called twice, but I did not answer.  Caller ID shows IRS - but it is a scam.  Called the "real" IRS and they said they do not call but rather send mail.  Also called Attorney General's Office who said they have had many calls about this.  Do not answer phone if ID shows IRS - it is a scam and report it to the "real" IRS and Attorney General.

You may not want to assume this is a scam. I got a call but instead of calling the number they left on the voicemail I called the main number for the IRS (1-800-829-1040) and went through their system to talk to a person. They do ask for ALOT of personal information but IT WAS THE IRS, they knew all my prior years transactions. They did want to talk to me and ignoring the call would have been costly for me. So call the main number at the IRS and see if they wanted to talk to you.

Just recieved a call on my cell from this number, requesting me to call befoer end of business today, but the message didn't start recording until the automated system started with a case number so I would have no way to know where to return the call - not that I'm inclined.  Looked up the number and see that I'm not the only one!  The IRS doesn't have my cell number anyway.

just called the IRS at 800-829-1040 and they also confirmed that this is a true IRS call back numbr and number calling. it is a collection agency. but i have no amounts due to the IRS. called them and someone else's gave my number instead of their own as a means of contact.

Continually getting this number. Have answered it and gotten automated 800# and case number which has varies. I have dealt with the IRS. They send me notices when we need to do business. They do not call.

I called the IRS directly, they said it was a scam.  They don't send out automated messages.

This is a scam. A couple of the messages on this site claim that it is not, but they are the word for word same copy/pasted messages that are posted to ao couple of other phone number scam reporting sites.  So, not only is this a scam, but the scammers are posting fake messages on this and other message boards trying to scare people into calling the number anyway.

The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by phone, email or social media to notify them of an audit, refund or balance due.

They don't even repeat the number twice for you to call them back...kinda fishy.

these people keep calling me EVERY day now for 3 weeks ! they say that i need to call a 800 number by the end of business day ! the IRS does NOT call you they will send a letter. !!!!!!! so how can i stop them from calling my cell phone? they are burning up my minutes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

they called my daughter today - she was smart enough to not give them her information the first thing they wanted was her social security number - why has no one stopped them?

This is a valid number and request; the 800-829-3903 is valid.  Still, proceed with caution in such a situation. You can always call the 800-829-1040 or 0922 (wage earners) or 8374 (small business owners) lines.

I've received many calls from this number over the past month, and once tried to call the 800 number left in the voicemail and was immediately prompted to key in my social security number.

(716) 206-3218 telephone number showed on the caller ID of the company celphone but the recorded message said it was the IRS and that the call needed to be returned by the end of the day and to reference case #6731997518.

The phone number (716)206-3218 has been calling me a few times a day for months. I even changed my phone number & before I gave my number out to anyone they called AGAIN on my new phone number!! They would call & it would be a recorded message saying it was the IRS asking me to call them back at 1(800) 829-7650 with case number 9155944144. I would call back & get a recorded voice saying it was the IRS asking for my SS # or operator extension. I would put in the case number 3 times then just keep hitting zero after being on hold for a few mins I got a hold of a gentleman who gave his last name & an ID # asking for my SS # when I asked who he was and where he was from he started to get flustered & threatened to call the police due to my "tax fraud". I then hung up.

I call the REAL IRS who told me it sounded like a scam & that while the IRS can contact you by phone they will always confirm their name, ID, & specific department. He did ask for my SS # so he could leave notes on my account but I told him in light of what was happening I didn't feel comfortable giving that to him. He said that was fine & placed me on hold while he gave me the # for the U.S Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration or TIGTA.

I decided to call the 1(800) 829-7650 number back while I was waiting for an answer from TIGTA. I was on hold w/the scam number for long enough for me to file a report w/TIGTA. When I finally answered I decided to record everything. She gave her last name & ID. I then told her I had gotten like 4 calls a day from this number & I wanted to know what it was regaurding & gave her the 9155944144 case number. She looked it up & asked me if my name was Shane (which it isn't. I know from text messages that Shane was the previous owner of my new phone number) I told her I didn't know anyone by that name & she asked for my phone number so she could take it off the list. I told her since she already had it if she could just take it off. She then read my phone number out to me & told me I should stop getting calls. I said thank you & asked for her name & department again. She told me her last name & said she was with the IRS. I said Okay, what department? She said IRS. I asked what department in the IRS & she said "It doesn't matter since you aren't the person we are calling for". I asked again for the department so I would know who to contact if I keep getting calls. Again she said IRS (at this point she was getting really annoyed & upset at me). I said okay I just want to know the department because I am recording the conversation & need to know what "department" I am reporting to the real IRS. She then hung up the phone.

I am trying to call back again & will give my old phone number that they had been calling prior to this one. I'll record it & see what they have to say.
