For the past 6 months my mother in law has been receiving correspondence for a mobile phone bill, in the name of an individual, who we do not know and, has never resided at her address. We have phoned & written to the mobile phone company and 2 debt collection agencies telling them this individual does not reside at my mother in laws address.
This morning she received a call from 01482 483 251 enquiring about the same individual. About 5 minutes after a concerned neighbour called as she had been called from the same number enquiring about the residents at my mother in laws address.

I haven't heard from this lot for several months and thought that they had actually paid attention to me the last time they called and removed my number from their system.  The number they called from before was slightly different (last few digits).

They are Wescot Credit Services and they have offices in the west of Scotland as well as in Hull.  They provide what their website describes as an ethical tracing service.  They called me looking for a former neighbour. The neighbour in question walked out on his wife and children in December 2008.  His wife was finally forced to move house several months ago.  I told her that Wescot had called me about her husband and she was mortified.

I reported Wescot to Consumer Direct/Trading Standards who told me that they are breaking the law in England but in Scotland the only thing they can be charged with is harassment.

The last time they called I told them I had nothing to say to them and that I wanted my name removed from their system.  It worked for a few months until today.  They are still asking about the same neighbour and I've told them again I don't want them calling me.

They are scum and shouldn't be encouraged.  Report them to Consumer Direct / Trading Standards.  If enough people complain we might get rid of scum like them.

They just called me, the caller had a thick scottish accent so I had trouble understanding what he said fully but he did ask three times for a Mark Williams by name - I have never heard of him and said that first time but the caller still asked for him another twice!!! I ended putting the receiver down called 1471 and here I am.

Caller - with Scottish accent - called and tried to ask my young daughter for information about neighbours - rang off quite quickly when I took up the call.  This cannot be considered good practice surely?  Any reputable company, on realising they were speaking with a child should ask to speak to an adult.  The caller did not identify themselves or the company from whom they were calling.

They have called my mother twice in recent days asking about people who live down the road. She has just been widowed and this is all she needs, so I rang 0141 300 5300 and suggested that next time they did it I would be reporting them to the police, calling the Financial Ombudsman and writing to Watchdog. I don't expect it will do much good as they seem to be thick-skinned neanderthals.

    MIKE the legal beagle
This number is Westcott Finance which is located in Hull.
Clare Mc Caffery is the Director which is in charge of this section, her direct number is 01482 590 560
THe Company HO is Saltcoat Ayrshire and the post code to put in your sat nav is KA21 5JT
    Company Number SC084131.

NOW the legal bit  For my sins I am a Legal Advocate and I can offer some advice about nuisance calls, that applies not only to this company but any which is causing nuisance, even if you do have debt they should NOT be causing nuisance or stress as this could be constrewed as agrivated harrasment on which can attract a prison sentance if persistant. The administration of Justice Act is there for your protection as the implication and application of proceedures is strictly controlled and government guidelines must be observed. If your call is not related to yourself, ie a person who has lived in your home before you, you are not obliged to divolge information as you may infringe The Data Protection Act, as the phone could be overheard or surveillance gismos by Terrorists, thugs and other undesireables. You simply tell these people you are not permitted by law to part with ID over a phone network to person or persons unknown who refuse to answer your questions of their identity.
Actually BT or any service provider as much as they deny it are responsible as the calls are being made on their lines and nuisance calls or 'unsolicited calls' are breaching the privacy act as well as other acts also The Malicious Communications act 1988 also applies in this case.
International calls are indeed a nuisance and I have tracked down a market research company who are based in India and the UK they are responsible together with other sister companies of 70% of the international nuisance calls, they are 'gfk' I have warned this company by contacting their managing director that he faced £1,000,000 fines and even imprisonment if this was not stopped, and guess what most all my international calls mysteriously have stopped. Don't stand for it complain as what they are doing is strictly illegal and a criminal offence.

