I was persuaded to use sigma/ bluelight magazine on a cold call, they made out they were working with the police force in my area,
I then realised from the letters that there was something wrong and i rang them, i was past the 7 days that they said was the limit to cancel.

I got very abusive and told them straight that they didn't know who the F++k i am and they will regret this, also told them that i was not the person that answered the original call, (lies). I called their bluff and asked for the recorded cal to be e-mailed to me (it didnt come)  I then repeatedly abused them on the phone and wasted hours of their time , by changing the wording on my ad to --- SIGMA ARE CONNING PEOPLE< THEY ARE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE POLICE OR EMERGENCY SERVICES....

he said ok he would forward it , but then i started stating what colour i wanted each letter to be ..........lol

He got bored and i said i have the right to change my advert..........:)

I then called back repeatedly and in the end was told that the order has been cancelled :)))

Jigsaw Children's charity gives just 0.7 per cent of money to good causes.

BY NICK SOMMERLAD ON DECEMBER 18, 2008 11:25 AM IN CHARITY

The Jigsaw Children's Support Foundation claimed it aimed "to put a smile on the faces of children who need it most".

But just 0.7 per cent of the money it raised went to good causes.

They signed a deal with Andrew Lownsbrough's Sapphire Media, Lancs-based fundraisers we've investigated before, but cancelled it after complaints.

Then Jigsaw raised money by mailing badges and teddy bears for "charity" raffles.

It raked in £310,000 - but paid HALF to a trustee's firm and then deducted their "costs".

Jigsaw's collectors breached fundraising guidelines at supermarkets too.

The Charity Commission froze its accounts and trustees Susan Manock, Stephen Fletcher and Tony Williams have now dissolved it.

The commission "believes the charity operated as a professional fundraiser, not a charity.

"As it did nothing else it's possible it never operated as a charity."

Good causes got £1,500 - a big hole in the Jigsaw.

    "charity" publishers fleece generous advertisers
BY ANDREW PENMAN ON APRIL 24, 2008 11:49 AM IN CHARITY
Hellish. That's how hairdresser Linzi Booth describes being chased to pay for an advert she didn't want and had never ordered.

Linzi is just one of countless victims of a rampant scam to fleece kind-hearted businesses.

Figures just released by the Insolvency Service show that 60 rogue publishing companies which claimed to publish "good cause" booklets have been shut down by the courts since 2000.

The Insolvency Service says it is second only to VAT fraud as the biggest scam operating out of the North West.

The conmen claim their booklets, wallplanners and diaries will help drug awareness, road and fire safety and crime prevention.

They tout for advertising but what the generous victims don't know is that the booklets often don't even exist.

The latest bent firm to be shut down is Crime Prevention Advisory Services Limited.

Dozens of small companies complained to Trading Standards or Consumer Direct to say they were either being hounded to pay for an advert they hadn't ordered or had paid for an ad but no publication was ever produced.

"In either case, Crime Prevention Advisory Services had aggressively pursued the small business for payment," says the Companies Investigation Branch of the Insolvency Service.

The firm was run by 24-year-old Joseph Stringer and Edwina Dobbs, 29. "I don't want to talk about it," spluttered Stringer outside his grotty semi in Droylsden, Manchester.

"Why are you asking it, it's been closed down," he sneered before jumping into a top-of-the-range convertible Merc.

These rogues lie about how many copies of their booklets they'll print.

They lie when they tell unwilling businesses that they previously agreed to advertise.

They lie about suing their victims if they don't pay up... the last thing they want is a hearing in court.
They often even lie about who's behind these shameful operations.

Hourglass Design, one of the latest batch to be liquidated was run on paper by Susan Reid of Middleton, Lancs, but in reality the boss was her son Adrian, 25.

His previous bogus "good cause" publishers included Peterson Lloyd & Co, which cheated business advertisers of £500,000, Pemberton Slater, which raked in £157,000, and Ambito which skimmed an incredible £940,000.

