- jh| 2 replies3 July 7.30 pm. My landline rang & I could see it was a mobile number. Didn't pick up as not convenient and never answer if not know the number. Some mad sounding woman started gabbling on about god and religious things.I wasn't really listening. It went on for ages and seemed to be asking me to pass the message on to others, like a chain message.
I didn't pick up. It's on the answermachine.
1471 gave me the same ranting message, abbreviated asking me to pass it on and to call 07953 96606 to listen to the message again or for more info.
No way.
1471 usually gives you the time of the call and the number but the 1471 message was as above so you are subjected to the ranting twice.
Was furious. I don't know whether the number above was the number which called me. But it was definitely a mobile number which called. - jh replies to jh| 1 replyJust checked my call list . The call was from 07953 966066.
- jh replies to jhJust found this which confirms the scam bit and how to block.

- CharlesThese people should be locked up. They haven't even got the decency to do a face to face scam, instead they hide behind a mobile number.
Stay alert. My simple rule is anyone calling you dont know is a scam. Sadly you have to think like that nowadays. - James| 1 replyIn my case, this was NOT a scam.
Instead, it was a friend of mine, who had mistakenly sent a text to my landline instead of my mobile. She uses the T-Mobile network, which is one of the two networks that makes use of the "Virgin Media Text Store" service, which uses this number (07953 966066) to call landlines with text messages converted to an automated voice. (See here for more details: http://help.virginmedia.com/system/viewArticl ... FE-CD16ED8F9644)
Of course I had no idea what it was until I did my research. Since most Google results (including that for this page) suggest it's a scam number, I was distinctly worried, considering the text message I'd received was, "Hi, James. How are you?" So immediately I'm thinking, "What scammer not only knows my landline number, but also my first name?!" ... not good. Only after digging deeper did I work out the true source. Although, as I didn't pick up the phone to receive the message, it went through to voicemail; and as these automated messages always start before the tone, what I heard began halfway through the message, starting with only the last 4 digits of the actual number used to text me. I had to use those 4 digits to scan through my "phone book" and see they matched anyone I knew ... and fortunately it matched the mobile number of one of my friends. So that was a relief.
Equally fortunately, because it WAS a voicemail, I didn't have to call the number (07953 966066) back to hear the message again - I could just repeat it through my voicemail. But that really is poor, to charge at mobile rates to hear a message someone else has sent you - no wonder people assume it's a scam. The BT version (also mentioned on the page I linked to earlier) only charges at a far more reasonable local rate.
Perhaps the other reason it's so commonly thought of as a scam is not because the service itself is dodgy, but because some people that use it are scammers.
But, to reiterate, in my case, it wasn't a scam.- Caller: Virgin Media Text Store

- sheila replies to Jamesjust had message left from this number,it was NOT a Scam,it was my sister wrongly sending text to my land line, though you cannot understand the message, sounds like a chinese person with very bad english.
- TikkasHi this is a mobile to landline text message service. On the original message it should tell you in auto speech the number that sent you the original text !
- Caller: T mobile/ virgin media

- RosieThis is NOT a scam. It's Virgin's text to landline service. When I got this number coming through I didn't answer and let it go to voicemail as I didn't recognise it on my home phone. On 1571 it was only half a message because it's automated but I called the number back (after some research and checking here and it looked unlikely to be a scam) and it was indeed my dad texting me at home.

- lollipop| 1 replyGot called today from 07953 966066 with a text message asking me to call 07786 053958, which of course I haven't. I have now registered with the Telephone Preference Service, www.tpsonline.org.uk or 0845 070 0707, who, after you have registered, will barr all unwanted calls free of charge, indefinitely. You have to wait 28 days for the service to come into effect. My neighbour told me about this service and they don't receive any cold callers of spam calls at all. Once you have registered, the service has no expiry date and will be effective until you stop it. Hope this helps.
- markThis is deffinately a text message service. If I send a text message from my mobile to our landline number, 07953 966066 appears as the identifying call source.
I imagine that whoever sends the messages that make no sense , or are rude or threatening, or offering some sort of financial gain simply buy your landline and mobile numbers off organisations that you have supplied your numbers to as contact information. This is a very lucrative market for such people.
Ever been to a restaurent and the receipt says "register your details to win £1000 daily". How do you think they fund such prizes? By selling your info to marketing companies that then sell on that info.
Simple tip, when asked for - and if you choose to offer it - personal info that 's not relevent or necessary to the service supplied, give birthdays, addresses telephone number etc with at least one significant number different, - Jossthey phoned at 6.45 am on the landline and left a message saying call back urgently. i didn't. i assume it would have cost a fortune.
- ArnieGot a call from this number as some sent me a text message saying "grow up"
- wooster replies to lollipopTPS do not bar calls, I have had my number registered with TPS for a number of years and still get a load of parasites trying their luck on a regular basis. Your neighbours are extreemly lucky to receive no calls. The way to go is to get as much information as you can about the caller and go to the TPS site where there is an option to report callers who call after registration.
- Zoa| 1 replyI had a call from 07953966066 on my landline today, but as I didn't recognise the number I didn't answer it. They did however leave a message asking me to call Scotcall 'regarding my account' (which I don't have). But what confused me was that it repeats the message twice. First time saying I need to call Scotcall on 08442578537 with ref. 457*****, then repeats, saying it's a text from 07852408933 again telling me to call the 0844 number and to speak to the person I should call 07953966066.
Having a mooch to see what I could find, apparently Scotcall aren't very nice people to deal with, but since I have no business with them I'm not really concerned. But it's odd that people have had different messages from 07953966066.- Caller: 07953966066
