Summed It Up replies to JM
You're absolutely correct JM - ex-MORI boss man Sir Bob Worcester saw this starting to happen in the '80s with the rise of telesales etc. and had the foresight to work with BT on the creation of the Telephone Preference Service as a means of reducing the number of calls members of the public received, realising that if people were getting annoyed constantly with other calls they would react to MORI in exactly the same way.

However, telesales continues to adapt with so-called "surveys" resulting in a sales pitch at the end, and so on. Also since '97 there was a marked increase in the number of "public consultations" being run through MORI by the ever-expanding list of quangos under Labour. So more and more calls to the general public about local authority projects, education schemes, NHS, police initiatives etc. All pretty worthwhile in isolation but when taken altogether, serious overkill.

AND, for the last three years MORI has been running the Active People Survey (just finished last month), which has involved calling an enormous amount of numbers, persistently (due to the way-too-optimistic sampling methodology). Info here - http://www.sportengland.org/research/active_people_survey.aspx . With that finished and the new government's views on "public consultation" (ie. why ask? The public will get what we decide is good for them - that's what they voted us in for...), there has been a marked downturn in general public calls in the last month, with MORI returning to it's more well-known roles, "who are you going to vote for?" once a month and business-to-business/inter-governmental work.

But back to your point - automatic calls are pretty much heading towards the end of their useful life for MORI, although there are still some types of survey that can only be a true and random representation of viewpoints when conducted this way (thinking more "local" issues here, as opposed to national). I think we will see MORI heading into a lot more of the online and "panel" based research in the coming year - FYI, two of their call centres have been closed down this year already...

Just took a call from these. They are doing a research survey on behalf of aberyswyth & Cardiff university about people living in rural Wales. Asked about things like public transport, housing availability  & local amenities. The whole call lasted 27 minutes in total.

This called this morning, then just now and I answered it. They are based inEdinburgh. I didn't get the name as the accent was very broad but he said something about surveys. I asked where he got mynumber from and he said not from a list but they do random number dialling. I pointed out that I am registered with the Telephone Preference Service and would not like to be bothered with such calls as I do not give this number out; the only person who has this number is my elderly mother who lives down the other end of the country. I asked him politely to please remove my number from his list to which he didn't even reply, just hung up.
Politeness doesn't cost anything even if inflation has just gone up...

I'm with TPS too, but that means nothing to this unscrupulous lot.  They've called me all week, I don't pick up to unknown callers so finally searched the web and found out who they are, have emailed them three times so far - not even so much as a reply, talk about total rudeness.  I agree with other comments, there is no excuse for such an invasion of people's privacy, it's obvious we haven't got the time or inclination to answer their stupid surveys.  Morons.

Got a phone call from this number last night. I didn't answer, but it was at a rather unsociable hour so I found it a bit odd. Let's hope they're not too persistant.
