This is an overseas scam and they tend to pass round the same faked UK numbers.  Truecall is good but rather expensive.  There is also the CPR Call Blocker which is cheaper, but buy it from  Argos or Amazon not direct from CPR Global as they tend to put in an unwanted annual fee for a service which is not needed - sneaky.

I received a call yesterday tea-time, Asian man claiming to be from a government department with a cheque to send to me.  He knew my address and post code and asked for my date of birth.   When I refused he got annoyed and said he would be returning my cheque for £7,000 to the government.  Told him to "go away" and hung up.  

Asian male called asking to speak to Mr (my surname) said go on then...he started with you've overpaid some bank charges......CON.....CON....CON.......told him what he should do!!! and hung up couldn't be bothered to play him.  Problem is I'm sure some people are taken in by this, so felt it necessary to add this to these reports.
Tried to call number back unable to do so....how can this be so?  Surely looking at the number of reports and messages about this number we should be able to make life difficult for these scamming scum?

Asked for a name I have never heard of, when I asked who wanted to know, he hung up

Just another instant hang-up scammer.

Clearly would have been a crook, if they'd bothered to answer their own call.

several calls from this number...no-one  speaks.

I have just had this call and feel a little duped. He sounded very convincing. I was stupid enough to give him my date of birth, but stopped when he asked me to confirm my card number. He argued with me saying that I had a unique pin number so it could not be used. I argued that my card could easily be used online as you don't need the pin number. He then hung up. Just hoping I didn't give him enough ammo with my date of birth. Feel so stupid!

If you didn't give him your card number you will be okay. These scammers can be very convincing, so I wouldn't feel too bad about it. At least you ended the call before any real damage was done. Others haven't been so lucky. No doubt that the poster that calls himself 'John' will pop up later with some smart @rse comment about how stupid people deserve to be ripped off.................

Rang to say i was also owed an amount of money and i politly said "Oh it's okay you can keep it as i dont need it"and then i said "but thanks for calling anyway and have a nice day"

Funny thing is that they have never called back and i wonder why.

The above works very well indeed with anyone stating that you are owed money

Instant hang-up again, otherwise it would have been yet another scam-centre call from India.

as today my mobile phone was stolen which many personal numbers in the memory.
This phone number called onlt background noise - there could be a connection between the 2 incidents

If you read the other posts on here you will see that this is one of the many overseas scams using fake UK numbers.  It is the "refund of bank charges" scam where they ask for money by voucher or into a private UK bank account  before you can have your "refund".  Needless to sya, there is no refund.

Call from this number - Indian female knew my name and address advising I was owed some bank charges from UK Government asked me to verify my DOB. Clearly a con so I didn't confirm my DOB and she just hung up.

Really annoying. Hung up when answered.

01924 215367 Got the same call off a really hard to understand Asian man at 17:22pm today. He had my name and address and was trying to tell me he was from the Ministry of Finance(?!) and was reimbursing me for over payment of bank charges. I was getting on his nerves as I had to keep asking him to repeat himself. He mumbled how much the cheque was for and became irate when I asked him 3 times how much it was as I couldn't understand him. I guessed it was a scam and told him so. Googled the number and got this site. I too am TPS registered, so rather unhappy and worried where they got my details from.
