Received  voicemail yesterday.  Caller ID says "Census Bureau".   They told me to call them back at this toll-free number.  I did not, and will not call them back.

Received a call from 812-218-3144.  Caller identified himself as being from the United States Census Bureau but left no number to call him back at.  I called the number the caller ID showed on my phone and I got a recording.  Can't get an answer after several attempts.  I received a "Census" questionaire which states that it must be returned.  I haven't returned it because I have NO IDEA who actually sent it.

I received three calls from these clowns.  One on the weekend and I questioned this she replied that they were always open.  She first asked me to verify personal information.  I replied no and informed her that I would not verify anything.  She asked if I had received their packet in the mail  I said I received a packet in the mail that had something to do with consumer information.  she asked what I did with it and I told her I threw it out with the rest of the junk mail.  She said "ohh no" and informed me that it was manditory.  To this I replied that my rights to my papers were protected by the constitution.  she said that they would send someone out.  I said by all means. and suggested that she have a great day and to remove this number from their calling list.

Someone called and left a reference number to call them back. I called the number 1 812-218-3144 ( Census Bureau) no reply, just a voice mail.I don't plan to call back. If it's important like they said it is they will. The area code is from Illinois.

They started calling me Thurs. 10/30/08. They called six times, leaving a message once. They said they were the census bureau call center, gave a number to call them back with a case number. No calls until the following Thursday 11/06 when they called six more times.  Now it's Thursday 11/13 and the first call was at 9:29am. I expect 5 more calls today. I doubt it's the census because I had the real census come to my house with an ID during this past year. I was "censused" or whatever the term is for several months, they don't just call you on the phone like these scammers. I set the number as no ringtone so it goes straight to voice mail.

Called me 7 or 8 times today so I finally answered after looking up the number online as well as the ACTUAL census bureau info and I asked who she was. She stated nothing except that they were a legitimate census bureau calling center to which I replied that the nearest office to the location she was claiming(somewhere in Indiana) was in fact Chicago. I refused to answer her questions over the phone stating that I have always used the mail for this. She noted my refusal and threatened me with a "title 13 letter". Good luck kids!

Got called on a Saturday, saying it was the Census Bureau with a National Science Foundation Survey. They asked if I had received something in the mail a few months ago, I said I didn't think so. They said it was a short questionnaire, and started with a long preamble about who they were and why they were calling. I believe I filled out a similar web-based one about my job description and whatnot for NSF several years ago, and this caller already had information such as where I worked and when I started, where I got my degree, etc. However, at the end they asked me to confirm a home phone number and address, and they listed a phone number and address I had never heard of, and I did not give them correct ones. That was the only suspicious part of the call that made it look they were fishing for info.

I got a phone call just recently (Feb 8th '09, Sunday around 12:45 believe it or not) from a 520-798-4152.  I didn't answer it and let my machine get it (since I don't answer any numbers I don't know) and it was a man telling me to call the U.S. Census Bureau regarding a survey from the National Science Foundation.  I saved the message thinking it was important possibly.  I ended up getting a similar call from this number today actually.  I got it at 3:00pm, one around 4:15pm, and one at 8:09pm (which they decided to finally leave a message at that point).  The message was a woman, and so obviously fake (she was laughing as she was leaving the message).  I checked this one against the one I got on Sunday and they both matched in information, so I figured the first call was a fake as well (although the man sounded more professional than the woman did).

I'm getting the same bs calls from these people that you guys are.  It seems that they're calling me more than most of you.  I've been getting calls just about every day for 2-3 weeks now.  They have a case number and all that crap.  After briefly reading these posts I didn't see that anyone knows who it really is.  Do any of you know who it actually is?  What they're selling, trying to collect on or whatever?  Maybe it's time to report it to the FTC...

I got 5 calls today most of which came while I was gone to class, but when I got home My lil girl handed Me the phone & quietly said "Daddy these people have been calling all day asking for you"

I noticed that the guy on the phone had a very strong accent which I believed to be a cross between Asian & Indian(Hindu).
He called Me by My surname, which I felt strange about, since no one I know calls Me by My last nane.

