Instead of ignoring the calls, pick them up!  And then proceed to waste as much of the caller's time as possible (while being careful not reveal any useful information).  If everyone does this, the telemarketers' losses on their non-revenue producing calls may exceed their gains from the few calls that do produce revenue.  If the caller is an automated phone system that leaves a voicemail message, then post the callback number here.

This quote is from an article about a scammer (specifically, an illegal product diverter) who caused some corporations millions of dollars of losses.

It's clear why they keep calling - scamming people can be lucrative.

Keep getting calls on my cell from this number, just today 11-9-09, just got a call on my work number. This is strange. How did they get my work number?
Some how it seems they have access to files that link together. This is not good!

I have been receiving these calls now on my cell phone long message when you answer, so i haven't answered anymore, i called the number back and the operator said the number was not corrected prank call i guess

I told the caller that "you have to answer all of my questions before I answer any of yours" and then proceeded to ask many questions (I later told him that I have an unlimited number of questions).  Here's what I found out:

The caller is working in a call center in New Delhi, India.  His salary is 16,000 rupees per month.  (He asked me why I wanted to know his salary.  I told him that I am interested in international economics.)  He expressed concern that he might receive a "cap letter" meaning that his company might take action against him, if I do not answer his question.

I asked him about his call log.  He said that at least twice before someone said this was a wrong number and that they had left 10 messages.  I asked "do you just keep talking until the other person hangs up or the person answers your question?"  He admitted that he can't hang up from his end.  This explains why the previous caller told me, "you can hang up now" instead of just hanging up on me (see the first post by Anon on 9 Nov 2009).

He said "I am not here for fun and games."  I told him, "well, I am."

I keep getting these dumb calls asking me if AJ Moore is there and when i said who is this, the arab said he was Brandon something and he asked me my name and i told him nun of your [***] business and they hung up. They call me atleast twice a day.

Caller ID showed 555-555-5555 and an automated message said the message was from Verizon and that I need to call back. When I call back, an automated message says that the number is no longer in service and I need to call 888-888-8888. When I call that number, I get caught in a loop with a message repeating over and over: "A representatives are busy right now. Please hold until the next available representative." If I hold long enough, the line eventually goes dead.

Did not pick it up but it was 555-555-5555. What a bunch of dumbasses thats the thing since a three dollar bill.

Today I got a call from 555-555-5555 the caller id didn't get the information from who it was. Is  there any way to block unwanted phone calls?

Some indian woman called from this obviously bogus number saying that I had won a free holiday to Dubai for 4 people lasting three weeks. I asked what the catch was, and she said there wasn't one. I knew there was so I played dumb and continued with the call. I gave her a false name, false address etc. and then it came to the point where she wanted my card number for a "security deposit". I told her that she said there was no catch. She tried to be as convincing as possible but I just told her that I would be reporting her to the police and hung up.

Too many frail, old people fall for scams like this so it's about time somebody did something about it. Robbing [***].

WELL A MAN CALLED MY SISTER AND I HE TOLD US THAT HE HAD OUR FATHER AND AT THE TIME OUR DAD WAS AT THE STORE HE SAID HE WOULD KILL US AND OUR FAMILY FROM THAT DAY ON I WAS SCARED OUT OF MY MIND AND STILL AM!!!!!!!!!

Number was 555-555-5555 so I answered it because it looked really odd. When I answered it sounded like a black guy but I couldnt understand what he said so I hung up and added it to my reject list. Weird.

been getting calls from this number serval times a week,each time asking how i liked my dsl connection.

one i don't have a dsl connection at my home. and two i'm on the do not call list.they hang up.

keep getting calls from 555-555-5555. Most times when I answer there is no
response. Today ask for someone who does not live here. Say they are some collection Agency?

In Ontario 555-555-5555 turned out to be 800-763-3328 this time and they are F.D.R. Credit Recovery Limited.

555-555-5555 recorded message looking for someone other than me. Said to call Chelsea at Enhanced Recovery Corporation and left phone number 800-501 7759. I recorded the call. Everyone send a million recorded messages to this phone number and break their connection. Maybe they will learn that its illegal to make robot calls to collect money. I think I will sue them.
