There are many forms of identity theft. One of the best ways to control identity theft when the thief tries to open accounts in your name... Is to FREEZE your credit with the three credit agencies. It costs $10 to FREEZE your credit with each agency but it's the best way. The pain point (BUT WORTH IT) is when you want to purchase a car for instance. After you choose your vehicle and you're in the room with the financial guy at the dealership you'd simply ask which of the big three agencies they use to run the credit check.
Once you now that you can quickly have your credit UNfrozen for 24 hours or days so that the dealership can check your credit score. It will then be REfrozen after the time rule you put in. And it does cost $10 to unfreeze and then freeze will just happen automatically (no cost).
I have a job where my social security number is what is used to get into most facilities. This was the best way for me to protect myself. I've been doing this for about 5 years.
The credit agencies do not like this and it was hard at first to put a freeze but things have become much easier as time has gone on. One of the big three still makes it hard but you can still do it, the other two "get it" and are really good to make it easier.

- Charles JWow, 14 pages of comments in 13 months. These people at Mortgage Protection Services must be very busy--think of the number of pink or yellow (my color) cards that did not generate a visit to this site or any other site and whose recipients responded to the "IMPORTANT NOTICE: IMMEDIATE RESPONSE NEEDED." BTW--my mortgage hasn't yet closed, although other bank information was accurate: A tell-tale error, but I wish it were true.
