Luckily I realized I was scammed after 6 texts.

But I will not pay the 12$ I "owe" to ROGERS.

I have unlimited texto: I can answer/receive as many textos as I want.
Somehow, I received a notification on my cell such as:
    "Win an apple iPad"
I clicked on it, answered a FREE question.
I did nothing else, I gave no personal information to anyone.

    THEY texted me.
I answered them, I have the free right to do so, and they want me to pay for this?

It's ROGERS fault if they can't protect my phone number.
[***] off scammers, I'll sue ROGERS and I'll sue wixawin.

I just filed a compliant on CRTC, as they are the ones that allow these scumbag to scam us. I STRONGLY recommend that EVERYONE who has been scam, take 5 minutes to file a compliant with CRTC. Here's a template:

Recently, after restarting my smart phone, I got a message for a chance to win a iphone showing in the front screen, I thought it was from my cell phone service provider, Rogers. I was asked to answer a question. I did and that's all I did. Then I start getting text message from 88588. Today, when I check my wireless bill, I get a Third Party charge of $XXX from The Mobile Gener °88588 Wixawin SMS Trivia Game for the text message they sent me, of no value. I didn't agree to have any charge from this company. I was told by Rogers that I need to take this matter up with CRTC, thus, this compliant. I want my money back! Not because I can't afford it, but because of principle. This is clearly a scam. If the CRTC will not do anything about this, because nothing can be done under the current law/regulation, then, I will start a petition on OpenMedia.ca to stop this type of practice.

This company uses a 'bait and switch' scam to get customers to enter a pin for a free entry to answer a quiz question and win a prize.  They say to just enter your phone number and they will sent a pin number for you to use to enter the free contest. In code in very small print they send some message which the average person doesn't understand, especially if they don't usually use text in which they claim is the proof that we agreed to receive quiz questions sent to the cell phone four times a week at a cost of $2.00 for each question.

I didn't find anything out until my wife showed me the bill a month later.  I don't use text, so any messages that come are just deleted immediately.  The following is the text message the claimed to have sent me:

2011-12-01 01:39:54     out     88588     PIN @ end of msg. Enter it now! Trivia subscription ($2/Ques, 4Qs/wk) Info 18666700126 End? txt STOP. StdMsgRatesMayApply Ur PIN: 5167

I did not knowingly enter into any kind of agreement to pay money, and did not know it was possible for them to steal money from me with the help of FIDO

The same thing happened to me, only I was on the computer and they lured me with a chance to win something by answering a trivia question.  They ask for the phone number so that they can send a pin number to enter the contest.  The phone is in my wife's name and even though I phoned Fido and that company as soon as I discovered the charges on the bill, my wife says that there are a lot of charges on it still.

I also want my money back.  I don't think phone companies should be allowed to make charges on a cell phone without a person's clear consent.  If we get enough people united on this, maybe we can get rid of this dishonest practice entirely.

I just got this prepaid phone two days ago. I DID NOT subscribe to this "service" and never would have since I've got a limit on the amount of texts I can send and receive. I've only used the phone to text and call family members. I did connect my phone with Facebook because it's simpler to log in that way, but I doubt if they are the reason this happened. It's hard to tell anymore. I got a TextFree app to help cut down on my prepaid phone limits, and I've never used that service before. I guess it's possible that it could have been connected to this scam somehow.

Either way, I stopped the subscription by texting "STOP" to which they sent me two more messages and asked me to send "STOPALL" on top of that. It's annoying that they ate up so many of my limited text messages, but after reading every other comment here, I'm just happy this is a prepaid phone they can't bill me from. This is a sick scam.
