My business partner has also been receiving premium text messages from 88588, 77277 and 87777 (the former is about Gatorade products). She has been attempting to have the service canceled, to no avail. I recommend that a class action law suit be commenced. If any one is interested. Just contact your local laywer/solicitor. The first 30 minutes consulting is free. This kind of activity must stop. There has a been a recent ruling by CRTC - here is the link to a document issued by them in July 2009.

I have recently found out that the Wireless Telephone Providers do earn a small portion of revenue collected from the fees paid by the subscribers.

Do they have an interest in stopping this abuse of the system? - I do not believe so.

This is a multi-million dollar business.

Awesome.  We'll let the big players in the private industry (who have a vested interest in maintaining this "no-overhead" revenue stream) self-regulate the 3rd-party companies - citing market forces as the motivating resolver... but ALL the major WSP's take part in this, and NONE of them provide anything beyond marginal protection, because they ALL benefit from this if all agree to take part.  Ugh, no consumer protection from a government agency for an obvious scam.

It's pretty apparent that the three stipulations cited (customer opt-in, mandatory confirmation, and unsubscribing) are being SEVERELY manipulated into deceptive, misleading and outright fraudlent practices by these scamming companies.  The argument of Caveat Emptor doesn't apply to confidence games, ponzi schemes, or pyramid selling... why should it apply to this?  Oh, right - because only stupid poor people are being grifted with this SMS scam at $50-$150 a pop, so it's okay.

    Disgusting, but not that surprising.

This is Impact Mobile - Go to www.impactmobile.com - They apparently bill you $2.00 - you do need to opt in. But if you recently got a phone with a recycled number their technology/systems are not geared up to deal with number portability - thus you get spammed because the previous owner of that number opted in. We get tons of calls about this service. The content comes from WixAWix. Another spammer is MyThum Interactive. Most of the people behind these services are from Holland. (Rather dodgy if you ask me).

I think people should be careful to read everything when they provide any personal information online or otherwise. at least these guys aren't publishing personal information but theres no telling what others will do. I'm glad they're regulated though in spite of some of the comments ive read.

I think that people dont uderstand what they are activating because they don't want to know. They see a real contest with real prizes and are too foolish to see that somthing that looks good and may be too good to be true really is not. Would you buy a house or a car or even sign up for insurance with reading the contract. Come on people please think first read second and stop all the baby chatter.

    Not that stupid
