Mark this number on my mob and re-name as a SCAM - DO NOT ANSWER. And now everytime they'll try to call me, incoming caller name will be showing as a SCAM - DO NOT ANSWER. I don't have to deal with this stupid caller anymore, so i just laugh and enjoy the rest of my day...

Call today 9/10/11, at 11.45, this time from 02078 909051 - GfK.  As with all these unwanted calls, I just put the phone down and leave them talking until they ring off.  It really is time the public received some protection from these nuisances.

They phoned me up saying they were phoning on behalf of the Office Of Fair Trading and they were doing research on Credit/Debit Card! I wonder what the OFT would make of this?

I obviously didn't give these researchers the time of day let alone details for their survey. I'm TPS registered so I'm sure the Information Commissioner would like to know about these people!

If you have been overseas in the last 12 months & have been ripped off by a credit card company the OFT would have been interested - ditto if everything was hunky dory.

If you have been ripped off and you haven't bothered to express an opinion, then how would OFT know.

It is amusing to see that some people take the time to express an opinion here, but do not where it might do some good !!

As a former employee who does not want to give their name I would just like to clear something up. If it has been mentioned before I am sorry for the duplication.

GFK NOP are a market research company who do surveys for various companies like Barclays, BT and others. They are a genuine market research company and you can visit www.gfknop.com for more information.

If you are contacted by them and the caller asks to speak to Mr. John Smith, and you are Mrs. Smith or another relative and ask who it is, the caller can tell you their name and usually say it is a customer feedback survey.

Usually, Mrs. Smith would ask "who is it for", the caller is not able to say Barclays Bank due to the Data Protection Act because Mr. John Smith may not want Mrs. Smith to know that he has an account with Barclays.

As far as the callers are concerned, they are not allowed to reveal it is Barclays unless it is the named person, because of data protection, even if Mrs. Smith has been married to him for 40 years etc. I know it is very unlikely that Mrs. Smith is kept in the dark, but GFK NOP cannot take that risk.

In the Barclays survey, there are no personal details asked, just merely questions about a visit made to the branch on a specific date and satisfaction questions about that or a phone call made to Telephone Banking.

Other surveys, the caller may be able to reveal the client to anyone that picks up the phone, for example, a survey about Aviva.

If you received a phone call to your mobile or a call to your landline has diverted to a mobile, the only reason a mobile number shows up is because you have received the call on a mobile phone number, and somehow the call works out cheaper with a mobile number from GFK NOP's side, but the call is still actually from a landline. If you ring the mobile number back, I believe it gives all the relevant information.

No survey asks for details such as account numbers, sort codes etc. Some surveys ask for the occupation of the Chief Income Earner so they can be put in the right social grade but this can be refused.

Some surveys also ask for total household income, again to fit into a category, but this can also be refused.

TPS doesn't cover market research but the callers should be (and normally are) polite and respect people's right to decline. On weekdays, the shift ends at 9pm, so please do not be alarmed if you get a call at 20:30 asking to do a survey about Barclays or someone else.

Unfortunately some callers may be rude, but on the whole from my experience of when I was working there, most people were very polite and respectful.

Please do copy and paste this for future reference when this gets lost in all the replies.

I hope this helps. And I hope you're happy to do a survey!

Received a call this morning (Sunday) asking me for a few minutes to complete a survey on banking etc

I asked how they had my number and was told it's random numbering or something to that effect.
I told the chap (politely) to remove my number from their database and to never call again.....We'll see

I have received a call this morning claiming to be from GFK Market research on behalf of Lloyds TSB. I had an initial conversation with them, but when they said that I will be paid £60 for the participation in the research I decided to call LLoyds TSB to check. The assistant in Lloyds TSB was not aware of any research conducted on their behalf and suggested that if I do get a call from GFK Market Research again to get their telephone number and then report it to Lloyds. It may need to be investigated. I am now really frightened that I have spoken to these people and gave them some information, but of a general, not personal nature. If someone has been in this situation please tell me what is best to do??? Thanks

Have been calling me too. I automatically let the answer machine get the call, of course it rings off and no message left because its all automated.  You answer, you may get to talk to someone.  Companies know what sells and what doesn't, surely sales figures indicate that.  If someone is passionate about a product, how good or how bad it is, then if they want to, they can tell the company.  If there is problem with a product, that will filter back to the company and based on the volume of possible reoccurring notifications of  the same problem will depend on weather or not a product needs to be improved.  I have had a scan back through what people have said about these callers and all that have spoken to someone.  They may come in as surveys and have some of your personal details, but in the end they are only after one thing.....for you the consumer to switch to another brand or company.  If these companies stopped employing the call centres to do this and instead used genuine feedback from their existing customers if their customers felt so inclined, the companies products and client base should increase through quality of the product.  What about all the money that is wasted on these call centres by the companies.  Why get a person that has no knowledge of a brand effectively sell it when these companies could rely on reliable feedback that will be genuine passed on from time to time by the consumer.  How the 'surveyors' get your details is by now irrelevant as in simple terms they have, like it or not.  The less people that entertain the survey companies, than the less productive they will become for the companies that employ them....in turn the companies should see what a waste of money it will have been for their company.  SO DON'T ANSWER THE CALL....YOU DON'T KNOW THE NUMBER......AS SOMEONE SAID IN HERE..IF ITS SO IMPORTANT LEAVE A MESSAGE....AT LEAST THEN WE THE CONSUMER CAN DECIDE FOR OURSELVES....WE ARE NOT THICK....WE CAN RESEARCH COMPANIES AND THEIR PRODUCTS OURSELVES.  Whoever came up with the idea to randomly phone people to get a sale was only motivated by greed and that is all that these calls are ultimately about.

I've just had a bizarre conversation with an English lady on this number 02078909051 @ 19:45 on behalf of "Barclays Bank" 5 mins survey she says.
She asked were you at the Ealing Branch on Friday 28/09/2011 pm asked her what was it regarding and she did not give me an answer (I was getting suspicious) nope therefore ask my partner and she did in the morning.
Lady then said that survey stops here cos it was not me on the above location, weird phone call hence I’ve put this on here.
The key is not to encourage them by participating in their surveys!

    Good luck…:)

I recieved a call this evening from 02078909051 representing Barclays Bank.  Telling me I was in my branch in Kelso yesterday,  who gives my bank the authority to pass on any information as to where I go or what I do.  If I was elderly or on my own I would not only be angry but afraid that I was
being watched.  No salescalls should be allowed to private numbers they should stick to the streets
    for market research.

Had a call from 02078909051at 13:32 today, from somebody doing a survey 'on random subjects'.

From my log of unwanted caller numbers, this is the same, except for the last digit, as a number 02078909052 that called me last year, owned by GFK NOP a market research company (see the entry above logged by Matt on 8 Sep 2011).

I said I don't like getting unsolicited calls and please don't call me again, then ended the call without further discussion.
