I actually didn't get a call, I received an email about fradulant activity on my checkcard and how I needed to click on some link to complete the confirmation process however, I don't bank with Bank of America. It had the same number to call them back. I emailed them and told them I didn't have an account with Bank of America so why were they emailing me. Guess what, the email bounced back saying this is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification. Delivery to the following recipients failed. onlinebanking@alerts.bankofamerica.com

This is a legitimate call from Bank of America's fraud alert line.  My daughter's BOA debit card was stolen yesterday and BOA called the house as soon as the thieves attempted to use the card. My daughter wasn't even aware that the card had been stolen from her, so call alerted her to the fact that this card and three other credit cards had also been lifted from her wallet.  We are very grateful for BOA's service in this regard.

I find it hard to believe that this is a legit number. But then again I'm a bit frazzled at the moment. I woke up at 7:15 this morning and find my husband not home. When I checked the phone the last number he called out to was this 1-800 number at 6:51 am. They had called at 3 am this morning. So It doesn't make since to me why a bank warning would be calling at 3 in the morning.

Excerpted from an E-MAIL that I received today:

    >
Your Taxpayer Identification Number certification is required to avoid federal backup withholding.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires Bank of America to have a completed Form W-9 Request for Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) and Certification on file to certify your U.S. taxpayer information on your account(s). As an individual taxpayer, your TIN is your Social Security Number (SSN) or your Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).

Until we receive valid certification, your reporting status and your account may be subject to U.S. tax reporting and federal backup withholding at a rate of 28% on interest paid to your account. If interest is withheld, you must file a tax return with the IRS to claim a refund.

Completing this certification is easy and secure - just follow the steps on the right.

We appreciate your attention to this matter. Should you need assistance in completing this form, please call 1-800-432-1000 to speak with one of our associates. Thank you for banking with Bank of America.

800-432-1000 appears on the back of my debit card.  I called and spoke with a Jim Draper who explained this request for a W-9 is part of a program initiated by the IRS on 3/9/2009 and he referred me to 866-327-0702. That's an automated system that asked me to input my SS#.  I hung up, am still dragging my heels....

I Googled 866-327-0702 and it appears on pages written in Russian. I may be calling the A.G.'s office shortly! Still searching for info...

The person ("Jim Draper") with whom I spoke when I called 800-432-1000 instructed me to call 866-327-0702 and provide my SS#.  Is that 866 telephone number in any way associated with Bank of America?  It is found online only on pages written in RUSSIAN.

I am not convinced that the original e-mail is legitimate, and this is not an elaborate phishing ruse.  I am unable to locate any "secured certification page" when I sign in at https://www.bankofamerica.com/.  I will take a W-9 to Customer Service at my local BOA branch tomorrow.

I have been getting automated calls for extended auto warranties at work and home and I keep selecting option#2 for removing my name from their calling list for months and finally I keep selecting option #1 to speak with the rep and as soon as I ask for supv or any company info they either give false info or hangup so I now I log into DA website and report the ph# on my display (which is spoofed) and the day and time of the call and the date I added my ph# to the DoNotCall list.

On my caller ID read 800-432-1000 and this is Bank of America phone number but the message was to return the call to 888-219-6262.  I called the number after hours to listen to the recording that states they are Card Services.  I do not have a credit card with Bank of America.  I believe FIA Card services a bill collector on a credit card I cannot afford to pay due to the economy is trying all kind of tactics to get through to me.  It has been stated on the news, do not return bill collectors calls, save $1000 for yourself and then try to pay them back and if you receive bills in the mail throw them away.  People are depressed and killing themselves for bills that cannot be paid. I will not talk to a bill collector unless I have money to pay them something. I am so grateful for this site and the information is on it.

I just received this contact number through an email, and have checked with BoA and they said it IS NOT from them.

Everyone needs to realize that just because this is the number that BOA has listed on their website, DOES NOT MEAN that the caller id is truthful.  I myself have a program for the iPhone that lets me change my caller id to whatever number I choose.  It's meant as a novelty or for pranks, but can obviously be used for fruad.

Tell them thanks for the call and that you will call them back, that way you know you are actually connecting to the legit BoA phone number.

I got the letter from Bank of America saying my Email address was changed and if I weren't responsible to call them at 1 800-432-1000.  I called and asked for details but they didn't want to talk about anything other than me signing up for their Privacy Assist Program for $12.95 a month. This was supposedly to protect me from being scammed.  Could this be their way of scaring you into buying protection???

    frustrated with fraud
my mother was called by someone, she does not have caller ID, who claimed to be from a fraud prevention dept under Medway Solutions. She hung up. He called back saying he was legitimate and sweet talked her into giving him her bank number. He gave her a phone number, 1 800 432-1000. SHe called me to tell me what happened and I called the bank and froze her acct immediately. The bank said they DO NOT call their customers with this sort of service. It felt like a fraudulent call to me and it sickens me that these  people prey on others. Just be aware. Just say NO to calls of this nature, any call that asks for money. I googled the phone number and found this post. Then I googled Medway Solutions and found nothing that matched what they claimed to offer.

Be careful - the number is a legit Bank of America number, but the caller may be a scammer trying to get you to pick up the phone. On 11/12/09 I received a recorded message asking to confirm a change of address to my B of A account, leaving 1 800 432 1000 as the number to call back. I had not submitted any change of address request and promptly called B of A to ask what was up. The customer rep told me their records showed they had not made the call or left the message. He told me there are scammers who call people, claim to be from B of A, and then try to get account number information, PINs, etc., on the pretext of 'confirming' the information. Maybe the scammers' thinking is that if they leave a legit number in a message, the next time they call the target will talk to them. The bottom line is, don't give any of this information over the phone unless it's in a call you dialled yourself.

Some scam operations use other, well-known, entities as covers for their operation.  by using a bank of america number, they create a sense of legitimacy, when in fact they are just scamming by covering their true identity with another number.

I also recieved a call from 800 432 1000. Concerned I called my local bank to check if the number is documented with the Bank of America directory, and it is. So no worries.

This is a legit number.  I called BoA directly and they gave me this number to call them back.  Also, if you look it up on bankofamerica.com, it is listed as the phone number for their NY branches.

If your credit/debit card is stolen/lost and you do not have your card number, they ask for your social security number as it is the only way they can look up your account (BoA's words, not mine).

Same went for AmEx so this must be a normal practice for credit card companies to look up your account.
