Got a call from this number last night.... sent me running from the kitchen to answer the phone. I didnt recognise the number so didnt answer.
Just got a call again from the same number about 5 minutes ago, i clicked the phone on as if i had answered it and waited, a mans voice kept saying 'Hello' .... 'Hello'.... 'Hello'..... i ignored him until he finally hung up.
Found this number on your site.
I too an ex-directory to not sure how they got my number, but hey at least we have the choice of answering or not, only drawback is that half the time when something like this calls we are usually in the middle of doing something.
    Thanks for the info here.

We're ex-directory and sick of being bombarded with these sort of calls, particularly on an evening.

this number rings me here in ireland. I never answer. It's pretty simple really, put your phone on silent, save the number in your phone as "robbing fux" and you will never answer it.

Honestly, you people on here are so ignorant. I bet you're all Daily Mail readers.

First off, I work for IPSOS MORI. I work part time, I'm a student and its a fairly dull job. But, its a job and a little understanding goes a long way.

    Some facts for you all:-

    1. IPSOS MORI is excempt from the TPS. The TPS stops sales calls. IPSOS MORI does research. There is nothing to sell. For details contact the TPS and you'll see I'm right.

    2. If IPSOS MORI call you and you dont want to take part dont just say I'm busy. If you say you're busy then I might log a call for another time in the hope that you wont be busy. If you say "I dont want to take part" then I wont call you again. Thats because if you refuse then we are not allowed to call you back. Its part of the rules as laid down by the Market Research Society. Look it up, you'll see I'm right.

    3. We call from the centre in Edinburgh. Its an 0131 number (thats the area code for Edinburgh thickos). How anyone on here thinks this number can charge you when you answer is beyond me. IPSOS MORI pays for the call, you pay for nothing if you answer. Its the exact same system thats been in place since the telephone was invented. The caller pays for the call. Even if you want to call me back at work just reverse the charges and IPSOS MORI will pay for it, thats how much the company doesn't want you to pay for anything. Try it and you'll see how right I am.

    4. There are times when I cant discuss why I'm phoning to a person other than the one I wish to talk to. Its called data protection. Theres a piece of legislation out there that stops me from doing this. Look into it and you'll see how right I am.

The level of conspiracy and ill informed advice on here is truly staggering. I work for a company that is doing genuine research and in the vast majority of cases its for government departments. All we are doing is asking you for your opinions. We only call between 9am and 9pm Mon to Fri and 10am-7pm on Sat and Sun, never later.

If you dont want to do it then just say so. Dont fudge the question. Just answer your phone and say "no thanks". Thats it, 15 secs of your time. A lot less time than it took for you to ignore the number several times then get angry then go online then google the number then get more angry then read 17 pages of ill informed comments then post on here saying its a scam organised by illegal immigrants who are trying to people traffic your daughter and steal your identity and then get more angry and then keep ignoring the phone while we call you again and again and you sit fuming during Coronation Street. What sounds easier?

Most of us are students just trying to earn a few sheckles while we hopelessly mire ourselves further into debt while trying to gain our degrees. We're not scamming you and we try to always be polite towards the people we speak to. Maybe a bit of manners back wouldnt be a bad thing from time to time?

    Love,

    A call centre worker xx

    Dear Employee,

Totally agree with you about manners.   You call those of us who use this web site "ignorant", "thickos", "ill informed".    Presumably that passes as manners from students in Edinburgh these days?

Make a start on learning genuine manners by refusing to make unsolicited phone calls.

I only just posted and read the diatribe from IpsosausagesMorion posted on 30th October.  In  view of this I have sent a further email to IpsosMori informing them that I will now invoice them £120 any time they phone me and for whatever reason.

Ipsos Mori has a great number if interviewers. To a large extent we are staffed by students (even some high school students), although of course not exclusively. Nothing against students of course, but it's just a pointer that there are a greater proportion of younger employees, and those that do the job out of necessity (while at college/Uni etc). No interviewers are on contract - it's casual/temp work. IM work under contract from other companies/organisations; if IM don't get work, the interviewers don't get work. There are a very large number of employees - into the hundreds. While making sure that everyone does their job 100% accurately is always difficult, in this work situation it can be more difficult than most (not that that stops IM from constantly monitoring interviewers to make sure they do their job as they should). Unfortunately, there are slip-ups. Voicemails (silent or otherwise) get left - this should never happen. Sometimes someone refusing to take part in a survey is coded inaccurately and called again. These instances are of course regrettable - no company wants its employees to do things they shouldn't! Usually these errors are due to new staff not having become accustomed to the work (new staff start on a continuos basis).

