This caller has called and didin't actually manage to catch us in! But we've had calls from various cold calling companies. Maybe the best thing to do is to hang up or if you speak to someone start to speak a foreign language if you can learn a few phrases they will leave you alone. Worked for me. If you don't answer they'll keep ringing till they get you but once they aren't getting anywhere they'll delete your number from their junk calling list.

Had a call this morning from 02078909051, they are GfK NOP, Ludgate House, 245 Blackfriars Road, London SE1 9UL Telephone - 020 7890 9000.  They are a market research company and a very annoying one at that.  The person asked if he could ask a few questions but I said no thank you (being the polite person that I am) then the line went dead.  What an absolute appalling manner in which the call was ended, the least he could have done was say thank you for wasting my time.  I am so annoyed that I will make a formal complaint to OFCOM and I will request the Information Commissioner’s Office to enforce the fact that I do not want these type of calls as I have signed up to the Telephone Preference Service.  I hope that in the event this company do not comply with my wishes they are fined the maximum amount possible under the legislation.  I understand this is a £5000 Fine if they don’t comply with the legislation.

The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a central opt out register whereby individuals can register their wish not to receive unsolicited sales and marketing telephone calls. It is a legal requirement that companies do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS.

The original legislation was introduced in May 1999. It has subsequently been updated and now the relevant legislation is the Privacy and Electronic (EC Directive) Regulations 2003.

Just received a call (1430 hrs Sunday)from a young woman asking for me by my full 3 Christian names and my surname. The 02078909051 number was displayed. I am ex directory so was curious to know who it was calling. She said 'GFK NOP Market research',and asked if I was the person she had asked for. I asked what was it about, to which she replied she could only tell the person she had asked for....and was that me? I again said that depends on what it's about?
...........She put the phone straight down!!
Hope she's not paid by results! Back to the Sunday dinner.

The answerphone took the call and they hung up.

It is advisable to allow ALL calls to be answered this way.  Genuine callers will speak to the machine.  Timewasters don't bother;  makes my day when I know they or their machinery is wasting its time and financial resources.

I now advise cold callers, callers from India, China etc that they are in breach of the law and incurring a legal liability which can result in the caller being prosecuted personally for harrasment. That the calls to my number are monitored and tracing action is in hand . . . They've usually rung off by the time I get this far and I don't get anymore calls - well, not from them anyway.
I suggest read up on the law, get a spiel ready and when your satisfied it's justified, simply read it out. Seems to work for me.  Also, register all your phones with TPS and complain about every nuisance call to Ofcom.
I have now reported 02078909051 to Ofcom for several recent silent calls. The more of us that do will cause Ofcom to act.  Hopefully, they will close GFK NOP and MCI WorldCom Ltd down permanently.

I have just received a call from this company, who then hung up when I answered. Which was annoying.

I actually worked for this company for several years [possibly why the number seemed familiar!]. While these calls are annoying, those who have expressed concern about being questioned about their banks should not worry. As previous posters have stated, they have to abide by codes of conduct, and would never ask you for any details about bank accounts etc because they are not allowed to by law. All they are likely to do is ask which bank you use in order to see whether you fit into the category of people they wish to speak to [eg if they want to talk to people who bank with Nat West, they will obviously discount Barclay's customers]

So relax, they are not a bunch of cowboys or anything, they are one of the biggest market research companies in the World. They are not trying to flog you anything, and you can just tell them if you don't want to talk to them. And be nice to the people calling you - I knew a lot of peope who did this, and it is a thankless job, made worse by people being rude!

    Former GfK NOP (LutonTIS)

This is a post I made in response to malicious posts against the Luton TIS.

GfK NOP Are a genuine market research company!
This is how to deal with a market research company such as GfK NOP.

    1).  Be polite.  Stay calm.

2).  Ex-Directory.  Some surveys use random digit dialing. This is standard amongst market research as well as direct marketing companies.  Your number was dialed at random.  Try asking the interviewer about this.  They will explain.

3).  Asking for you by name.  Your name and number were provided by a company whom you already deal with.  In this instance and for data protection reasons, the interviewer can only speak to the named respondent.  They cannot speak to a spouse or partner.  They cannot give any information to a spouse or partner.  This includes telling you whom the survey is on behalf of.

4).  All surveys are voluntary and are conducted at your convenience.  It would be very kind of you to take part.  If you would not like to take part immediately, then ask them to call back at a certain time and date.  If they don't already know your name then your first name will be sufficient.

5).  If for some reason, you do not wish to take part.  Politely tell the interviewer that you do not wish to take part in the survey.  Politely ask them not to call again and you will be removed from the database.  Hanging up will result in a follow-up call.  This is known as a soft call back.  You will continue to get these, if you hang up.

6).  Silent calls.  These are caused by a predictive dialer.  The computer dials numbers, but if there are insufficient interviewers to conduct interviews.  Then the call is abandoned.  There are regulations about how many abandoned calls a call center can produce.

7).  Anonymity.  Some companies ask for surveys to be done anonymously.  Let me assure you that your details will also remain anonymous.  They receive the details of the survey in the form of statistical analysis. If your details are to be passed back then your permission will be sought by the interviewer.  There are times that GfK will ask to keep your details to conduct a follow-up interview.  Some projects are on-going.  Again, your details will not be given to the client.

8).  TPS.  The Telephone Preference Service prevents unsolicited sales and marketing calls.  GfK NOP are not selling or marketing anything and are therefore exempt from screening against the TPS register.  If the number that GfK NOP are contacting you on is TPS registered then politely tell them so.  They will point out the above statement.  You must tell them that you do not wish to participate, as per section 5.

If you complain about Market research companies calling you.  Then don't complain that your mobile phone company doesn't know what you want.  Or that your bank doesn't listen to you.