Well I thought it was important so I listened.
He told Me that He was calling in regards to the microsoft operating system & thats when I said what do You mean? He stated that this was a follow up call regarding support given on My operating system (I thought to Myself I don't own any microsoft products) So I asked him what Microsoft product he was refering to?
He said Your operating system,I said what operating system & He said the one on Your computer. I told him I don't have a computer & at that point He asks You didn't buy a computer with microsoft windows on it & I said no I didn't at which point he said oh there must be a mistake & we hung up.

I sat there on the porch with My lil girl talking about the missed calls I'd gotten while away, she told Me they said they were with the U.S.Census Bureau.
I thought to Myself surely she must have spoken with a totaly different caller, because this caller I spoke with had an accent that was way too thick to be a representative of the US Census Bureau (it just didn't wash).

Fast forward 2 hours & I get another call, this time it's a woman & she's definitely Asian. She said something I could hardly understand,so I ask her to repeat herself.
Thats when I realize that she could barely pronounce the words.
She was trying to tell Me that she was calling from the United States Census Bureau & something about the word "MANDITORY"

I couldn't beleive My ears when I heard her say the word manditory, so I said what ? She said she was calling from the Census Bureau & that it was a manditory call like I had to talk to her or else. At that point it was all I could do to keep from laughing & asked her did you say manditory? She said yes & thats when I said no thanks & good luck & I hung up!

Thats when I went to Google & entered Key Words "Phone Scam United States Census manditory" & found this webpage as the first hit.
Now I don't have caller ID nor do I know if who I talked to is the same company as the one this thread is referring too but the fact that it was a phone call from a stranger who used the words manditory + United States Census Bureau are too coincidental for me not add it here.

To Me it looks as though the scam has morphed in the fact that Microsoft Windows is used as a commonality or access point, not to forget the obvious foreigners who are conducting the scam.

There's a tool used in the Banking & Real-estate field called a "Farming Sheet".
It's a list with up to a thousand names on it & each name comes with phone number, amount owed on property, address along with other info & because this info is dynamic the lists are updated each year.

I personally think these calls are originating from outside the States(stealthed)
I believe Farming-Sheets are being used "which begs the question:
Can an entity outside of the American Banking & Real-Estate Industries(& all that implies) have & use these Farming-Sheets(is it legal) ?
As well as the question where did they get the Farming-Sheets ?

Look when I first heard about these Farming-Sheets used by the banking & real-estate industry I could hardly beleive it could be legal, but the truth is any real-estate broker can find out all of thee above mentioned info with nothing more than an address & from there they can get Your SS# and DOB & so on, so don't be suprized by it, because it's factual. I might not like it & it might not seem legal but it's done.

But when foreners are privey to My sensitive info.
How did they get it? I think they bought it just as bankers & real-estate Brokers do.
Or maybe the tech's who have been outsourced have their own type of farming sheets after all when we buy a PC it comes with years of Tech support & we don't think twice about giving these guys most of our sensitive data.
It doesn't take much to imagine the data being put into a data base & compiled into Indian Farming-Sheets & then sold to the highest bidders, hell they would have alot of peoples data.
The part that was most telling was the fact that the woman who called couldn't pronounce the words "United States Census Bureau" & before I even began to think it was a scam she told Me the call/interview was manditory almost like she was anticipating Me telling her No.

I know others will say it's all paranoia but the truth is census taking is a delecate task & it requires a hands on face to face approach & by someone who'll elicit trust.
Which is why Uncle Sam has always used young college students door to door.
This new outsourced tela-marketing approach even if it's legitimate will not work especially when the caller is rude & evokes mis-trust.
Heck they'd be better of moving towards a TV comercial asking us to visit such & such website & take the census online rather than to try it over the phone.
The truth is if I can come up with this theory in like 10 seconds I'm sure the great thinkers in Washington can do a lot better as well as to have anticipated the fact that the Tela-marketing approach would fail.

So there You have it My detailed run in with the United States Census Scam & hopefully it will aid in the capture of these crooks.

census is a survey company. Here in my area they go door to door asking how many people live in a single home, etc. Its done once every 10 years. its household related questions. I think they need to update the population number info per city/state/country every so often and thats how they do it. A friend of mine worked for them. Theyre probably do it over the phone in certain areas. Nothing to worry about,
