Guys, Calm down - I received a call from my friend in Switzerland to my virgin mobile 02 8209 4700 - . I missed the call and I therefore waited for him to call baclk. He called me back on my VOIP number and it was showing as witheld. I then spoke to him and he confirmed that he tried calling me on the mobile - But I was just waking up... Anyway he is using a calling card in Switzerland - and this nuber 02 8209 4700 - is the gateway number to access Australia...

I got three missed calls last night from this number. I rang it back and I got "this number is disconected" then I tryed again and I received a fax tone. I was greatfull to find this info. So now I know it was from overseas. I am not worried about it anymore.

this number rang my mobile at an unpleaseant time (11pm). Reading all your comments makes me think this happens when an overseas caller (time difference and hence odd calling times)uses one of those cheap pre - dial - codes.

It is the out-line, local line or whatever you want to call it for Skype calls from international calling cards. It can be anyone. I receive calls from a friend in Thailand on this number quite often.

But then why is it selecting these mobile numbers ? and why is it continuously calling them. This have been going on now for a few weeks for me.

I got a call from this number this afternoon and let it go through to my voicemail. It ended up being a friend from the USA who was using a calling card. I have no idea why this number showed up though.

I just got back into Melbourne this morning, and was very annoyed when this person (??) called me as I was sleeping off the jet lag!!
Aaaaah! Weird how most of the people that have gotten it are from Melbourne!

every time my friend calls me from Norway this number pops u it is obviously completely different 2 hers. i thought it was an australian number with a new south wales area code, maybe the calls get routed through there somehow??

I have received a call from 02 92084700 at 4.35pm on 5 January 2009. I called back twice, but got fax dial tone and some strange tone.

I received 2 calls on New Years Eve from this number and I see a lot of complaints here about the same number .....I would like to know if you are any closer to catching the nuisance what is actually being done about it if any thing?

The facts:

The number is an incoming VOIP trunk line. Trunk lines carry large amounts of calls. This line is in use by the major voip carrier - skype.

Skype route phone calls via the internet, providing people with a way to make cheap calls internationally.

Some of you are being hit by automated services (the same as I am), using this cheap way to figure out when your handsets are active. By answering the call, your pickup is logged as an appropriate time to call you in the future.

The best bet if you are receiving these types of calls..

a) have your carrier ban the number
b) use call filtering on your handset
c) Have a great deal of fun by screwing with the teleidiots on the other end of the line.

I got a call from this number new years eve also. Mine came from India from a call centre for a debt collection agency called Pacific Finance..they collect years old Visa/Mastercard/Bankcard debts. They know I don't answer calls marked 'anonymous', so snuck this one in...sneaky little suckers! Hope this helps out a few ppl..cheerz.

I got this call as it was a call from my uncle in HK

I received 5 missed calls in a row from this number between 1pm and 2pm yesterday and a 5.30am call this morning. When i call back it sounds like a fax.  Very frustrating.
