I've had a barrage of calls from this number, but I've never answered. A few months ago I answered and a man with a scouse accent said he was from Barclays, and wanted to fix me up with a telephone consultation with a senior colleague on a certain day and time. I accepted but the guy phoned about 2 hours late,so I never answered. Believe me,they are just a bunch of mavericks who need reigning in by Barclays. They must scan Barclays account holders to see whether there's any money to invest and make fat commissions for themselves. Barclays want a kick up the @rse!

I was called from 08000852652 at 7.50pm this evening (17th Nov). The person claimed to be from Barclays and said they were conducting an account review and also apologised for calling so late and it would only take 5 mins. They then asked me to verify my mothers maiden name and I said how do I know you are from Barclays, the person then told me that he could tell me my card number and that if I rang 1471 there would be a message from Barclays confirming the call was legit. This guy also said that they were trying to save customers from going to the branches hence the phone trials. I just said NO-WAY and hung up. If this is Barclays then they should be stopped harassing people, taking into account that they always say they never call anybody or e-mail them regarding there account.

    Just a nonentity
Recently I've had a lot more calls from this number. I never answer them. Judging by the majority of posts here, the best plan is to ignore them or to whack Barclays round the ear with a large, wet fish.

This number called and I missed it. Glad I did after reading this - I don't have a barclays account so I'd be very suspicious!

I played along and confirmed my date of birth and last two letters of my mother's maiden name. Those are hardly things people can impersonate me with. The call itself was from Barclays and very likely legit as they were able to tell me my balance in the account.

The call itself was a "just the usual" sales pitch about a) opening an online savings account, b) getting life insurance (since they teamed up with some insurance company), c) whether I was happy with Barclays.

Declined both offers and said I was happy with what I have (I'm a EU student and really only use my account so I can pay people in the UK and own a local debit card) and the woman I spoke to was happy with that.

The entire thing took less than five minutes, and at least now their central calling computer has flagged my number as "done" and I'll be left alone.

So there you have it: nothing illegal coming from this number. Anyone saying so is just trying to scare people.

4 bliddy calls from this number today already.  One way to annoy customers is to call them continually like this.  If I am ever quick enough to actually talk to somebody, they really will get a flea in their ear.  2nd January - you would think they had better things to do than just annoy me!

I was woken, from a lay in, by a call from this number at about 8:00 am Saturday morning. There was nobody there when I answered. This happened twice more during the day (the calls not waking up!) and each time despite a quicker answer there was nobody there. Irritating and very unprofessional!

This is an automated dialler from Barclays - it dials people who have not had a sales/marketing/review call from Barclays for about a year. Once it has got you on its list it is persistent and will call at random times of day and random days including weekends. If you answer it tries to pass you to a call centre drone who has a sales & marketing script disguised as an annual account review. If no drone is free it just hangs up and marks you as still needing a call. If a drone is available you are put through and then they try to sell you Barclays insurance for home or car etc or a Barclays Mortgage by looking at who your current direct debits are with - so it is a fishing exercise theyt are on. Be polite and firm and ask that they flag your account as requiring no contact via phone or email for sales marketing or reviews.

i get calls from this number on a regular basis, sometimes 3 or 4 times in a day including weekends. if this was genuine, they would know when i last spoke to them and what i spoke to them about but they don't. also when i dial the number noone answers. barclays told me agea ago that they don't make calls like this where they ask for personal information etc. they should be proving their identity not asking me to prove mine. never divulge any of your banking details to these people, just hang up and inform your bank. i am going to ask BT to put a block on the number.

Got a call from this number a few weeks ago - got asked the security questions stated here.  I asked the adviser to confirm some proof of THEIR identity, which they did, by giving me the last 6 numbers of my debit card, as well as 2 numbers from my account number.  Was still slightly suspicious, as this didn't seem like "much" to me.  Passed security eventually, and the call turned out
    to be genuine.

The adviser tried to flog me a monthly savings account.  I accepted simply because it didn't cost me anything, the rate wasn't too bad, and I might actually use it one day...

...logged onto my online banking and couldn't see the savings account straight away!  So alarm bells rang, and I googled this number, and called Barclays, who could see the new account, and told me not to panic.

Lo and behold, the account was visible online in the next couple of days, and I received the paperwork in the post shortly afterwards.  So it turned out to be legit (and also on the call, all of my balances, personal details, etc. were confirmed back to me at my request once security was passed).

I think it's a useful service IF they continue to offer FREE products and services on this number.  I'm happy for a bank to "sell" to me if the product is genuinely better, if it doesn't cost me anything, and if there's no catch.

I don't know if I'll be called back, but I'll probably answer and continue with the call, IF I can once again verify the caller's identity.

In my experience, 100% legit, but will continue to be security conscious anyway.

Just had a call from this number.
Which is annoying enough to get a sales call at random times of day - The hanging up on answer is particularly bad. That was supposed to be stopped, but its still so prevalent that OFCOM are (rightly) tightening up on it.
What is even more annoying though is that My number is registered with the TPS and both my wife and I have told BT several times (and increasingly certain terms..) that we do NOT want to receive sales calls.

Suggest anyone receiving silent, (or sales, if you are registered with TPS and have told Barclays you don't want sales) calls from this (or other) numbers to report it to your service provider (eg BT) and to OFCOM.

    re: post 26 mins ago:
oops - I meant of course, that we have told BARCLAYS that we do not want to receive sales calls.
(TPS only applies to "completely" cold calls. companies that you already have a relationship with (eg a bank account with) are entitled to call you unless you have told them otherwise)

Calls from this number DO NOT ASK YOU FOR ACCOUNT INFORMATION.

They will ask for your D.O.B, and last 2 letters of your mother's maiden name.

    NOT your account number
    NOT your sort code
    NOT your debit card number
    NOT your address

If you do not want to talk, ASK TO BE REMOVED FROM THE CALL LIST.

Don't panic, don't stress, and don't exaggerate that agents are asking you for your 'account details', because they ARE NOT.

The agents are just doing a job, and this security aspect is the worst part, for all parties involved.  Pass it if you want to talk, ask to be removed if not.

Agents are working on an automated dialler, and have NO CONTROL over who they call.  Don't take the call personally, and don't MAKE it a personal issue for the agent!
