I made a trip to Texas (1100 miles from home) last week and they were on the ball and asked if I was using my card at various gas stations. Glad to know BBT Debit Fraud is monitoring things that closely.

Called and left a message with my case # - Skeptical as I was, I looked on google and found this site; called bbt's main line to check the authenticity and it was confirmed. Called back 1-877-557-0506, gave Maria my Case #, she asked for my zip code, year of birth, and the middle digits of my social; somebody tried to charge $350 to my card for a 'sports world' purchase...

The only thing I don't understand is that she said it was a debit transaction - My card hasn't been used for a week (it's still in my wallet), and how do you make a debit purchase without having the card in person...?

Yup - BBT debit card fraud services. They wanted to confirm several purchases I made.  They were all mine but certainly glad they monitor.

^^Truth.  It's a phishing scam.  BB&T only has my cell and these noobs called my house phone.  If you get a call from this number, call BB&T at the regular customer service number, do not fall for this phone scam.

Also, every post on this site claiming it's legit is being made by the originators of the scam.  Don't be stupid.  Be safe and call BB&T customer service at their regular number.  They will tell you there's nothing wrong with your account and collect a report of the phishing attempt.

The call came in from 252-360-3399. Nathan from BB&T Debit Card Fraud Monitoring left a voicemail asking to call back at 877-557-0506 and referenced a 7-digit case number, saying he wanted to discuss events on my debit card. When I called the 800 number back, a different representative asked only for the 4th and 5th digits of my social, my DOB, and billing zip so it did not strike me as a scam. They then informed me that the bank had declined an attempted payment of $504 to Macy's in Houston, TX, which I definitely did not authorize. They notified me that the debit card had since been frozen, that a new one was being mailed, and that I could still utilize my funds through checks and bank tellers. I'm quite thankful for their vigilance.

Yes this is a legit #. After coming home today, there was a message on my phone claiming to be from BBT's fraud Dept. and I did call BBT's main # to verify it. They asked NO personal ID questions and just gave me 2 transactions that were brought to their attention and both were made by myself so at least there was no fraud but it is good to know they were on top of the security and interest of my debit card.

This evening I received a call that was FORWARDED from 877-557-0506.  The caller identified himself as being from the BB&T Fraud Department and, for security purposes, asked for my zip code which I gave him.   At that point, my husband began to shout at me to give no information whatsoever.  The caller, hearing his tirade, suggested I call the BB&T customer service number printed on the back of my card   and ask to be transferred to the Fraud Department..  I called, but was unable to reach a human being.  I then called back to 877-557-0506 and the man who answered was the one who had called me.  I told him I had tried to call BB&T at the customer service number but could not reach a human.  He suggested pressing the option #2 key two times and when I failed to give the information requested, I would eventually be put through to an operator to whom I could request transfer to Fraud.  I did get through to a rep who asked for my SSN.  Again, my husband assumed the worst, that my call had been diverted, and I did not provide her the requested information.  To be safe, I am going to my local branch tomorrow.

Just called me saying somebody tried to make a $350 purchase with my BBT debit card, one that I did not make. Asked for my birth year, city and zip code and asked to cancel my current card and issue a new one. I obliged to his requests and immediately after hanging up, I checked my account. It turns out it was legitimate as I have a different debit card number now only seconds after the call. Not a scam.

DEFINITELY legitimate call from BB&T Fraud dept.  Echoing the comments of others - thanks a bunch to them for looking out for us (from someone who has also had to deal with the anguish of contending with identity theft).

It is indeed good advice to start by calling the number on the back of your BB&T Visa check card - this is what I did.  They WILL verify that this IS a legitimate number/call.

Abe, PLEASE STOP posting erroneous information! You are only confusing people, and are validating to others as well that you are either a mental midget or an [***].

This is a legitimate number.  They called to make sure that two of my purchases were valid.  They were valid, but I'd rather they be overly cautious.  A few minutes is worth it if it saves me from fraud.

This is a legit number.  It's great BB&T are on top of things even though the charges that got flagged ended up being legitimate. I'm pleased.

I got a call (on my unlisted home phone number) from "Greg" who said he was calling for PNC Bank.  He asked to speak to my daughter about her account.  He said he couldn't talk to me about that.  He left a case number and asked for her to call him back at 877-557-0506, a BB&T number (not PNC Bank).
Sounds to me like Greg was confused, or BB&T has a problem.

Got a call from BBT Debit Card Fraud Montoring Department. Some guy named Freddie asked me to verify the zip code, the middle two digits of my social and the day that I was born. Thank god he called because somebody tried to use my card at a website for over $1,000. BBT is on the ball!

Recvd. msg. from above number from Courtney from BB&T Card Monitoring Services (24/7) ref. recent activity on my debit/check card at 1-877-557-0506..
Confirmed above number through BB&T Ph#1-800-226-5228 on back of debit card.  They transferred me to their Card Monitoring Services/Fraud Unit.
They only asked for my zip code and asked if I made 2 transactions in Virginia.  Of course, I did not.  They advised one transaction was declined; one was so recent, we had to wait for it to process.
Debit card cancelled; they will issue another in 7-10 days.

You're a complete idiot - it is 100% legit, and you are completely incorrect. It is a verified BB&T number, and it is their fraud dept.Get your facts straight before you open your mouth, moron.
