The call and call and call and call.  I no answer, no answer, no answer and no answer.  Three people live at my address.  Me, Wilma and my sweet little Pebbley poo.  Barney and Betty live next door.  That's all I know about that.

812 is the area code for Southern Indiana, where there is a Census Bureau HQ in Evansville, Indiana and there are additional branches elsewhere. I would still be weary, but just some info from a SoIN resident. Don't give any personal info like SS number or account numbers, but at least hear them out. They have jobs just like the rest of us, lets not be cussing someone out if it isn't deserved.

The Gestapo, I mean the Census Bureau just called wanting to know too much MANDATORY personal information.  I declined to answer.  It's my right to say 'no' to whomever I wish over the phone.  You want answers out of me?  Try sending a registered letter.  Then we'll see.

This is a legitimate phone call from the US Census Bureau.  You can check by calling one of their other numbers listed on their web page or in the packet they sent you for the American consumer Survey.  Most likely a follow up call to ensure that you mailed your packet back.

The call is from the Jefferson Indiana Census Bureau call center.  It probably is regarding the American Community Survey which is done on a continuing basis.  Random addresses are selected from the prior decenniel census.  First the American Community Survey form is mailed to the random addresses.  The next month, if a phone # from the 2000 census is available, the phone center calls to see if that address still matches the phone number.  If it doesn't, it may seem like a call "out of the blue"  but if it does match, the household should have already received the form and information in the mail.  If they prefer not complete it over the phone, they may be contacted in person the following month..  Not everyone who declines is contacted in person due to the extra expense incurred.  The phone center employees are not monitored on every call and you may get a "Bad Apple"  they will get caught and will be fired.

This is a scam. IDENTITY THEFT. be advised.

THIS IS NOT A SCAM AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IDENTITY THEFT.  If they are calling from this number - it is about your census maybe, but more likely about the randomly sent American Community Survey, which is covered by some law they passed to 'expand' the information on the 10-year census.  They have been doing this since 1995.

Having said it is NOT A SCAM, that does not mean I think the public should answer and/or respond to the 48 questions that range far wider than a census, are VERY invasive, and mostly contain very personal information that the government either doesn't need or could pull from another source (court house, tax rolls, IRS, etc).  However, be aware, there is a $5,000 fine for refusal to return this mandatory (by law) survey.  However, I have never met, heard of, or read about anyone who has been fined (used to be only $100) since the inception of the survey.

Just think we need to not proliferate untruths about identity theft, etc. and some people might be afraid of a possible large fine and we would not want to mislead them causing them to fail to respond if they knew about the law.

Be aware also, they don't always call from the same number.  And - 30 days after they send out the survey, if you don't reply, they send another one, no reply to that one garners you 30 days of telephone calls, followed by 30 days of being visited personally at your home by first a census worker and then if they get no answers, a SUPERVISOR from the census bureau.  After that 30 days they will be knocking on the doors of your neighbors and asking them invasive questions about your personal information.  Most people's neighbors today don't really know the kind of information that is being asked on this very personal and detailed survey, and some people just don't know the truth.

Just so you know the 'real' story about this particular number at least and about the American Community Survey distributed and followed by the US Census Bureau.

Here is a link to a PDF file where you can read the questions if you were not a personal who received the survey:

I have filled out and mailed back my survey (Immediately mind you).  And I am now receiving the most annoying calls daily sometimes more then once a day.  They want me to answer questions.... They were kind enough to inform me that it would ONLY take 15 minutes. How can I get them to leave me ALONE?????

This number called my CELL Phone and wanted to ask me about a Census Review of some kind. I asked if she was a US Governement employee, "Yes". I asked if this was the 2010 Census, "No, this is additional information and will take approximately 10 minutes." Which is (in case you have not had the fortune of talking with the actual 2010 US Census) exactly what they ask for. I asked if this was voluntary, "Yes." I said "I have no more information for you." The call ended. I do NOT know if this person REALLY was with the US Census Bureau, but I have already answeded the ONE question they can ask per the US Constitution.

When they call,  ask them who they are trying to reach.
They will say: <insert your name here>
You respond: I think you have the wrong number.
They will ask: is this <insert your phone number>?
    You respond: No
They will ask: what number have I reached?
You respond: what number did you dial?
They will ask: Is this <insert your address>
You respond with astonishment: : <insert your state!!!!> "In America?  NO,"  then chuckle
I could go on , but I think you get the idea.

Hon, you do know that Census is not a company, but an action that your government takes every 10 years to make sure they have as accurate a count of their population, as possible?
It's kind of scary that you're filling out questionnaires without even understanding who is sending them.

I have continued to be "harassed" by the American Community Survey people claiming that they are with the census bureau and by not answering their questions, I am breaking the law.  What can I do to stop this?  First of all, I don't believe this.  Second of all we don't receive mail at our home.  When I told them to mail me a survey to the POBox they claimed they couldn't do this.  Then one person who I spoke with said she could send a 'refusal' letter to the POB which I have yet to receive.

When you check with the Census Bureau their 'code' or reference number is 6 digits long and these people have a 5 digit reference #.  This is harassment at the highest level.  4-6 times a day.  Most of the time I don't answer the calls but when I do, they get an earful but they don't stop.  HELP!

GREAT!  Where do I sign up.  This is getting ridiculous.  They ask for information and when you send it back... does it really matter?  After all, they send another two forms and call sometimes twice a day.  I've received calls as early as 7:00 a.m. on a Saturday and as late as 8:55 p.m. at night.

It's harassment if you ask me.. are there more of us out there that's not happy?  Pathetic.  The government can get away with it... if it's not the wayward taxes these days, it's the CENSUS.  I say go look for the first form I sent and leave me the hell alone already!
