- MarkWhat is Ofcom doing about silent calls?
On 10 September 2008, Ofcom announced revised measures to help protect people from silent calls. The rules have been put in place to ensure companies who use automated calling systems use them responsibly.
Ofcom’s aim is to significantly reduce the total number of silent calls and to enable people to clearly identify the source of any silent call that they receive. Under Ofcom's rules, calls generated by automatic dialling equipment are required to carry a short recorded information message identifying the source of the call.
Ofcom has carried out a number of investigations into companies who generate high levels of silent calls. You can also complain to Ofcom via the online complaints form. Report the name and number of the company that has made the silent call, plus any other details you may have.
Ofcom continually monitors complaints about silent calls, and may investigate any company which it believes may not be complying with its guidelines.- Caller: Santander
- DannyGot a digitised voice asking me to press 1 if I am (they gave a name) or press 2 if I am someone else.
I remember reading of person who pressed a number on his phone to confirm his identity and the phone exploded killing the person instantly. True story.

- Jonno replies to Agnes| 1 replyOk YES it's Santander. Their tactics are so underhand and downright frustrating. But i have written a VERY strongly worded letter to their head office complaints department which hopefully will put a stop to their obsessive compulsion to harass and terrorise innocent people. See following post for a copy of my letter and feel free to amend to your own details and e-mail them at customer.services@santander.co.uk For those of you who want a personal rant then call their directors office direct on 01908 680227 although bare in mind that unless you put anything in writing then they'll more than likely carry on regardless. I have recorded all phone calls with them to play them at their own game. Isn't it terrible that people have to resort to such drastic actions just to be left in peace.
Good luck in getting these people out of your lives

RE: HARESMENT BY TELEPHONE FROM TELEPHONE NUMBER 08451 262679 / 0113 3440001
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing in relation to telephone calls which i have received from your company which i deem to be personally harassing.
Calls from the number 08451 262679 and 0113 3440001 have been traced through my service provider to be originating from G.E. Money a subsidiary of Santander.
I have verbally requested that these stop on four occasions but i am still receiving calls.
I now require the above listed telephone number to be COMPLETELY REMOVED from all your systems and forbid you to trade or sell MY personal information to any other company or third party. I will permit you to contact me in response to the contents of this letter after which i require my information to be destroyed.
In addition i am requesting from you where you obtained my personal information from and why you continue to call me despite repeated requests for this to cease? I also ask you weather you are of the view, as i am, that it is entirely unethical that these impersonal robotic calls are attempting to encourage me to re-dial you via a Non-Geographical premium rate number.
If you do wish to speak to persons at this address then why do you not have the courage and common courtesy to speak for yourself without hiding behind your robotic systems and premium rate telephone numbers?
Furthermore, i am not a customer of your company and have no association with G.E. Money, Santander Cards, Debenhams Cards nor any other similar financial institution.
I am of the view that your continued telephone calls puts you in breach of the PROTECTION FROM HARASSMENT ACT 1997
If you continue to harass me by telephone you will also be in breach of the COMMUNICATIONS ACT 1997 s127 and i will report you to OFCOM, Trading Standards and the Office of Fair Trading meaning you may be liable to a substantial fine.
Be aware that all telephone calls from your company to the above number are being recorded.
I await a prompt response and action on this matter.
Yours faithfuly
