Scam warning for residents
Posted on: Friday 8 February 2013
Torfaen Trading Standards are warning residents of a scam phone call that has been going around the area.
Some Sky customers may receive a call from a lady saying she represents Sky TV. She then goes on to explain that due to a reorganisation of service personnel Sky has been able to reduce the "service maintenance" charges. A new telephone number for maintenance is given (0845 241 0885) and there is a request for your bank details to alter your current contract.
Sky have confirmed that the given number is fraudulent and the initial telephone contact was not from Sky.
Steve Whitehouse, Head of Trading Standards for Torfaen council said: "Under no circumstances should you give your bank details out over the phone. If you have any concerns please contact the team on 01633 647624."

They new her address and a few other personal details, they new the first few numbers of her
card number then asked for the rest. She luckily refused and the woman on the phone said she was
new and had to talk to her manager as mum wouldnt give the woman her card details.
My mum then hung up and the company didnt ring back.
luckily they didnt get anything out of my mum but im sure there are many vulnerable people
out there that would.- Caller: Sat Assist

- Bob (Newcastle)| 2 repliesI received a call this afternoon from a lady called Michaela (08452410885).She started by saying that I was currently paying £9 per month for my Sky insurance, which was wrong as I am only paying £6!
She then said that as maintenance men were currently working in the area that she would be able to knock the monthly charge down to £5, and this would be confirmed in a follow up letter. In the meantime she asked for confirmation of my bank details to "speed up" the process. When I suggested that she should already know my bank details she became aggressive and hung up.
I am always suspicious when asked for bank details and never give them out over the telephone, so if anyone else gets a call from this woman then be very cautious!!!- Caller: Sat Assist
- near ipswich replies to Bob (Newcastle)| 1 replyMy farther also had a call today... he was told that he was paying £9... he could be paying £5.75... saving him money on his sky box insurance..... impressed...... has he does not have sky but does have BT Vison...
He was then asked for his bank details with sort code etc and make the saving happen...... of which he declined to give... even thou he was pushed for his account number and sort code...
My farther turned 80 last week.... as you can tell he still has his "marbles".... as well as his money.. by not being conned..... How many others have been conned today... yesterday .... the day before..... Lets just hope NO ONE is conned tomorrow.. - mrs m jackson replies to David| 1 replyi have had £17.25 taken from my account for a insurance i do not want you are not with sky protect as i was led to believe by the person who called me on my telephone i am a pensioner and cannot afford to lose this money i would be grateful if you would refund it to my account i have tried to ring you but the number is unobtainable i hope i get my money back its disgraceful how you are conning all us pensioners if i dont get a reply to this message i will have no alternative but to report it to the police
- Nan replies to mrs m jacksonReporting on this forum will not reach this company. It is simply a forum for reporting unknown, unwanted and scam calls and sharing information. If you have tried any of the telephone numbers on page 1 and not got any response, then you need to contact your Local Trading Standards, or Action Fraud. Your local police will not be able to do anything.
- Mr P replies to helenm27I paid this company £120 for 2 years of cover as it was explained to me that it was much cheaper than what I was currently paying. I thought it was the same company that I was with already, which is Sky Protect. While it is definitely cheaper I didn't want two sets of cover. Upon giving them a call they were quite helpful, they did try and convince me to stay with them but I refused and they gave me a full refund. I don't think they are a scam company but the call I had from them did confuse me.
- Charlielinsey@hotmail.co.uk replies to Mr jCan you sent me his address, the same thing has happened to my grandad and they have taken £120, I'm watching him crying because he thinks he is useless and I'm not happy with the [***] hole that's done this
- abbieT35 replies to near ipswichhi, I also had a call from this company, i took out an insurance and rung back up a few days later as i had a few concerns but they were very helpful and explained what was happening.
They don't ask for account number or sort code so I am confused as to what you are on about.
Also I understand that you are angry and upset but the person calling your father would have not have known his age etc. just because he's 'lost his marbles' does not make this a fraudulent company. - MunkiI've had 3-4 calls from this number in a week, first two I didn't pick up as didn't know who it was.
3rd time answered in error ..."Hello Mrs S we are Sat Assist & we understand that you pay £8.95 for maintenance support for your Sky". Replied that I was not the bill payer and they said ok & put the phone down.
4th time they rang I asked the young English woman if she could explain how the company obtained my number and she hung up without another word. I'm assuming this is so I could not request that they cease to use my personal data!- Caller: Sat Assist
- MarkThey claim to be reducing the cost of sky cover. They then ask what bank you are with and then give you the first 4digits of the account to confirm.....which of course is the first 4 digits of the bank in general and not your account.
Con.- Caller: Sky assist

- Chris GadsbyJust had an unsolicited call from 0845 2410885. Caller askedto speak to Mr or Mrs Gadsby so I asked what she was calling about. The woman sounded British but there was a lot of background noise - children calling out and so on. She said she was calling about our Sky box but when I asked for more information she made a loud sigh and immediately rang off.
I have had similar calls on a number of occasions in the past.- Caller: not given
- lorraine jacksonjust had a call from this number and they said they were calling from sky???? wanted my bank details, sky have my details
- anonThey call and say they are calling about Sky Protect and they can lower the monthly fee, then they just need to verify the bank details. If they have already conned you once in the past they might be able to guess the first 4 digits of your card number as they remain constant when you are with the same bank, and they then get you to "verify" the rest. They are not part of Sky yet they do say they are lowering the price of your Sky protect cover - they arent, they are basically signing you up to another insurance. Please note that they keep hold of your details and will try again, they caught one of us out around 2-3 years ago with this scam and almost managed to do the same again today. They are extremely plausible sounding on the phone but I guess that is the art of being a con artist.
- NoColdCallers| 3 repliesIt's a pity people are still falling for this scam which has been around for a while.
Sky Protect is the official insurance by Domestic and General on behalf of Sky.
No other "insurance" is supported by Sky.
If you have Sky equipment and are not currently covered by Sky Protect from D&G you may get a form through the post giving you the option to get it. I believe you can also buy cover from the MySky section of the Sky website.
They will never ring you and ask for bank/credit card details over the phone.
Anyone who asks for such information is clearly a crook and should be reported as such.
Please tell anyone you think may be vunerable to such calls to beware and never give out personal information.
Don't bother with banter/excuses, with any cold caller if they try to get info from you, hang up immediately.
