This is actually a generic DWP outbound telephone number. I work for the pension service in Newcastle and whenever I get a call from any department this 0800 0232076 number is the outbound call ID. DWP includes the Pension Service and Jobcentre Plus. So you may get a phone call from this number if you have a pension or a benefit, or if you work for the DWP. It's definitely legitimate.

To the person who said they asked for details: That's standard practice. Because of data protection, any government department has to confirm your identity before they disclose any information.

Its a DWP callback number. Not all staff are aware that this number is what shows on the customers phone. If you are on any pensions or benefits and you get a call from this number, and are worried about giving out details, ask the caller for their name and extension and call your benefit office on the number you usually use and ask to be put through. It is a genuine number though.

It's definitely the Pension Service. I work for them and if we call a customer and they do not pick up, but then dial 1471 that is the number it gives, even though that is not the number of our office. I work at the Future Pension Centre in Newcastle.

Had two missed calls over the past couple of days from this number on our ex directory line.  If it's genuine why don't they leave a message.  Early evening yesterday (21.4.10) & lunchtime today (22.4.10) - Sounds a bit suspicious to me.

It is a genuine DWP number . I got called back on this number  by a lovely lady I spoke to earlier in the day who is helping to produce my self-requested pensions forecast and who was seeking further information from me to facilitate it.

    Hi everyone,

My mum got a missed call from this number.

We Googled it and found this site.

I rang the number a couple of times with 141 in front to withhold mine and it went straight to a pre-recorded message (polite female voice) saying 'You were called by the Pension Service but were unavailable - if we will still need to contact you we will call you back'.  I tried again without withholding my number and a Scottish guy in a call center picked up the phone straight away.  They obviously only answer if your number is passed on by Caller ID.

Today is a Bank Holiday (August 30th) and when I phoned the official Pension Credit helpline number on 0800 99 1234 (http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Pensionsandretire ... redit/DG_180167) their message said they are closed for the Bank Holiday and will reopen tomorrow! (Tuesday)  GO FIGURE!

I think this number is definitely a scam - private company pretending to be the official government pensions agency. Perhaps trying to get people to cash in and sell their private pension to them cheaply!  Beware!

Do not give any of your private information like advised by some people previously.

The messages posted on here saying the number is genuine have probably been posted by employees of said scam company!

if this is a legitimate number then there is something fishy going on.  i have had multiple missed calls from this number to my mobile but never a call to my land line.  i have managed to pick up a couple of these calls and the phone hangs up after a short while and nothing is said.  I have no reason to be getting calls from the pension service and ne message is ever left.  The phone only rings for a short period.

I am not disputing if the number is genuine or not i am just listing my experiences which are not in line with how i expect the pension service to run.  Maybe there is a glitch in the system somewhere that is causing these annoyingly odd misdials.

My wife works for DWP and when she rings me that's the number that shows. She sometimes works at bank hols, and the lines in are closed, but she can dial out to process claims with folk. Its not a scam, just the outside line for the DWP centre.

People need to listen!! As said by many other people this is a GENUINE pension service number. My mum works for them and calls me a lot from this number, there's no scam. It's not fishy that you can't call it back because it's an outbound number. Different people deal with the claims coming in than those who call people back.

My word there are some paranoid people responding. It is indeed DWP, to test it, ring DWP itself and ask them to call you back, when they do, this is the number that shows.

Not everything is a scam and a large amount of people above appear to take pleasure in trying to scare people with. I can't imagine having the time to spend to fabricate such wild scenarios.

This morning at 11.44 am I received a strange phone call from someone claiming to be from the Works and Pensions department asking lots of questions including details of my bank account and how much I had in it.  I didnt give any details apart from the bank name and my balance.
No account numbers were mentioned.  A lot of questions were quite personal and I was very upset which is not good as I am a pensioner and do not need upset. The man in question declined to leave his name and said a letter will arrive in the post eventually.  I phoned my DWP office in Motherwell who confirmed this number is not one of theirs and not to worry as maybe a scam?
