It is very legit, and most people on here seem to have got it for not paying tax on a car etc.

if you sell your car it's YOUR respoinsiblity to tell the DVLA

    Which involves ONE letter.

This is not a scam. My son received a similar demand. It did not specify what it related to e.g. Car Reg ,when offence occurred or where .It requested that he either post a cheque to their Post Box or phone through his credit card details and was printed on cheap reddish coloured paper To all intents this appeared to be a scam so he ignored it. Who in their right mind posts of a cheque to a post box or gives their credit card details.under such circumstances. He is now living in Scotland but just over 2 years ago was living in the north of England and sold his car back then through Auto Trader. it would appear DVLA never received any notice of a change of ownership and now he is faced with an incresed fine which if not paid within 2 weeks a warrant will be issued for his arrest with a further threat of sa spell in HMP so beware !

Felt I had to post this as the thread was really useful for us...

This is GENUINE.  My boyfriend got a text from "HMCTS" today asking to call this number as he had an outstanding fine.  I originally read every single post here and as he doesn't own a car, or indeed a license, decided it was a scam.  He called the number however and just didn't say anything when it asked for details.  After the automated line asked for his details three times, he got put through to an actual person who gave him all the info of the fine.  Turns out in our case that it seems someone has given his details fraudulently and we'll have to sort it out. But maybe try this if you're unsure and hold the line until you're put through to someone that you can actually talk to.   Not saying that all instances are genuine as the letters do sound a bit questionable. But it could be worth checking...

This is 100% legit and not a scam.

    I received the same letter.

It related to a speeding fine from 2007 and apparently I didn't pay the £210 owed.

I didn't receive the letters, as I'd moved address.

The courts have recently migrated to new systems and are slowly contacting everyone in regards to unpaid fines.

I rang the 01452 number from the letter and got straight through to a very helpful lady. She knew exactly what the fine related to and knew all my past addresses.

    You have two options:

    - pay the fine in full or set up a payment plan (you can pay over 6 months)

    - make a court appearance and plead your case i.e. you didn't receive the letters and had no idea about the fine (I don't recommned going down this route if you still lived at the address where the fine letters were sent to)  Additional fees will be incurred if the court rules against you.

I've moved address three times since the fine was issued. I received a letter to my current address on Saturday, proving they will track you down. I live with my partner who works from home. The last thing I wanted was for the bailiffs (next course of action) to knock on the door when I'm not at home.

We all know how rude and forceful these guys can be.

I agree that the quality of the letters is woeful, but ring the landline number and sort ot out.

I thought about ignoring the letter but glad I made the call.

I'll leave it with you but please remember, the delay is due to migration and this is not a scam.

100,000's owe fines - hence the delay in reaching everyone.

Scams are carried out via the net, not via post.

Got a reminder for £45.It said I could pay through an automated payment system over the phone between 8.30 and 4.30 Mon to Friday.Did not know automated systems go home after 4.30.If its not a scam then I want to have my day in court. If a bailiff does turn up,do not let  them in or give any details.
I did go to my local police station but its Friday and he wanted to go home.crime stops in Basingstoke at 3.30 pm and starts on Monday at 10am.

I got a letter this morning with this number on,it was an arrest warning, due to owing £50 and not stating what for.
All details of the courts are legit according to web searches, but something is giving me a gut feeling this is not 100% genuine.
The 'badge' is of extreme poor quality, and there is no official stamp on the letter.
This is obviously a small claims,as under £5000,and if courts send you a genuine claims on someones behalf, there should be a letter with brief details an official court stamp on it,and forms to confirm you have recieved the letter to send back....well according to the Citizens Advice website anyway.
If there is no official stamp, its not official.
Well my partner called the number as he is sure its genuine...took about 20 mins before a human answered, and it is supposed to be for using a TV without a license, from 2011,when someone turned up on my doorstep of somewhere I have not lived at for nearly 2 yrs. I know I paid that fine at the time, and my partner said we cannot pay until he gets paid in couple wks time, which was fine....BUT as the warrant has already been issued it cannot be withdrawn! But she doubts that anyone will turn up to arrest me before payday.
I feel stuck in the middle somewhere of knowing if its genuine,as my partner so insistant it is..and my gut feeling its not 100% genuine!
I know its not a massive amount, but when you have 2 young children to feed and clothe and your money is going on all the bills etc,£50 is enough to eat into your pocket to set you back somewhat...esp if this is a scam and one my partner believes is real!

I had the same experience as Clare, more or less.

Received a text message one morning, demanding a payment of a late fine. I went to the DVLA first, to confirm no issues with my car or drivers licence. I then phoned the 0300 790 9901 number, (which based on my looking on the internet, I felt was a genuine number).

When asked as part of that call, I put in the 3 digit area code that was included in my HMCTS text message. The machine then told me the code was for Cheshire. I then looked up the Cheshire Courts number on the internet: https://www.gov.uk/pay-court-fine-online.  After waiting around 30 minutes for the "Fine" option, I got through to someone, who confirmed that the fine was not actually for me, and that the text had been sent to me by mistake.

From the internet, it would seem the HMCTS texts can be sent by mistake, (error in given or recorded mobile number). The letters though, are perhaps part of a scam, since they involve telephone numbers which cannot be traced back to Gov. Depts.
