Do they have anything to do with Citi Financial? I have a car loan through them and am behind but I wouldn't think they would just sell my car loan off to someone else for being a bit behind. I got a call from this company on my cell phone and they left no message.

I tried to call Citi's number and it goes straight to this company now. Apparently, Citi isn't doing car loans any longer and so this company has taken over all of the loans.

I just started receiving calls from them, too. I, too, am with, or WAS with, CitiFinancial for my car loan, and I'm only about a week and a half late on my car payment. When I listened to the voicemail they did ask for me, but I couldn't understand what company name the lady was saying, I only found the name by Googling the phone number. It was a company I've never heard of before. (Santander)

So, as Heather noted ... CitiFinancial must have sold all their car loans? Ugh. I wish that kind of thing was illegal. I hate that you can't choose or control who you are in debt to.

About a day or so after I posted my message, I received something in the mail from CitiFinancial explaining to me how they basically hired these folks to "service" their loans, but that my loan is still owned by CitiFinancial. I find that pretty interesting. A third party to hassle and collect and "service" the loan ...hmm. I will be watching for any abusive tactics that some other folks mentioned. Thank goodness I'll have my car paid within the year. I already don't trust these new guys based on the other comments.

I spoke with the company and set up the payment I had missed. The guys wasn't rude but I don't like the fact that this new company doesn't do Moneygrams which is how you pay. According to the letter I also got, if you send any payments to Citifinancial, it wont credit. It just seems like a big mess! My car will be paid off in March and I can wait to be done with the whole thing!

    Disgruntled w/CitiFinancial and Sandante
The previous posters are correct.  This is Sandanter who bought out all of CitiFinancial's car loans. I have received nothing in the mail or via email from CitiFinancial or Sandanter as of today. I went to CitiFinancial's website but it directed me to Sandanter.  It says on their website there will be no interruption in payments if you have auto draft set up but that is somewhat false.  I pay with auto debit from my bank account each month and it was taken out of my account on time.  I then received this debt collection/late payment call today.
I called back to find out what was going on after I found out who was calling me and it seems this all happened (the final sale of CitiFinancial to Sandanter) on the 6th of September.  My payment was due the 10th and went to CitiFinancial on time but Sandanter has not received it yet as it has to be mailed from Ohio to Texas.

I value my good credit and had the rep from Sandanter confirm three times that this will not be reported as a late payment to the credit bureau. She assured me it would not but that is only if the mail makes it to them in time or nothing goes wrong!! I said "What if it's lost in the mail?" and she only said "All other payments that were already sent by other customers have made it so there shouldn't be a problem. It would only be reported late if it's more than 30 days late."

Well, there would not have been a problem if CitiFinancial AND Sandanter had made their customers aware of this at least 30 days in advance!  I could have easily changed my auto debit with a few strokes on the keyboard and my payment could have gone directly to Sandanter.  And then the added stress of a debt collection call and the worry of my credit, either with the credit bureau or with Sandanter themselves, being affected, really stinks.  Very unprofessional of them and I will not ever use Sandanter again in the future.  Luckily for us we were considering paying this car loan off in full this month.  I had been debating whether to or not but now we will for sure.

I am also blocking this number on my caller block service with my phone company.

This call is from Santander Consumer USA and they service auto loans for HSBC Auto (my case) and Citi now.  I never had issues when my car loan was serviced by HSBC Auto.  Santander will call if you are even a day late and multiple times a day from at least 6 different numbers.  They will even call if you have made payment arrangements  I don't think even one of their phone numbers comes up as Santander.  At least when Ford Credit or Capital One Auto call, I know who the call is from.

Note that this company seems to be use to working with customers with riskier loans so that seems to be how they are handling the HSBC and Citi loan customers they are now servicing as well.  Also this company typically requires references, so if someone has put you down as a reference, they will bug you to try to get information on your friend or relative.

This company is absolutely dispicable. They have harrassed me throughout the day, every single day, for 3 months now. They keep asking for someone I have never even heard of. I don't even know how to pronounce the name. My guess is it's the girl who had my number before I did...who knows. When I tell them that I am not her, they act like I am lying (because we all know people never get new numbers right? *sarcasm*), but say they will take care of it...then call right back a few hours later from a different number! What's strange is they call from all different states. I recall Texas, Montana, and California just to name a few. Do they really think they're fooling anyone? It's still the same stupid automated message every time, no matter which number they use! Idiots. I have a feeling it's just so you can't block them from harrassing you.

And as if all that isn't bad enough, their customer service reps are horribly rude, whether you are nice to them or not. They won't give you their name, but want all of YOUR information, and if asked what exactly it is that they do, they've simply told me "we are a financial institution", or avoid the question altogether.

I reamed one of their reps today. I'm sick of it. She assured me she would put a note on my account (I don't HAVE an account with them!!!) saying that I am not who they are looking for and not to call anymore. A thousand dollars says they call back tomorrow bright and early from one of their "secret" numbers. They always do.

It is Drive Financial but they are now called Santander USA. They are a car financing company for less-than-perfect credit. However, they call multiple times a day and somehow they even get cell numbers when you do not give it to them. They call when you are late with your payment. If you answer and give them a date when you will pay, they will note it and stop the calls. If they call at work, you need to answer and tell them you are not allowed to have those calls at work and they must, by law, stop calling at that number.

Call back the debt-collection agency or creditor at the number given in its message. If it leaves no message, pick up when it next calls. Request a "written collections notice sent via U.S. Mail." It has five business days from the date of the phone call to comply. If it calls during this period (your phone records will document the call), you may sue in federal court for up to $1,000 plus legal fees for violating the Federal Debt Collection Practice Act (FDCPA). If it sends you the written collections notice, the debt collector can begin calls after a 30-day waiting period expires. If the calls begin again, go to Step 3.

Locate a contact address on the written collections notice you received. Don't use a P.O. box; you need a street address. Sometimes it's deliberately buried in the fine print of the notice.

Write to the contact address for proof of its identity (since it's asking you to send money). Ask for proof of the agency's right to collect debt in your own state, not the state in which the agency is located. Ask for the debt amount. Ask for an explanation of any discrepancies you find in debt amounts the agency and creditor report. Ask for the original lender's name and address, and how the agency acquired the debt.

Request that the agency not contact you by phone---only by mail. From the date of the return receipt forward, you can sue it for up to $1,000 (again) for violating the FDCPA, the debt-collection act.

Send the letter "certified mail with return receipt" at the post office and keep the receipt.

Hire a lawyer to sue for the FDCPA violations if calls continue after the date the agency signs the return receipt. List each violation for the lawyer, to maximize the statutory damages award. Don't let legal fees discourage you from getting a lawyer, since they are covered in damages if you win.
