Someone claiming to be doing a market research survey called this afternoon - asking if I was interested in contributing to various charities; such as adopting a child in an African country, donating to RSPB, the National Society for the Deaf and similar. Annoying - as I am registered with the Telephone Preference organisation, in order not to receive unsolicited cold calls.

My phone has just rung with the 01138 number but when I picked it up it went dead.  On finding the above post I was intrigued because we have a deaf son and wonder if that is a link.  We too are registered with Telephone Preference so would just normally say to the called that we are registered with Telephone Preference and they should not be calling.  That normally ends the call fairly quickly.

Same as Maz, just received a phonecall from them... But line went dead and I just did 1471. I didn't call them back (you never know, could be a premium line..)... Am also registered with telephone preference... Very odd altogether

We have had 4 calls from this number today - line is just dead when we pick up. Very strange and also driving us mad!

They just keep calling, it's unbearable! Finally got someone on the phone, but they hung up on me when I questioned them! How to complain about that???

Had this number ring me 4 to 5 times yesterday! They hung up as soon as the answer machine kicked in so didn't manage to hear what they wanted. I'm registered with the TPS but still need to visit this site so often I've got it bookmarked lol

Same as above posts, call came through but line was dead when answered. Did 1471 and recalled number 01138.

yep i got one literally just now. Typed in the number 01138 straight away and this is all i can find anywhere on the internet. i believe this is the first time we've been called by this number and so i am hoping it won't start to become a regular thing as it seems it is for those posting above.

Every time they call they ask for Thomas Brown (not my name), the Indian chap then proceeds to say he's from some research company, after I've told him 3 times my name isn't Thomas, that his name is Dave in the thckest Indian accent ever heard. I just said yeah whatever and hung up

Like Andrew I'm also registered with TPS and shouldn't be receiving any sales calls.Unfortunately TPS has no control over calls from outside the UK.Who's your supplier Andrew? I'm with TalkTalk and while I've no complaints about their service I only started to have this problem after they teamed up with AOL.

Very annoying, i've had 3 calls this morning and when answered the line just goes dead!

Like everyone else, i'm also registered with TPS.

Does anyone know how you go about blocking these calls?

We had 6 calls from 01138 on Wed and 2 yesterday.  I phoned BT (our provider) who said that as this is not a real phone no. they can't block it.  She also said that these firms tend to blitz certain areas and then they move on.  Since we have had no such calls today (fingers crossed) I guess she might be right.

Just had a call from this number wanting to do market research for charity.  He had my name and I said I wasn't interested and before I finished he hung up!  I am registered with telephone preference service as well!

I have caller ID so I can see who is phoning. I've had repeated telephone calls but on answering the line goes dead

I have also had 5 call this evening from this number 01138 and 01024 and 01028 if i answer and speak the line goes dead, but if i answer and don't speak straight away they stay on the line until i speak then hang up..very strange and also very annoying this time of the evening,and up and down like a yoyo...

i am also with talk talk .and since being with them i am getting a large amount of calls from strange numbers

Roger, we're with BT.  Luckily we've had no more calls from this number. We have caller display, so we've put "Pest Survey" into the description. We've done this with previous nuisance callers - all listed as "Pest ..." and also given these numbers a different ring-tone.  Useful, as now we know not to bother answering!  Or perhaps we should just pick up the phone and let them witter on, wasting their money!  Can anyone explain the significance of these short numbers?  They're obviously not a conventional UK-type phone number.

Just had a call from them line went dead

Had 4 calls go on me dead this evening...All but the last one hid their number.  The latter was 01138 and occured about a minute ago at 19:46.

Got a call from this number about 15 minutes ago. Line went dead straight away. when i got the number i searched google and found this. we have TPS too
