I have just received a call from this number asking for my babk details, as I was owed some money.

They had my address, and wanted to send me a cheque. I asked the to repeat themselves, and they started to be very verbally abusive and put down the phone. These calls can be very upsetting, especially if you are a lady. It would also upset elderly people, who may give their details.

Call received dinner time by my eldery mother who passed the phone to me. Caller asked "Who the bloody hell are you" and then "Shut up both of you" before putting the phone down. Caller knew surname, and was rambling on about some bank charges.

Sounds just like the same guy who called me!
Apparently these 01924 numbers can be bought by criminal persons outside of the UK to make it look like they are calling from the UK (ITS THE CODE FOR WAKEFIELD) - I have reported the call to the Police Phone Fraud Department on the number 101 (non-emergency calls to Police).  I suggest everyone else who gets calls of a similar nature does the same in the hope of getting an end put to this.

This caller has been trying this scam for at least 3 months and has been reported many times.  How long does it take to get a phone number discontinued ?

    Not THAT stupid
Seems that today it was my turn to receive a call from 01924215367.  The caller (hereafter to be known as "chummy") had the familiar thick and frequently impenetrable sub-continent accent.  As some other posters have reported, chummy claimed to be calling on behalf of UK government (and cited other credible sounding organisations/departments) and had the good news that he had money to send send me from the millions identified by government that is due to victims of overcharging.  He had my name, address and possibly date of birth (none of which is really secret) so no surprises there.  He then wanted to know what bank I wanted to pay my cheque into.  I asked why this is important, and said I should be able to pay it into any bank.  We to-ed and fro-ed about that for a while until I nominated a high street bank.  Chummy then said he needed to confirm that and asked to check a bank card number against his list.  As others have said, he quoted the first 4 digits of a card number.  This was to reassure me that he already had my card number so that I would be happy to read out the other 12 as further confirmation of who I am.  HOWEVER like others have already described I know that these opening digits are assigned to banks and are no secret so was unimpressed by his ploy (but didn't let on).  After further discussion (fruitless, of course) why chummy would need my card number I invented one.  Of course being made up on the spur of the moment it failed the credibility check and chummy said it didn't match his list.  We to-ed and fro-ed a bit more, this time me saying I had the card in front of me, that his list must be wrong and asking what number did he have.  Chummy was by now starting to be less polite though I hadn't yet provoked any swearing.  Finally he said I'd made up the number and the money would be sent back to the government.  That seems a shame but at least I DID tie this berk up for about 15 minutes so that's a small victory.
Note to self: must make up a credible bank card number for next time.  Of course chummy'll then want to know what the security digits on the back of the card are....

    Warnings:
    - the usual: NEVER give out bank details if you don't know who you're dealing with.
    - don't be surprised if a caller knows your name, address, even date of birth; these aren't secrets therefore DON'T BE IMPRESSED by it either.  Callers quote them to help establish their credibility as representatives of official bodies.

IThey call. Caller knows my surname. Very 'pally' tone. I politely ask for the caller to get to the point please. Something is uttered and they hang up. Timewaster at best. Con artist most probably.

Mum got a call from this number claiming that the bank owed her money. Wanted to verify numbers on bank card, so that the money could be placed back into account. Luckily she had her wits about her after being warned by myself my brother and sister never to give info out. Contacted the bank and they confirmed no one was trying to get a hold of my mum.     Best advice Don't answer and if you do DON'T give any info tell them to Feck Aff

Had many calls from this number recently which I've ignored.  However I've just answered and spoken to a foreign sounding man who called himself "George Wilson".  Apparently I am owed a lot of money from many financial institutions and could I confirm my date of birth and give him Bank details to pay the money into!!.  I said I wasn't interested and put the phone down but still he calls........
