It's TV licensing, my service advisor was letting me know that I had missed a weeks payment. They do this also for missed direct debits.

Yes, we've just had a call on my partner's mobile. We have an up-to-date TV licence (in my name) and my partner has never bought any TV/PC card or other licensable equipment. And yes, they asked her to confirm our address. When she refused and asked whether there was a web site on which she could check the number and ring back, he just hung up. My guess is this is a scam. If it is legit, it's outrageous.

I have sent a formal enquiry to TV Licensing to see if we can find out the truth.

This is definetly tv licensinsing. Kind lady said i was a bit behind. It is a call centre so you probably get a delay, so thats why they dont speak immediately.

I have just spoken to TV Licensing, on their 0845 7 289 289 number, as shown on their correspondence. Spoke to a very pleasant chap called Martin who confirmed  that 0300 555 0285 is definitely their number. It is an outgoing number. They also use 0300 555 0286 as an incoming number, which is an incoming number. They are used as being cheaper than when calling 0845 no.

However, be aware that TV Licensing will up your month's payment if you fall behind. In my case from £12.95 to £19.00. However, seeing as I pay for 2/3 months at a time, I was able to negotiate payments back to my normal schedule.

It was unfortunate that when the 0300 555 0285 called me on my land-line, having failed to answer them on my mobile, I was asked, very brusquely, by the operative, "Since when  have you been a TV Licensing worker if you query the 0300 number?" It's my job, as a computer engineer, to query all unknowns on incoming calls, etc. That's when I called TV Licensing on their advertised 0845 number.

    ***** 0300 790 6086 TV LICENSING RIP OFF NUMBER *****

I just got my Vodafone at Home landline bill.  Noticed that I had been charged 86p for a call that I made to 0300 790 6086 on 2 June 10.  (I thought that 0300 numbers were free?).  I keep a spreadsheet of my ingoings and outgoings and I put comments on when I make payments.  I just checked my comments for June and this is what I had put:

"2jun10 - I phoned 0300 790 6086 @ 14:09 (eventually) spoke to 'Y*******, who advised that he could send me a dd form, but that I wouldn't be able to use my TV in the meantime!! Then he put me through to E*** who set up a payment card. She said that I would be covered immediately if I made a payment of 5.60.  I couldn't find my bank card (it was in the safe), so I rang back minutes later on 0300 555 0300 <1> and spoke to Phil who took the payment of 5.60 (auth code 617007) and will send the card out".

The 'eventually' bit shows that they must have kept me on hold for ages (according to my VAH bill, I was on for 19m 17s - I normally would have timed it, but I genuinely thought the call was free).  The second call I made cost me 15p, so all in all it has cost me a quid extra to pay the TV Tax that we shouldn't have to even pay in the first place!!!!!!!!!  I am definitely going to complain OFCOM about this!

I got a call from that number they say there the tv licences and say that u need to pay them money cause Your in arrears but ino for a 100 % that im not. and they want u to pay with card over the phone. i told him no way i dont pay with my card on the phone but they take no for an answer so i hung up. and the clicking noice is them recordeing the telephone call. Just incase they dont get your card number right. its a scam. dont pay them anything on the phone and they will ask you for your postcoad when you answer dont give them it. They should have all your deltails they dont need to ask you it. So dont give them any sort of information.. its a SCAM. x

Yes them numbers should be free. But i wrong them from my mobile i was on the phone for 20 mins and 15 sec and it took all my credit (£15) Make sure you keep checking your card that you payed with. Go to your bank and stop them from taking anymore money out. They can hear you on the phone but you hear ringing and there recording you so that anything you say they have it and you phone bill is going sky high.

this is the correct company as known as t.v. licencing and if you look on there site they advertise the same phone number there to get in touch, usually they phone to remind you of payments owed if you've left them your contact number, but they're criminal individuals out there who give false details which could explain why ppl without t.vs get the calls or just to check premises to see if you need there service.I mean how many of you can afford to pay the 1000 pound fine ? I agree with most though tis outrage that just because bbc wont use adverts is the reason we pay and with that money they show rubbish.or repeats. but end of day these ppl are doing legitimate work and don't deserve this aggression some give.not alike to con artists that you get calls from ! obviously those that dont recognise the number is because it maybe the department for ppl who pay by tv license card in small amounts for needy ppl !! after all the number to pay by direct debit is 0300 555 0286!!  aye sounds about right ,the collection centre number ,knew I knew it from somewhere ... oops
