So, you pro debt collector, "they didn't make a mistake calling the phone number they called" folks; I can only assume you have never ever changed your phone number and never received a call from the former owner of the phone number. These clowns often buy debt that is well past the statutory limits to collect, and buy debt that was resolved in bankruptcy. They also call and harass the folks that inherit numbers of secondary contacts. Or harass family members. Or people they think are family members. They violate the federal "Fair credit reporting act" and "fair debt collecting act" frequently. I have received calls asking for a former consultant to our firm who apparently owes debt half the country away, but the skip tracers ran down his associations and reached our defunct company, found its members and then tracked them down and I ended up getting calls from them. When they dead ended the debt, they sold it as part of a package to a lower tier collector (Merchants) and they call me thinking the guy is associated with the number, accuse me of being the guy, harass me for current contact info, etc. I haven't seen him for over 15 years!!! Changing my number isn't an option as it is known with contacts worldwide, literally. And on printed material, websites, and more, all of which would means either 10's of thousands of lost revenue or thousands in costs to change the number where it is publicly used.
Tell them to contact you by mail only, and they "sell" your debt to another tightly coupled company (same people different name) and the calls continue. The one account above has generated about 30 blocked phone numbers. Just like banking reform, we need sweeping collection reform. I agree people need to pay their debts. But the collection agencies are a broken model, don't obey the law, are often contracted to out of country collection agencies who don't follow or aren't reachable by US law. So reform is needed. Call your legislators and demand that when asked collection agencies must provide their company name, employee identification, and legal representative for service of court papers. No need for operator's name, just a unique identifier so when the company is sued they can be identified and served to be a witness to their own acts once court proceedings begin. Always ask for permission to record the conversation since they are recording it on their end. And ask for a copy of their recording. Make sure you get a phone number to call them back. Often the caller ID is faked or goes to a virtual PBX that says it is the main number and you can't get past that. And the last item, if you sell something, they called you, sell to them. Feel free to call them back since they established the relationship. Sell them until they ask you to stop. Then if they call you again, start all over. I've sold a toaster for about twice what it was worth to a guy from Austin that called me collecting a college loan for someone with the same name that was not me. Did not feel bad in the least about it. (five folks with identical name in my local area, one with the same middle name exactly, one with a variant spelling, the others with the same middle initial and not using their middle name. woo be it if I lived in NYC). They call _anyone_ they think gets them closer to their goal, regardless of the laws against the practices they use.

    The Screamer
Hey, if you are tired of being harassed by these types of calls, have a little fun with it: every time they call you, answer but don't say anything. As soon as they start talking, scream as loud as you can into the phone and hang up on them. Just a good blood curdling scream like you would hear in a horror movie. See how many times they still call after that! đŸ˜±

Dear Mr. or Mrs. Pay Up America, (a.k.a. High and Mighty),
First off, allow me to commend you for hiding behind an alias. Bravo. As you'll notice, I did not. This isn't because I not only have nothing to hide but also because I have the sack put my name behind my word. But being judgemental and hiding behind anonymity is what the jaded and passive aggressive do these days.

The reason I'm posting here is like many others, I receive hounding phone calls from this phone number for debts I do not owe. How can I be sure of that? Because I'm 17 years old, never had a credit card (as yet unable to), my medical is through my parents, my mobile is on a prepay basis, and my 1998 Honda Accord was paid in cash by working my butt off over the last three summers. Just because people are writing about a mistaken identity doesn't give you call to be a judgemental ess ohh bee and accuse them otherwise.

We're all here because of these rudes phone calls—why are you here? I hope you have a more constructive outlet for entertainment than surfing collection agency complaint boards and posting arrogant assumptions anonymously.

I commend you for your opinion, well said . However, you also say that you are 17years old, as the date of the post you are replying to was the 8th Jan 2009,  that would make you roughly 9 -10 when it was written. I think it would be fair to say they ain't still sitting there for your comments, nice try tho.

I have received calls from this company for a debt I DO owe from a medical debt, but I am unemployed. My only funding at the moment is student financial aid. I explained this to them, and they immediately started demanding to know when I would be paying them since I have income. After several rounds of explaining to them that it is for school and it is ILLEGAL for them to ask for this money, and ever increasing demands for it, I hung up and blocked them. They are not a reasonable collection agency and are willing to break laws to get what they want.

    Mr. B.
Merchant’s Credit. I have had dealings with these scum before, calling about other people’s bills and they are not professionals even by collection agency standards, but rather serial FDCPA violators who have been on several state and possibly federal watch lists for some time. So, if you get a call from them, don’t assume you owe the debt, assume your rights are being violated. Report them to the FTC and your state attorney general at once. We did, and not only did we never hear from them again, but one medical provider permanently dropped them.  The more complaints a collection agency gets, the closer they will be investigated, so make them an even bigger target.  This is how the really bad ones are shut down for good.  As for [***] like “Pay Up America” you can pack that Pay-your-bills crap where the sun doesn’t shine.  All companies are judged by the way they do business, and you and your fellow collectors, NOT the people you prey upon have, clearly shown that the entire Accounts Receivable industry is a morally bankrupt snake pit that hires the dregs of society and can not be trusted.  Collectors are only in that line of work because neither the job nor the employee is wanted anywhere else.

I receive daily calls from this number and no longer answer them. They are determined that I am a relative of someone named Juanita Craig (never heard of) and keep threatening to have the FBI get involved. ??? Receiving a daily call with someone shouting at me and making threats has to violate some kind of law somewhere I assume? If I were an actual relative of this person I guess I could understand.
