- Dave| 1 replyReceived a letter from HMRC historic claims team, claiming I owed money from an outstanding fine which I was completely aware of. The letter does not state what the fine was for simply states that I owe £272.00 odd pounds my case was apparently heard in court back in 2011
Thinking it was a scam I ignored the letter, (it is a really poor letter, the letter head isn't on the page properly, the general quality of the letter and lack of information etc) about 10 days later I received a similar follow up letter stating that as I ignored the initial one HMRC will be taking further action...I rang the number from the newer letter and spoke to a lady who told me the fine relates to a tram ticket fine issued in 2011, which rings true....they sent correspondence to my previous address (which she had down correctly) prior to going to court....still wasn't 100% convinced tbh. I entered the telephone no into google and it took me directly to Gov.UK website for outstanding fines..(havin worked for gov.uk I knew that the website was legit)
LONG STORY A LITTLE SHORTER THIS IS NOT A SCAM ITS JUST BEEN POORLY EXECUTED....I would not advise ignoring the letter. I was advised to contact my local magistrates court and apply for a statutory declaration which essentially gives you the opportunity to appeal / contest whatever the fine is for....for me I was unaware that I had this fine and am taking it up with them outside of the timeframe as I do not believe I should pay the court costs of nearly £300 for a fine that if legitimate should have been £20.00!!
ignoring could prove to be costly!!- Caller: HMCT

- N P replies to DaveHI Dave ,
I am in same situation as you are now. But the only difference is i am may be a victim of identity theft.Someone else traveled without ticket and they issued ticket against me.
I have taken an appointment on the first week of January at court for a statutory declaration as i was not aware of the situation. .But not sure whether they will consider my case for a possible reopen. - Istvan| 1 replyHello,
I received the same or similar "demand for payment threat" as well from 'National Compliance and Enforcement Service - Historic Debt Team as others.
I agree with other on this looks really shady. If it is not a scam this is really silly from the gov. how they try to disguise it like it was.
Anyway, Many people mentioned that 03007909901 number is genuine. Yes it is, because it is a gov.uk automated payment service number. However, this does not mean it is not a scam. Since there are two phone numbers are present in the letter for contact, perhaps the scam operate on the premises that, people first call the genuine number where they will not get any further information, as it is an automated phone service, then they go and call the scammers number (second phone number) where the scammers are happy to take your payment and your credit card records.
So, I do not know if this is a scam or not however, I will not pay a penny until I know for what and have seen the evidence.
If they have managed to send me this letter, surely they could have sent me a court notice or something. I have lived at the same address for 10 years I always get the fines, with a photographic evidence enclosed, when I overstay in the Sainsburys or Lidl car park, usually within 2 weeks. Now they were unable to locate me? Come on...
If it smells like a bull It probably is a bull...
Good Day Guys.

- DiskoGuys, - a guide how to test your letters.. Some people I'm sure will get official fine letters so you need to check yours to be sure. Google the official .gov.uk/pay court fine site and from there try to pay £5 using a fake email address. It fails before you give any credit card details because the account number you have on your letter is fake. It hopes people will then call the number on the orange backing sheet. This number is not a listed as a .gov. contact number and will be the scammers. If your account number is recognized by the site then you have a fine to pay. What is wrong with people - total scumbags. Please report this to your local Police station as I have done - they are aware of the scam in most cases.

- E replies to THi
I also received a letter saying that I still have an outstanding balance on the above account which was imposed at Feltham Magistrates Court on 12.12.2012.
The telephone numbers on the letter to contact is: 03007909901 which is very similar to the original court's phone and 03001239252. I received two letters, the first one says that the amount was £225.00 and the second letters says it was £202.00 which is kind of weird so I am pretty sure it is a span. - William TuttI can assure you this is a real number. As said on the first page, if you go directly onto the government website then the number is on there exactly as it is here. Sorry to say, if you got told you owe money then you probably do.
