The university educated employee attempted to justify what they do. Nice try. Later, the public was told to 'Man Up', answer the phone, and be nice.  Well that doesn't work either.

My daughter had a most difficult time finding a job in her field when she moved to southern Ontario.  So, she took a job in a call center, and this company owned several call centres and performed polls as well.  She endured several company mandated transfers until she could do better.  Here is what she has to say about the professionalism of those employed at call centres:
    1. If you are rude then they will put you through hell.  They will tell their IT friend during lunch about you and he will call other IT friends and before long you will be inundated with calls from a wide variety of call centres, regardless of their business purpose, and each of them will hang up or leave long messages of silence on your answering service.
    2. If they don't have an IT friend they may be working for a Team Leader that tells them that he wants the number of everyone who has been rude, or slightly rude, or who hangs up out of sheer frustration. At the next Team Meeting the Team Leader will tell everyone under his management that his/her special list of phone numbers has to be taught a lesson, so everyone working under him/her will now start harassing you.  If there are other Team Managers of the same ilk, then they too will share these special lists and you will get even more harassing phone calls.  If any of these Team Leaders has an IT friend, then your peaceful life will be turned to utter toast.
    3. If you follow the wonderful instructions to ask to talk to their supervisor, meaning their Team Leader, you are automatically put on a very serious hit list.  These guys/gals do not want to be bothered by the public and believe that they have enough to deal with during the day other than your request to be removed from their Call List; you are toast again because of their hatred for their job and their employer.
    4. If you are on the Canadian Do Not Call List, you will be called anyway.  This entire affair is not managed properly and these kind civil service employees will not list their numbers so that you can contact them. No. You have to go online to fill out forms that include your name and phone number.  These lists are then given to all call centers (there are exceptions) in an electronic format. Once you do that, your name and number will be electronically, by the Canadian Call Centres to every overseas call centre and all those in the USA. Out of spite, these call centres will make your life miserable.
    5. Why? The conditions in a call centre are horrific and my daughter says that even nice, decent people will become infected by the caustic work environment and turn into ugly people within a matter of several weeks. One of the few ways they can deal with this, since no internal employee complaint process is truly designed to solve their complaints, is to get some kind of morbid satisfaction out of harassing you; nearly 95% of the complaints are with regard to the horrific treatment they receive at the hands of the Team Leaders. In the end, the only way they can find satisfaction is by phoning you 30 times a day, hanging up on you 30 times a day, leaving 30 minutes of music or silence on your call answer service or participating in a process that results in the same.
    6. If you have ever had trouble with one of these call centres while they were employed at a restaurant with you, or went to university or college with you, or was a problem child in the neighbourhood both of you grew up in, or ever lodged a complaint against them when they were working as a waiter/waitress in a restaurant you ate at, and the list goes on and on. My daughter said that a lot of the call centre employees have retained the numbers of such people. And rather than the odd annoying call-and-hang-up calls from them, you will now be beseiged by an unrelenting attack of harassing phone calls. Nice, eh.
    7. Now, let the university educated student and call centre employee deny this. He or she will. But, my daughter says that if you don't get out now, then you will be 'totally screwed up' for a very long time or possibly the rest of your life. Is your temporary part/full time job worth it? We hope that you see what's happening to you and that you quit and find a respectful job in your field. We are wishing you the best, as are probably others.

    Cheers,

PS The only way to stop this harassment is for someone to produce and sell to the public an AutoDialer like the Call Centres use. When you get an annoying call then you can AutoDial the living daylights out of all of their business, and associated business, numbers. This will be the only way to get them to take your Do Not Call Request seriously and abide by your very simple request.

Got a call from this number at about 10 pm central time.  We didn't answer - the call went to machine.  The voice (male) said "hello?" a few times, then hung up.  I could hear background noise, like a crowd of people talking ... telemarketing office?

What happpened to the "Do not call" list?  I think we have been getting more crap calls since adding our number to it.

@nickel: The DO NOT CALL LIST is for telemarketers, not MARKET RESEARCHERS. The people who call you from 514-288-0420 are MARKET RESEARCHERS. There is no DO NOT CALL LIST for MARKET RESEARCHERS. They are allowed to call anyone in Canada from 9AM to 9PM. It is not a telemarketing office. It is a Market Research call center in downtown Montreal. The next time they call you, tell them to REMOVE YOUR NUMBER FROM THE LIST and DO NOT CALL AGAIN.

@LB: Market Research firms are allowed to call anyone from 9AM to 9PM. This company calls fortune 500 companies/doctors/laywers etc.. They only leave messages for business calling. Some businesses, depending on the study, have the opportunity to call back at a 1-800 number to do the survey. They do not leave messages for households.

    Irked and Unspecified call recipient
I was called this number late saturday morning, which is fine since people are expected to be up by then.

However, the woman on the other line just asked to speak with one of my parents, and did not outline why. Which lead me to believe it was a fraudulent telemarketer, or some sort of scammer.  Those calls kind of piss me off, just because of the sheer number I get, so I just said "no one is home" and the call lasted about 5 seconds

Since now I know this was a survey, I'll give an opinion. Please, people of 1-514-288-0420, tell my why you're calling before the conversation starts. Then I don't think you are going to scam me, and I won't be unjustifiably pissed off at you.

If you get calls from this number in the day, on a weekday; then it has something to do with business. They only make business calls from 9 to 5.

Most likely its a customer satisfaction survey for a bank or telecommunication service. You mentioned you got a new phone, maybe it is for that, to see if you are satisfied.

Call 1-800-288-0199 to request to be removed, eh?  All this results in is the recorded, "1-800-288-0199 can't be reached from (my) calling area (BC)."

    Thanks for telling me
    (1) to grow some balls and
    (2) that I bathe in my own ignorant bliss
and then go on to explain that you have a right to use an impersonal auto-dialer to call me at a personal number without me having explicitly offered you that number.
I also did telephone solicting in order to get through post-secondary. I took the training, did the job for 20 minutes and then quit after I realised what I was doing to people.
If I want politicians to know my opinion, I vote. If I want companies to know my preferences, I buy. I don't spend 15 minutes of my own time telling a polling company so that I can be 1/10000th of an opinion, plus or minus one point 19 times out of 20.

Quit your job and get rid of that obnoxious, self-righteous personality that your job has forced you to grow.

I am on the no call list, first of all.  Secondly, aren't they supposed to not make these calls after 9:00 pm?  They called my house at around 9:45 pm.
