i got called by this no. too its aanooying i'm with optus too in australia sydney.

This was from a scam trying to convince me to let them use TeamViewer (legitimate S/W) to take over my computer to "fix" viruses (unfortunately for them I've been a software engineer for 20 years, so their technical reasoning didn't quite make the grade :-). Indian sounding accents.

Happened to me too today. Two missed calls from this number, went to my voicemail,no message left.

I got a phone call just then from 0011976000 I said hello a couple of times and just heard an echo of myself then the phone dropped out.

I just got a call from that number, I could hear people in the backround talking couldn't make out what they were saying might be a call centre, I said hello a few times no one answers. I had hung up and then went to use the line they were still there then hung up on me. whats with this number anyone any closer to getting an answer? I'm also in Melborne Austrailia.

Forgot to say they rang the landline not the mobile....

just received a call from this number. I answered but there was no one there. I won't be answering it again if who ever it is calls again

Interesting. I'm from Melbourne, AU. This caller left a message on my answering machine asking "I'm looking for Mr & Mrs (surname)...hello...hello...are you there?...hello...hello.." Then hangs up.
They got the surname correct. We are on the 'do not call' register, which has worked very well for us.

Like previous posters, what I find curious is that the 0011 prefix is for dialling OUT of AU.
There is no country code for 9, 97 or 976.

So...how did the caller get this number to appear as 'their' number????
I realise the world's telephone system is just one heck of big computer network, but it still leaves me asking "How?" :)

That still leaves the area code and phone number as "000".
Mongolia's sole area code is "1", then the local number.

I just received for the 6 times a call from the phone number: 00-1197-6000
I contacted a friend of mine who works for ADF Australian Defence Force and he suspect that the phone number is a Decoy used by China Spy Agency to Spy on Australians. My Military friend said that China is going to try to Rule the countries of Asia and China will Invade Australia. He asked me if I watched the 60 Minutes on 7:30 about 5 weeks ago about the ADF saying that the Australian Prime Minister does not want to tell the Australian people that the Chinese Spy Agency is using Decoy phone numbers to check if the Australian who has their name on the White Pages really lives in the house address shown on the white pages. The Chinese Government has said not long ago that they want half of Australian land for themselves but as soon as they get half of Western Australia and Darwin they will want Melbourne and Sydney and if they does not get it they will kill all Australians living in Melbourne and Sydney. In fact the former President Bush said that if the Chinese Government invades the State of Sydney the United Nations will not help Australia fight the Chinese. Also this year on March the Queen of England said to the British Parliament that England will not help the Australians fight the Chinese Soldiers when they invade Australia. I say, pick up your Knife and Fork and get ready for another kind of Barbique because we are going to have to Barbique the Chinese invaders who wants to steal Australia for themselves.

I get calls at least three or four times a night, every night from that number, and I live in Brisbane! (0011976000) its getting to the point where we just don't answer our phone at nights anymore! What the hell is going on?!

its all a scam! had many issues with the number..had police involved and the number turned out to be creeps from overseas trying to get my money. my advice is change your number as soon as you possibly can. they can get all your details and they will threaten you and scare you! dont risk it and change your number, becuase once they find you they wont stop

China is going to invade Australia? They'd better get in line behind some of our more-local neighbours, first. Also, they might have large military (by numbers) but I'm pretty sure their navy is kind of small...

Checking numbers against white pages street address? (Yawn) What about those people who ONLY have a mobile phone? The churn rate of fixed-line numbers is not small. The number of 'silent numbers' is increasing.

A lot of countries want Australian agricultural land. (In fact, non-Australian-owned companies are already buying up large areas of prime ag' land.)  Most of Australia can't support agriculture. Invasion for purpose of land aquisition = dumb.

Kill all Austrailians living in Melbourne and Sydney. So if you're not Australian living in those cities, you're safe. That's a relief...

Any company that I *might* have a business relationship with, will have no problems offering a local number for you to call them.

PS: You don't HAVE to answer the phone when it rings.
PPS: Answering machines are wonderful vetting tools.