We work from 9am to 9pm Mon - Fri, and 10am to 7pm Sat/Sun. As we call 'the public' (as well as businesses and public organisations), evenings and weekends are the best time to catch people. The numbers (for most jobs) are randomly generated by computer (if specific areas are required - a survey of people in say, Norfolk - the computer is given an/some area code(s) and the last 4 or 5 or 6 digits are randomly generated). If we have been given names to contact, usually letters are sent out to say we will be calling (and what it's about). In these instances (named contacts), quite often we can't tell anyone else (even family members) what the survey is about due to DPA (Data Protection Act). It's the law. No matter what you may think ("you just don't want to tell us"), it *is* the law - we have to abide by it.

If we call there's no answer, the number goes back into the 'pool' to be recalled. If you don't want to take part *SAY SO*. To say "I'm busy now", I don't have time now", "Not at the moment", "I'm just eating/cooking/showering", "I'm too busy" doesn't mean "don't call me again" - you might want it to, *but you're not saying it*. It is not for us to "assume" that you mean something different. In life, if someone is busy or has no time for something, then you try them another time when they're hopefully not busy, or they have time, or aren't eating/cooking/showering. It's a survey. A voluntary survey. If you don't want to take part, say "I don't want to take part". Simple.

Do we pay *you* for taking part in surveys? No (well, sometimes we do on longer surveys, but only rarely. This - if it happens - is decided by whatever company or organisation commissions the research). We conduct hundreds, thousands, tens-of-thousands, sometimes hundreds-of-thousands of surveys. It would mean only very rich companies or organisations would be able to commission surveys - he who has the most money wins. Obviously *you* don't want *your* life dictated by multinational corporations or big businesses, do you?

If you are ex-directory, it means you are not listed in the phone book - nothing more. It does not mean people are not allowed to call you. It doesn't mean your number is "hidden" from everyone. Anyone can dial random numbers into a phone and call you if they dial the *right* numbers. They are not forbidden, they are not barred. Again (as below) market research companies don't want to exclude people who are ex-directory - why should you not have a say in what products or services you use in your daily life? If we call you, you can refuse to take part in that survey. You can also request to never be called again, for any survey. To do this we *have* to keep your number on file. Why? Because, as mentioned above, numbers are randomly generated. The only way to guarantee *your* number is not called again is to match any list of newly-generated numbers against our list of "never call again" numbers. If your number is there, it is removed. This is the only way to do it.

TPS - Telephone Preference Service: As pointed out, the TPS does not cover Market Research companies. It is based on Government legislation. If the Government decides to include Market Research companies in the TPS in the future, maybe there will be no more Market Research - who knows?

Rules on DPA/TPS/ex-directory = *not* IM or market research companies' creation. They are laws/legislation we must abide by. We have no choice.

Look, ultimately, Market Research helps companies or organisations provide a better service to the public by asking their opinions. The most effective way to find out what people want/don't want, like/don't like, etc is to ask them. They can't just speak to people who actively ask to be called for a survey as you are then biasing your results in favour of whatever type of people actively ask to be called. If that's (for example) 5% of the population, do you want oil companies, food companies, clothes companies, the NHS, your local council, etc to provide or improve their products or services to you based on what that 5% say? IM, for whatever faults (perceived or otherwise) it has, is just another company going about its legitimate business. It provides a necessary service (despite what some people may think), and also flexible work for many people - particularly those whose work-pattern is "abnormal" or those with other commitments (family/study/etc).

Oh, and if I call and you don't want to take part? Say "I don't want to take part". That'll make both our lives easier. Thanks.

    Peace

    Chris

Almost forgot (as it has been - and will be - brought up, I'm sure):

Any data we ask for about age, postcode, home ownership, etc is to make sure we speak to a good cross-section of people/society - nothing more. Your information is not passed/sold on. How long to you think a company as big as Ipsos Mori could exist if they did something as illegal as that!?!

    Peace

Twice out of the shower today to answer the phone to find no one on the other end. Checked the caller ID and found the number 0131 301 2940. Goggled the number and found this website. I Googled IPSOS MORI and called their London phone number . Receptionist apologised and said my number would be removed from their data base within 24 hours.
