Got a couple of missed calls from this number in the last couple of days. My mum also got one and I happened to be there and took the call. Wanted me to do something with the computer but I said no, I had no idea who I was talking to and if there was any problem I would arrange for someone to call rather than talk to a stranger making a cold call. Person got a bit annoyed with me. I eventually hung up

likewise, phone rang first thing this morning from that number, when went to answer it went dead, but it rang again couple of hours later. Indian (perhaps) sounding guy at other end of an absolute [***] line. same ol computer stuff, implying that they onto computers running slow and that he doing survey for microsoft and asking various other stuff, which i'd write here, only the line so [***], that i couldnt tell you what he was asking.  I smelled it to be complete BS and figured Microsoft not operate in such a manner, and from what I am finding in research since, seems I am right.  this number is coming from a computer .. ie .. they are phoning through a hosting computer system, and not from a direct line, so from my understanding, one would not be able to return the call, as would only make contact with some computer.
WARNING - from what I have found so far, this phone call is a spam !!  it is to get you to either download some program to help be a solution to your computer problems which will in turn hack your computer, or is a way to get your a hold of your credit card details over the phone, and they are persistent!  JUST HANG UP!!
alas this message will only be seen by a small minority, but even if helps a few, then job done =]

I too keep getting calls from this number, which is why I looked up this site, it becomes pretty annoying after the tenth time. I dont know who its from, when I did answer nobody responded. But i think I answered it before, and they said my name incorrectly, as my address is a persons name like John Smith
Lane, however they asked me *is this John Smith*, as I am incorrectly listed in the Phonebook
as John Smith, which leads me to believe that my number was selected from the phonebook. Whether
its random or not i do not know.

Got a call from this number 009476632176 - this morning at 11.05 (30.6.2010). I answered it but no one replied and I hung up. I started receiving these calls about 3-4 weeks. I only picked up one of the calls and there was music in the background but no one spoke and I hung up. Since I started making notes, I have also received the following calls:- 004419476632176  at 12.45 on 28.6.10 and the same number at 11.43 and 20.28 on 25.6.2010.

I rang COMREG to explain but, while very helpful, they cannot act on calls received outside of Ireland. They suggested it might be worth calling the National Consumer Agency on 1890 432 432 or 01- 4025555 who might be able to help.

I am not ex-directory and therefore my number appears in the phone book. However, despite "opting out" of marketing calls, I still receive them. COMREG have told me that companies are obliged to use the online directory where they will see the "opt out" symbol and if I get a call from within Ireland I can make a complaint to them and they will follow it up. I found COMREG to be extremely helpful and they are also very efficient - it is just a pity their remit does not extend outside of Ireland. Help!!

... just a further note to my post above.

My call today was from 00 9476632176. It definately didn't have anything code after the 00 and before the 947.. etc.

All my other calls come from :- 00  44  19476632176  etc which looks like a London number. Though I didn't make a note of it, I have also noticed that the very last digit of the "London" number changes - so it looks like "they" have several lines.

Is there anything I can do to stop these calls????!!!

    I am in Dublin.

These calls come several times every day for the last few weeks.

The 19476632176 part of the number is the same but the first few digits change with different calls.

I answered yesterday to deal with them. Indian man. Very polite. Asked by name for the person in the house in whose name the telephone is registered with Eircom. He then rolled in to a speech about computer viruses and I could not stop him !

He seemed to know what operating system we were using. I suppose a chancer could nearly guess that but it is a slippery way to get information out of you.

I told him that we no longer had a computer at this address and that we had moved and that all of our computer services are being handled by an I.T. company anyway. That brought the conversation to a polite end.

    TWO THOUGHTS ;

    1. Where did he get the Eircom account holder's name from ? The details he had are not those in the telephone book ? Are they working from a list and where did they get it ?

    2. As these guys are from outside the country the opt out system for marketing calls cannot be applied to them as someone else has already pointed out. However, if this "telephone bullying" keeps up I wonder if the numbers from which they ring can be barred or blocked ?

I had the same type of call from "PC Cure" (0194 76632176) - asking me to do all kinds of things on on "Windows PC". After about 10 minutes, I told him that I am a computer engineer with a Ph.D. in computing was not running Windows. I suspect that he was based in India and didn't know the meaning of some of the things I shouted at him down the phone. Please treat these people with extreme caution.

I don't think that this was a call from UK companies called "PC Cure".

Yip , i've been getting the same in Dublin, 3 calls today so far. Its not a prefixed number, as in they are calling from a Skype based ( or similar) system.Just checked with my phone provider and off course they are a scam but are working now from locations all over the world. They buy your number from other scam artists and continue to plague you with one sort of shite to another. The last one i talked to got an earfull of obscenities from me, it's not going to stop them ringing but i felt a hell of a lot better.

Have just had a call from this number who stated that I had a problem with my computer that they could sort out.  I told them I had no problem with my computer to which they replied 'How did I know'. They knew far more than I did.  The person speaking was obviously not English and having heard of such scams I impolitely told him what he could do!

I got a call today. it is undoubtedly a scam. the indian sounding man told me that my computer was slow (which it isn't). It would be good to know who these guys are and expose them. I've read that they lead you to a website which will infect your computer to make it accessible to them. So glad I checked this online also. Beware.

I've just had a call from them. I picked up before I had checked the number properly. No reply. Why would they not answer? What can they gain from phoning people and then not answering?

My advice is DON'T HANG UP when you get a call from these people.

Luckily, I had some time to kill after catching the call on the 3rd attempt today (after 2 dead lines)

    "Hello Mr. XXXXX

I am calling all home computer users to check the vulnerability of the computer. I am calling from (company slipped past me, sorry) to help all windows users. (Ok, this is a pretty safe bet, assume a very large percentage of people use Windows at home) Is your computer running slowly sometimes? Maybe the internet is not as fast as it could be?"

    "Yes, it is."

"Ok. Great. I can help with this. Are you in front of your computer?"

    "No."

    "Please go to your computer"

    "Ok." (Delay a few moments)_

"What do you see on the screen?"

    "Nothing."

    "Nothing?"

    "No, it's black."

    "Is it on?"

    "No"

"Please turn on your computer sir."

"Oh. Ok." (Delay a few moments more)

    "Is it on now?"

"It's starting up. Please wait it is incredibly slow, which is why you're calling me yes?"

    "Yes sir, it is."

"Sorry, still booting up." (Delay as long as possible!)_

    "Ok, I will hold sir"

"Sorry, it's really slow this morning, i'm glad you called when you did."

"Ok sir. Is it ready now?"

    "Ready?"

"Yes. Do you see a start button?"

"A start button? What's that? The button I turn the power on with?"

"No no sir. On your screen. A start button"

    "What on the monitor?"

"Yes, on the screen, usually in the bottom corner."

"No, the button to start my monitor is on the side of it."

"No, no sir! Actually displayed on your monitor! Not the button to turn your monitor on"

    "Oh sorry. Excuse me."

"That's ok. Do you see it now?"

    "No."

"Why not? Is it not in the bottom of the screen?"

    "I can't see it."

"Which windows operating system are you using? Windows 7? Vista?"

    "I'm using a Mac"

    Hang up.

Well, to be fair, he didn't actually ever ask me if I used windows, he just said he was helping all windows users!!

Length of call time? Just under 10 minutes. I consider that 10 minutes of my life well spent! :)
