to send a message to. I'm not going to send anything. What's weird is I have another text from the same number that I got last year telling me to pay my Telus bill online during the mail strike that happened. That one was a legit message so I don't know if I should trust this new one.
