Yes, Please answer all the questions cause that's the only way they'll know where you are during the day, and what time you (and everyone else in the house) is generally away from the house!  Oh, and what nationality you are, exactly how much money you made last year, exactly what your mortgage and utility payments are, and one of the most important questions, how many toilets does your house have?    Evidently they didn't get a chance to add the questions "Do you own a gun? How many? Where is it located at the residence? How much ammo do you have?  That will be for the next 'Survey' I guess.

Got call on 3/26 at 7 PM from 8122183144 with ID - "Census Bureau". Started questioning me and referenced my old address from 10 years ago and he asked me if my tele. number was a number that was a couple of digits off from what he actually called. I promptly challenged back stating that if you can't get your facts straight don't bother me. He quickly hung up. Obvious not a legit call.

it is one of 3 numbers listed for them that calls come from. i'm still not giving info out over the phone or using my time when i get off work to call them back. they can leave all the voice mails they want .

i have gotten numerous calls from this number (as well as several other numbers stating census bureau) during the day, at night after 8pm, and on weekends - sometimes they leave a message and other times not. they even called my business number which is run out of my home,but not a home phone #. WTF?! This 812 # is not listed on any census b. website, which should be mandatory if they want others to think its legit.  even so, dont understand how they can continuously call at any time as many times as they want on any number they want. send me something in the mail if this is legit - havent gotten anything yet in mail. i'm not giving out personal info randomly on the phone w/ all the scammers in the world these days!  sorry!

They have called me everyday for the last three days, the number 812 218 3144 is listed on the Census Bureau website, I still don't give my person information out over the phone when someone calls me, there is a way that you can make caller ID show any number you want it to. Beware !

They called and I could not understand what she was saying so I told her she had the wrong number.  Fifteen minutes later a different lady called (who I could understand) and she said she needed information and needed to verify stuff.  I told her that they had called and had some wierdo who I could not understand.   I told her to go away and I would not answer any questions.  She said I had to.  I asked her if I would be arrested if I did not answer her questions and she would not answer me.  She just kept rattling on about what I should do.  I told her again she was waisting my time and to go away.  She said have a nice day and hung up.

Received a call from 812 218 3144.Claims to be Us Dept of Commerce Census Bureau and wanted to know if I received the questionnaire in the mail and that it was mandatory that it be answered. I told them that party wasn't home and they said any one at home could answer the questions for them. I told them no. They left the number and a reference case # to call them back. I DON"T THINK SO!  This is a scam and they are just pushing for private info. Do not give these people ANY INFO!

I received a voicemail this AM from 812-218-3144 US Census Bureau, asking me to call 888-817-2153 with a 6-digit case nbr.

I found thus page and read 20 or so comments. I decided to go to the US Government's website and get to the real US Census Bureau.  The website is CENSUS.GOV. You can also get there from USA.GOV. I searched through the site and found out the call was possibly legitimate.

They try to contact you by mail first then they will try calling. They conduct lots of different surveys, not just the big 10th year one.

I found a phone number on their website you can call to answer the survey by phone. I felt more comfortable call that number because I knew the number was legitimate. The number is 800-354-7271.

I called that number and mentioned the call I received, etc. I was connected to a gentleman who confirmed that the case number I gave him was legitimate and he told me the address and phone number associated with the call.

He explained that my home and several others in the neighborhood were selected to represent the households in the area. The information gathered is used provide entitlements for lical schools, etc.

I've participated in written census surveys. All the questions asked were normal and reasonable.

FYI - The gentleman mentioned Title 13 to me as well. It is something HE is subject to if he did not keep my information confidential. He could be hit with a $25,000.00 fine and up to something like 8 years in jail.

One last thing, there is a telephone scam about computer operating systems but it is not associated with the 812-218-3144 number.

I got a call from this number today and the guy that left the message was giggling and sounded drunk. If they expect me to comply with ANYTHING they will need to have someone that knows how to handle themsleves contact me.

After reading all of your posts, I wonder why you spend any time on the phone with these folks.  Fortunately, I have Caller ID and I just don't answer numbers I don't know, especially if they begin with 8 or 9.  It's annoying, but the phone is there for YOUR convenience, not theirs.  And, if you do answer and don't know the folks...simply hang up.  Remember, they are interrupting your time and you don't owe them that.

I received a telephone call from the 812 phone number on March 1, 2014. They called my mobile telephone number and left a message, stating they were the Census Bureau and gave me a case number or reference number. After doing some research, it is apparent that the United States Census Bureau does make monthly telephone calls which helps track of changes in local demographics and economic trends including unemployment, which is important information to have monthly rather than just every 10 years.
However, I noticed that while the telephone number on my caller ID seemed legitimate, the caller ID indicated that it was coming from Albany, New York. If the call had been legitimate, I believe it should've indicated that it was originating from Jefferson Indiana, which is the location corresponding to the 812 telephone number. I would be very willing to provide information to the legitimate Census Bureau, but unfortunately is very difficult to determine whether or not the call we are receiving is legit. If the caller threatens any type of legal action against us, then it is a fake call, as the different US code titles refer to the Census Bureau's obligations to keep our private data private.

For the past three weeks or longer I've been getting a call from 812-218-3144 saying they are from the Census Bureau I don't answer them I know that the area code there calling from is around Evansville, Indeana why would they call me when I live in Michigan I would think that the Michigan bureau would call instead. Anyway I don't plan on answering them no matter how many times they call.

There people harassed my mother by threatening her if she didn't mail in this info. I told her it was a scam but she didn't listen. Beware
