I've been getting multiple calls from 318-746-1250 saying that the person is an inmate in a county jail in Louisiana.  I do not know anyone in LA so I have not been answering them.  Is this some kind of scam?
I wish they would stop calling my cell phone!

This number called my cell phone three times back to back to back really quickly. I searched the number on Google and found out it was from a Louisiana Prison in Shreveport. Don't care to talk to anyone in prison, all they want is money so they can try to keep playing the same game in prison.

It appears to be how someone in jail is allowed to make a call for bail or something. It's an expensive approach should you accept. Easier to block the number!

I got a collect call from a prison (I thought they said Union County Detention) - I listened to the recording for about 15 seconds and then hung up. No call-backs yet (it was only an hour ago)

Telecoin is the phone service that is used by prisoners to make collect calls. The call will cost $15 if you accept it from the prisoner (not by just answering it). The area code showing 318 for Louisiana sure NOT mean the call is coming from there. They are a service for multiple jails across the country. (ie: Roane and Rutherford county jails both use this. Prisoners sign up and pay a monthly service to make calls thru them. If you receive this call and do not know anyone in jail (again could be from 36 different states), then block it. You can contact telecoin and ask them to block any calls to you by reaching them atCity Tele Coin, Inc.

The prisoner could have the wrong number or also attempting to solicit money from you by random phone dialing. This is highly unlikely given that the prisoner makes a monthly payment by minutes used for their service. Mine ended up being a person trying to reach the one who has my number before me. I received several collection calls for that same person. The best, easiest and cheapest method since contacting Tele Coin to ask to be blocked will do you no good is to download app on your phone to block calls unless you have built in blocking functions.

Hope this helps. Just wanted to explain its a called from Louisiana, it could be local mail in your city and state.

The phone call itself isn't necessarily a scam. The call could actually be coming from anywhere in the country since this company handles inmate calls for the majority of county jails and many city jails. When the inmate places the call, they can record a short, 5 - 10 second, message to identify themselves to the person they are calling. From what I could find on the companies website, the first 2 minutes are free and the charge varies based on how it's being paid for where the call is from. It is possible that the inmate making the call could just be calling random numbers in an attempt to scam money out of people, but more often than not, either the caller gave them the wrong number, they misdialed or someone you know has really been arrested and is trying to get in touch with you.

The scam you heard about is generally inmates at state facilities calling and claiming to be a child, grandchild or other relative in the hopes that they can get the person to send money to their prison account. Most of these scammers are serving long sentences and have someone on the outside get them phone numbers of people with the same last name. So, while there is a small possibility that the person on the other end is trying to scam you, it's not something they can accomplish just by you answering the phone. However, if you simply ignore the call because you think the number is associated with a scam, you could be missing a legitimate call from someone you know. If you answer the call, you don't even have to talk to the person calling. You can simply listen to the recording and wait to hear where the inmate is calling from and their message. If you don't know the person calling, hang up.

You can call the company and have your number blocked, but if you chose to do that, your number will be blocked from EVERY phone they service permanently. That means if anyone you know every does get in trouble and ends up in a facility that uses this company, they can't get in touch with you.

If you are getting persistent calls, chances are the caller has the wrong number. Inmates don't have free access to phones any time they want (if you get a call in the middle of the night, the caller has likely just been placed under arrest as regular inmates do not have phone access at that time). It's highly unlikely they would waste the little time they have to contact the outside world to troll a random stranger repeatedly. In that case, you can take advantage of the free 2 minutes to let them know you are not the person they are trying to reach. On the off chance the person is trolling you for whatever reason and the calls continue, you can call the facility they are being held in and they will take away the person's phone privileges.
