Phoned us today 13.33. left no message.

This number just called me. Said he was from the UK Energy Assessment Team. I put the phone down as usual. These callers are a pain in the backside.

This number has rung twice today. My wife took the first call and believing it to be anAsian call centre put the phone down. Dialling 1471 we were surprised number had not been withheld  and established as Glasgow, East Kilbride. At 17.19 the phone rang and when answered no one spoke. 1471 revealed the same numbers earlier. We then rang back to hear a rather irritated Glaswegan accent saying he had taken over the business an some "idiot" - his word was still using the number and advised me to report it to Ofcom. They only work 9 to 5 phone number  3001233000  and As far as I could see their web site had no obvious page to make such a 'Report'

Rather than someone still using an old number, it is possible that this number is "spoofed".  If you think about it, when you ring a number you get through to the person who owns that number, i.e. the person who had the business before the irritated Glasgwegian could not still have that number if the Glasgwegian now has it.  Does that make sense?  It is more likely that a scammer is using a number which just happens, on this occasion, to be real and in use.  If you Google Ofcom and look for Ofcom Advice and complaints it will take you to the proper place.  On the right hand side it says "landline, mobile and internet".

I'm not sure if I'm the person (or one of a few) you spoke to, but I can confirm that we are getting a number of calls on the telephone number 0141-280-0056 (which is our number). The callers say they have been called by a number that is one digit too long (for example, 0141-280-00563) which when dialled will reach us because the excess digits are dropped. It has been a very recent phenomenon.

So far I've not been able to fully explain the problem. A couple of theories I've had:

1. The number 0141-280-00563 has been entered on someone's phone system (either deliberately or accidentally) meaning calls get put through to us.
2. The number is actually 0141-280-0563, and some recipients are accidentally noting it down wrong. (This seems unlikely.)

I don't personally think calling Ofcom directly will be the best approach. They are regulators for the industry that I think you would call in the event of a dispute with your telecoms provider. I think speaking to your provider (whether it's BT, Virgin or other) would provide the fastest outcome. They should be able to inspect where the calls are coming from and resolve the issue with the caller I would hope.

There is really not a lot we can do about it. Your telecoms provider (who is handling the call for you) is in a much better position to police the issue than we are. Our situation is much like someone sending mail with our address as a sender; it would be impossible for us to track down the sender, but the mail service might be able to.

In fact, you must have spoken to me, as you mentioned the automated message from the irritated man referring you to Ofcom.

Indeed, when I call 0141-280-0563 I get that same automated message.

When you call 0141-280-0056 you get me.

Since you've called both, which is correct, ie. what is the exact number that BT's 1471 service reports?

12.25pm 28/08/12 Have just had a all from 0141 280 0563 . Definitely the correct number from 1471.  Silent call!

just had a phone call from this number, there was nothing at the other end and it just cut off, this is bl...dy annoying,

I keep getting calls from this number and never leaves a messsage.

Bob's number 2 theory must be correct cos i've just had a cal from 0141 280 0563 who asked for a Mrs.... that wasnt me. I said no-one of that name lives here and he rudely replied 'what'. I repeated myself to which he hung up.

Phone call; no Tx on answer. 1471 gives the origin. When called the Irate Glaswegian (mentioned earlier) and answer machine refered to an idiot who previously had the number who does not reply to messages and invites report to OFCOM.

In response to your post and the additional 3 digit when one does 1471 the additional 3 auto calls back the number the recipients are charged 10p so it seems you as the owner o f this number should be reporting ths to bt and ofcom beware this scam it needs reporting both sides silent calls automated set up you can hear beeps

Twice today they rang along with 10 other calls either international, witheld or unavailable.  Bloody annoying

It is time and indeed, long past time, to make cold calling illegal - some of you have said it is annoying to get two or three of these calls per day and I'm sure it is but I have been experiencing 10 to 15 such calls within the space of a few hours.  Is it being done deliberately? I'm beginning to think it is, especially since I have answered and given THEM the silent treatment.  I am already on the telephone preference scheme - it has been to no avail, even now after several months. What does one do? I am soon going to require treatment at the mental hospital (no joke!).  It is just dreadful. Please, can ANYONE stop these calls.  Tomorrow I shall try my local MP.  And finally, no, I am not paranoid  -    -   - Yet.....................

I think I've established that the number making the cold calls is 0141-280-0563 and not ours. It just seems to be accident that a few people are mis-dialing an extra zero and getting through to us.

That might sound unlikely, but if the call centre is making 2000 calls a day and 100 people call the number back, there could be a couple of people that made the mistake.

Since it's not our number I have no discussion to have with my provider at this time.

Got a call from this number at 10.50am today.