Linzi, a hairdresser in Solihull, West Mids, was cold-called by a rep for something called Vardis, which publishes booklets for a children's charity.

Although she refused to place an ad, she did agree to receive more details through the post.

Then, she says, Liverpool-based Vardis used a recording of their conversation as "proof" that she placed an order and had put debt collectors on to her, demanding £524. This is despite Solihull Trading Standards telling Vardis that it needs evidence in writing that a contract with Linzi exists and that its recording "has obviously been edited".

Vardis manager Mark Andrews told us: "We are in a difficult industry with lots of publishers, some of who leave a lot to be desired.

"But we are one of the goods guys, working for a genuine charity."

Do they tell potential advertisers that the charity gets just 12.5 per cent of the money raised?
"We do if they ask," he replied.

But at least they won't be chasing Linzi any more.

    Vardis's sick kids charity scam
BY NICK SOMMERLAD ON MAY 17, 2007 7:15 AM IN CHARITY
HERE'S a man who claims to have helped 500,000 vulnerable children who have suffered terrible abuse.

This is how he did it... Andrew Lownsbrough runs Vardis, a publishing company based in Ormskirk, Lancs.

His call centre staff cold-call businesses around the country, asking them if they want to advertise in its charity booklet for the Foresters' Fund For Children.

The Foresters' Fund gets a cut so everybody's happy.

Er, no, not exactly. Rupinder Lotay was asked to pay £347 for an advert for his East London bridal hire firm but was told that he'd have to wait two months to see a copy.

He refused to pay - like Chris Naylor, who runs a catering business in Ilkley, Yorks.

Chris was sent a proof of his advert but it was an exact copy of one he'd already placed in another magazine. "I believe that I'm being asked to pay for an advert in a booklet that doesn't exist," he said.

Vardis claims it distributes 15,000 copies of its booklets but just 12 per cent of the money raised goes to the Fund.

The fundraisers also insist the charity has seen a "significant increase in its turnover" during their six-year collaboration.

Which is strange, because the fund's gross income in 1999/2000 was £85,361 and it has dropped steadily ever since to just £32,000 in 2005/2006.

The charity says that it helped 285,000 distressed and disturbed children last year by awarding grants to chosen projects - which works out at 17p per youngster.

Last year, Vardis teamed up with the Laura Crane Trust, a charity that supports cancer research and teenage cancer victims.

Jacquie Roeder, whose daughter Laura died from the disease, agreed to an 80/20 split on fundraising - in favour of Vardis. But the complaints from advertisers were soon flooding in.

"We are very sad that people who wanted to help our charity have got caught up in something so awful," Jacquie told us.

"We saw some of the wall-planners and there were no contact details for the advertisers. They were effectively useless."

Advertisers who refused to pay were chased by something called Crown Debt Recovery, using a consumer credit licence issued to Andrew Lownsbrough.

The Laura Crane Trust broke its contract with Vardis in September, after getting £3,520. The charity has no idea how much Vardis pocketed.

There has also been a previous incarnation of this sham. Vardis GB Ltd went into liquidation in 2003 owing £69,000.

The current version coincidentally operates out of offices that were previously used by the notorious Barrington House Publishing Corporation. That lot was shut down by the courts after raising £3.5million for wall-planners for sick kids. Just 5p in every £1 went to charity.

Lownsbrough, 37, wasn't there when we called, so we waited for him at his home two miles away.

But when he arrived in his new £80,000 BMW M5 he wouldn't answer our questions.

If you want to donate to the Laura Crane Trust, please visit its website lauracranetrust.org or call 0148 451 0013.

If you want to donate to Andrew Lownsbrough, you need your head examined.

