Just had a thought re my previous message - I've been on home insurance comparison websites this afternoon and given my home telephone number to obtain competitive quotes.  Could this be a coincidence?

I keep getting calls from this number. I don't answer. I am getting a lot of calls lately from all sorts of strange 080 numbers as well, to both my landline and my mobile. Is there anyway these can be reported?

just had a call today 10/aug 2010 from 01947 6632176 the caller knew my name and address unfortunately my son answerd the call due to me being out of the house in work, the caller asked about a computer even commented of the pet dog we have when he heard it in the background, asked about his school and where his parents work this made him very dubious and the indian sounding guy hung up when my son wouldnt answer his questions when i got in i went to a public phone box and rang the number which only got me a message saying this service is not available anymore, lickily though the phonebox gave me my money back lol then decided to put a search on the internet which i found out the area code is a whitby code but looking at the number i think there is too many digits for it to be a united kindgom number, i would like to know where these scamers get personal information from i,e knowing the address and household name for the number rang and is there anybody out there with any ideas on how to stop these people.

Immediately after I had answered the phone this afternoon there was a click and the line was cut, which is rather unnerving. I dialled 1471 expecting to hear "The caller withheld their number", but found that the number was given as 019476632176. As mentioned above, it has too many digits to be a Whitby UK number. Someone above mentions that theirs started with a double zero, in which case it takes the form of a U.S. number, specifically somewhere in Michigan. Curiouser and curiouser.

We've been called twice today. The first time the caller asked me if my computer was running slow. When I said that it wasn't, he hung up. I had asked him who was calling and he muttered something in an Asian accent that sounded like some IT company I had never heard of. When I dialled 1471 the number was unavailable. Later my partner answered the phone. The person calling said he could help with the problems we were having with our Windows PC. After sounding enthusiastic for a minute or two, my partner then said that we don't have a Windows PC. He received some abuse from the caller, before the caller hung up. This time the number was available and was the number above

Just had a call from this number said they were calling from "your local computer repair shop about your computer" I told them I didn't have a computer as it was obvious they were from a call centre. They then asked what did I have?! I replied what do you mean what do I have and who are you anyway. It was at this point they hung up on me. hopefully they wont call again. Im registered with TPS so annoyed they rang at all.

3 calls today - line went dead every time after a second or two. Dialled 1471: the first two occasions "the caller did not leave their number" but the 3rd traced the call to this number.

10 call a days from these [***]. I'm sure there are those that fall for it otherwise they wouldn't be so persistant. I used to frustrate them before rudely telling them to go away. Please be warned, it can be very costly.

There’s a scam goin’ on that implicates Microsoft being run from Indian call centres, report the Guardian.

The scam starts with a call which goes through the usual security checks before saying “I’m calling for Microsoft. We’ve had a report from your internet service provider of serious virus problems from your computer.”

Naturally, they then tell you that your computer is going to die or sprout legs and kick you to death or something should the problem go unsolved.

If they’ve succeed in convincing you to keep talking, you’ll be directed to your computer and asked to open a program called “Windows Event Viewer”. To the average user, it looks like a troubling and long list of errors, some labelled “critical”.

“Yes, that’s it,” says the caller. “Now let me guide you through the steps to fixing it.”

You’re then sent to a website and told to download a program that hands over remote control of your computer and the caller “installs” various “fixes” for the problem. Then you need to cough-up £185.

Of course, there’s was never anything wrong with your computer (well, unless you count that weird porn you’ve been looking at) and naturally, the caller does not work for Microsoft. Microsoft aren’t in the habit of ringing people up are they? Sadly, anyone falling for this will have handed over every bit of data from their computer.

This scam has been going since 2008 and grew hugely this year. It is being run from call centres based in Kolkata, by teams believed to have access to sales databases from computer and software companies who seem to be using the phonebook to get names to call.

When contacted about the scams, Microsoft said it was “currently investigating a series of instances in which the business practices of an organisation within the Microsoft Partner Network [that] have given rise to significant concerns from a number of sources. We take matters such as these extremely seriously and will take any action that is appropriate once our investigation is complete.”

The company has noticed the problem. “Microsoft does not make unsolicited phone calls to help you fix your computer,” it says on its website. “If you receive an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft Tech Support, hang up. We do not make these kinds of calls.”

Call made at 7:16pm on Friday 20th August 2010
I answered a call from this number at my parents' house and it was a man with an Indian/Pakistani accent saying that he was from a company called Online PC Care and that he was calling about a problem about my computer. Knowing straight away that this was a cold call trying to sell me something I decided to play with him a little bit.

Caller: Hello Mr XXXXX, I'm calling from Online PC Care about a computer problem you are having.
[my parents do have a PC but I called his bluff anyway]
    Me: What computer?
Caller: Your Windows operating system computer.
[my parents' PC has Ubuntu operating system instead of Microsoft Windows]
Me: But we don't have Windows on our PC.
Caller: Well this is about a virus that you don't know about yet, and we can provide you with antivirus software that will stop this virus from infecting your PC.
[I'd heard enough already so I changed the subject]
Me: Is that so? Can you tell me how you got my number please?
Caller: We got your number from your local directory.
Me: We're not in the phone directory though, and we're registered with the Telephone Preferential Service so you shouldn't be calling me. [It turns out that my parents are still in the phone book for some reason, but never mind]
Caller: In that case, a friend of yours must have given us your number in order for us to help you.
Me: Why would they do that?! Can you repeat the name of your company for me please?
Caller: I am calling you from Online PC Care.
Me: Can you also give me the contact details for Online PC Care then please?
[The caller got a bit flustered at this point and said:]
Caller: You'll have to call us back for that.
[The caller then hung up, in order to proceed with cold calling other unsuspecting victims.]

I dialled 1471 and this is the number that had called 019476632176.
