    Former MORI worker
    Hi,
You really have nothing to fear from Ipsos MORI. I used to work for them as a telephone researcher. The company conducts surveys for a wide variety of companies including newspapers, the BBC, councils, the government, banks etc. It's to find out what the public think about certain topics. Have you ever seen on the news: xxx percent of the UK population don't support the government's policy on xxx? Well, this is how such information is obtained.

Ipsos MORI use randomly generated numbers, which is allowed because they don't sell anything, nor do they sell on numbers or indeed buy numbers - sometimes numbers are provided by a bank, for example, who wish to survey their customers.

Yes, it can be annoying to be called - but it's not a scam. Ipsos MORI is a well respected international research company. Also, don't shout at the poor guys and gals makng a living on the other end of the phone - they don't control which numbers are dialed!

Also, there's no point banging on about what they do is illegal or they've done something illegal by calling you on a certain day at a certain time.

MORI knows the law better than you do and certainly does not break it.

    Former MORI worker,
For me illegality isn't the point, it's just that unsolicited calls are flippin annoying!
A very patronising attitude, I'll be avoiding your polls in future.

I was called from this number for the first time today.

The caller company is Ipsos MORI, a legitimate and reputable market research company -- which does not alter the fact that calls from them are an irritation, however. And it is unfortunately true that while the Telephone Preference Service and the Privacy & Electronic Communications Regulations apply to unsolicited sales & marketing calls, they do NOT apply to legitimate market research. That's a weakness of the regulations, in my view, but MORI isn't doing anything illegal. To get them to stop bothering you, read this page on their web site: http://www.ipsos-mori.com/have-we-contacted-you-by-telephone.ashx

    its time to have fun!

i have received a call from these people today (sun mar 22nd 09)

i unfortunately was sleeping to answer, but when they do call back i will be giving them bogus funny names such as...

    Dwayne Pipe (drain pipe)
    Ben Dover (bend over)
    Justin Time (just in time)
    Ilene Dover (i leaned over)

and would entirely make an amusement from their call.

another way to wind them up, is that when they call you and ask for your details, you ask for theirs first. e.g

they call and ask my name.. i reply by asking the callers name. when they tell me their name, i reply saying that i have the same name. and so on.

the best way to wind these people up is to act genuine, but sly.

    Dave,

What's the point of that? Really? You're just wasting your own time and the person on the other end of the phone doesn't actually care that much anyway. Why don't you just say you're not interested, thank you and goodbye?

What a useful website! I have been constantly getting these calls and have never once picked up (purely because if it was important.... an answerphone message would be left!) I typed the number into google and up comes this website which answers all my questions!!

    Thanks very much! Sophie

Reading the 'Former Mori Worker's posts.

Im not buying that its 'randomly generated' if I, like many others posting about this number, have been called on numerous occasions.

Wonder how they get an unlisted number; and for what purpose. Been plagued by this same 02088618682 number, quite a few times this evening. Random calling I can understand, but repeat calling is surely too deliberate. Fortunately I found this website while trying to find out the location of this national number. The location for 0208 is London Outer Area.