All nuisance phone calls... why suffer they are ALL ILLEGAL !
FIGHT BACK ! Do the following
    1. Report immediatelly to your phone operator to have the call blocked, they have an obligation to protect their customers against abuse and harassment .
    2. Report to OFCOM
       see  www.ofcom.org.uk/complain/ - 14k
    3. You can contact the Police as the company who is making the call is against the law.
    a. The laws are the Telecommunications Act 1984 and 2000
    see  hhtp://www.cps.gov.uk/legal/section12/chapter_k.html
    b. The harassment Act 1997
    see  http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1997/ukpga_19970040_en_1

    4. If it is discovered that the company is a bailiffs or a credit card company then they could have easily have broken the law by breaking the following:
    a. The administration of justice Act 1970 Section 40
    b. The Data protection act 1998 various sections, in disclosing personal information over a phone line containing personal information for others to hear or overhear on say an answer phone.
    5. Contact the Office of fair trading and report the company when you discover who it is, they have great powers.
    www.oft.gov.uk/oft_and_cd/ - 21k
    6. When you have done this claim back your expences and don't be affraid to name and shame.
I hope this is of help and it is about time we all stood together to stamp this out once and for all.
REMEMBER your telephone operator/service providers are aiding and abetting this illegal activity and are liable, especially as they are earning off the backs of this scum by creaming off their commission, the customs and excise do not escape criticism as they are getting Value added tax, illegally !
IT IS TIME WE FAUGHT BACK BIG TIME - DO IT NOW !

Under Government legislation introduced on 1st May 1999 and replaced on 11th December 2003 by the
Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003, it is unlawful to make unsolicited telesales/marketing calls to individuals who have expressed their wish not to receive such calls.

    Tellecommunications Act 1990
Telecommunications Act 1984  improper use of a public phone system (menacing, inconvenience, offensive, causing anoyance
    the harassment act 2000
    The Malicious Communications Act 1988
The unwanted goods and services act 1971,
The Data Protection Act  in forcing personal details to be made public over the telephone

Data Protection Act 1998 is designed to prevent access by third parties to a Data Subject’s Personal Data to be disclosed to a third party or used in a situation that would normally be considered ultra-vires (unlawful). Telecommunications Act 1984 section 43.  Improper use of public telecommunication system—(1)   A person who—  (a) sends, by means of a public telecommunication system, a message or other matter that is grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character; or(b) sends by those means, for the purpose of causing annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety to another, a message that he knows to be false or persistently makes use for that purpose of a public telecommunication system, shall be guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to imprisonment or a large fine or both. Exceptions to this are generally the Police or Government and very few others.

In computing, PHISHING is an attempt to criminally and fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication, the same rule applies, help others by reporting them too.

If a UK company can be held responsible for any call covered by these regulations and powers, then the place from where the call was originated makes no difference.

To stop other nuisance phone calls, go to the following website: http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/ BUT beware you are not covered forever, you have to renew your application every year.

Now you have the information act right now and nip this thing in the bud
    Good luck
    Mike

True call is a new device that plugs into your phone line and intercepts calls, voice recognition protects against recorded calls, any call which says press 1 for this or that are barred, your friends and family get straight through immediately without any hold up wheras the company calls are held up and checked out. Calls you do want being business oriantated can be on your favourites list and they get straight through. I think that this is well worth checking out.

I just had a call, they asked me about my neighbours 2 doors up.  As that house is full of rented out rooms, I could not help.  Suggested they stuck a note through the letter box (which they said they had already done).  I then suggested they speak to the landlord for forwarding details.

I've had a few missed calls, over the last few days, from the number 01482 483 251 but the caller never left a message. I didn't recognise the number and did a google search, our number is on the telephone preference service and we shouldn't get cold calls. I've read the posts and today at 9.10am my phone rang. It was a girl with a Hull accent asking me about someone with the name of Routledge living at number 22! I asked her why she though it ok to ask me this as it's none of my business. She said they were within their rights to do this. Now I live in the Scottish countryside and we are a terrace of 5 houses and the nearest houses are way up the hill. We've  lived here for 20 years and we are the newest nieghbours and there is certainly no one with that name living at number 22 !! She didn't give the name of the road, so I can only assume that this person lives somewhere further up the hill. I asked her why she was calling me and she said she got my number from the phone book. But she got my name and address from somewhere else, I can't see her going through the phone book looking for someone living in the same street! So she must have been using the voters roll. This just can't be within the law and if it is, then it shouldn't be.

rang today asking about my next door neighbour. My teenage son answered & said he didn't know the neighbour & they hung up . Googled the number & ended up here . Will now be reporting call as these people should not be contacting me about people not in any way related.

Had a call from a Scotish accented woman from this number asking about a neighbour.   I traced the number to Wescot via google.   The Westcot website (according to my antivirus) tried to install a 'trojan' on my computer.  Please BEWARE !!