I was called by someone representing Foresters Fund For Children, it sounded legit on the phone so I initially agreed to go ahead. It was £240 inc VAT for a 1/8 ad in the magazine published by Vision. I then researched the charity online and learnt of all their scams. I shortly received an invoice for the £240, I replied by post that I wanted to cancel after seeing their history. My request to cancel was ignored. A couple of weeks later I received by email a proof of my advert, it was very unprofessional and obviously just a template from the internet, I did not want my company being represented by such a rubbish advert. The email stated it was to late to cancel or make amendments, I replied to the email demanding they cancel the advert and stated I had sent them a letter previously regarding it. I got an auto-reply saying someone would be in touch within 72 hours, since then I have been bombarded with phone calls asking for payment, all from mobile numbers. I have spoken to my local police and they advised to have no further contact with Foresters/Vision.
I will wait to be summoned to court for the money I guess, either way, I won't be paying a penny....

    sigma fraud, blue fraud.....
These are back up and running using other scam and scare tactics. Sigma just phoned me pretending to be another safety company on behalf of the police saying I have b ordered advertising which i have not. told them i had reported them to the police and got a crime.number at which stage they said to me no you haven't. I also told them I new nothing of them and if they were sigma and pretending to bee some one else then I had canceled on a number of occasions and also reported to trading standards. He then said I would be invoiced next week, at that point I then took the advice of action fraud and hung up. They tried to call.back on a withheld number, and i blocked there call.

I have had several missed calls over the past week from a withheld number and a mobile 07785 469150.

Luckily I googled the number to see who was calling me, and found out it was linked to a company called Blue Light. Today I answered a withheld number call, it was a guy claiming to work for a local police charity aimed at providing young adults/teenagers with activities to keep them off the streets. I let him garbel on until he asked if for just £134 + VAT they could provide me with a credit card sized ad for my business in a local magazine.....blah blah blah you've read it all before on this post. I just simply said no thank you not interested ans hung up. I then recieved a call from the number above from a lady called Brenda, claiming to be from a children's charity (Friends of something) and the story goes as above, offering business advertising. She asked if I would like to go ahead, giving very vague details. Ofcourse after doing my research on the number I just politely said could she possibly provide me with the registered charity number and VAT number so I could check these were legit as I googled the number she was calling me from which led me to believe it was a scam. her reply was ( In a strong liverpudlian accent)'Oh no love it's not a scam, definitley not a scam, oh no definitley not'  I could then here her rummaging about and she said hang on, let me find that information for you. This continued for about a minute and i could also hear whispering in the background until she asked me for an email address to forward these details on as she didn't have them to hand right now.

I'm glad I did my research before answering as being new business I probably would of fallen for it.

As they say if it sounds too good to be true, it certainly is!

Just wanted to put my story out there, and the phone number incase people like myself were to google the number before taking the call.

    7.  Michael Simister was found guilty of running a support publishing founded and run for the purpose of deception:

    http://www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWHC/Ch/2004/523.html
" The business of the Company was founded and continued on the basis of deception. If, in accordance with the undertakings offered, the deception is removed it seems unlikely that the Company would have any worthwhile business to carry on. Further, the extent and nature of the undertakings and the past conduct of Mr Simister are such that it would be necessary for the Secretary of State, through his officers, to monitor due performance of the undertakings and to supervise the future conduct of the Company's business. That is not his or their function. The matters to which I have referred show, in my judgment, that it is just and equitable that the Company should be wound up. The acceptance of undertakings from the Company or Mr Simister instead of making that order would be an abdication, not an exercise, of the Court's jurisdiction. For all these reasons I will make the usual compulsory order."

"The man who set up Help at Hand UK was called Anthony Simister; Anthony Simister was taken to the High Court in March and his then company The Supporting Link was wound up after the judge said it was based on deception;  Anthony Simister's partner Natalie Selby is a director of Direct Action UK. Anthony Simister gave us their telephone number as a contact number; Wayne Chadwick, also a director of Help at Hand, is known by staff at Direct Action UK. The accounts manager at Help at Hand Philip Hunt is now working for Direct Action UK. We will be sending copies of The Ferret programme to the Charity Commission and to the Department of Trade and Industry, who both want to curb the abuse of charity ads. Greater Manchester police also requested a tape for their Economic Crime Unit."
