Had a call from this number today - they asked to speak to me - said speaking then they just decided to chat in the background, I'm at work so only take quick personal calls - very frustrating!

    Rather not say, thanks!
    Hi everyone,

I work in the contact center and  telecommunications industry (don't shoot me - I am just the messenger!)

I also got a call from this number, today.  As you might expect, I also told them to STOP and GO AWAY.  Then I looked up the number and was lead here...   have to say that this is a very ill-thought-out strategy by Barclay's.  Everyone is (quite correctly) being made aware of potential scammers on the phone and their OWN STAFF are emulating the same behavior!  Want to stop it?  Go to your Barclay's Account on-line, look up your marketing preferences and "switch off" telephone contacts or update your mobile number to a "dud"...

I also suspect I know why the calls are being placed... read on if you are interested....

If you have a lot of staff in contact centers and things get quiet on "Inbound Calls", most Contact Centers use the same staff to make Outbound Calls, to a pre-defined dialing list.  Obviously, in this case it is Barclay's own customers they are calling.  BUT... unless you are (and I say this in all honesty) quite gullible, the likelihood of them getting through the ID&V (identification & Verification) process with you is slim...

It's a pretty futile way of expending resources when there is just not enough work to go around - and, on the very odd occasion, they might actually get some sort of "sale" out of it.  But I suspect the "success rate" is less than 1%... Really badly though out, Barclay's - there are other ways to connect with your customers in real-time, other than Cold Calling them!

    You're Welcome, by the way..!

I have just validated this number on Barclays website and it is genuine, as in not a scam. Admittedly, it's a bit daft of Barclays to warn their customers about giving personal details over the phone  unless the customer initiated the call only to cold call them from this number and ask for their personal details!

    Scam number!

Just received a similar call asking me to clear security so that they could tell me about a new feature of the Barclays app. I just spoke with Barclays and they said that the number doesn't belong to them and not to give any details like that over the phone. They also added that: Barclays never sends such emails or make calls to informing you about any activity on your account or to introduce the new features.

As I explained in my post just above yours (!), I validated this number using Barclays online number check facility and it is definitely one of theirs. You might like to take this up with whoever you spoke to at Barclays and ask them why they are misleading you. Your Barclays contact asserts that Barclays never make calls "introducing new features". Well, that is exactly what this number is all about although they prefer the phrase "general product developments". You can opt out of receiving these calls, by the way. Scam number? No.

Take your point Canard, but there is a problem.  The Police and the Banks are telling people not to give information to anyone calling saying they are from "your Bank".  Their advice is to hang up the 'phone and then unplug it.  Leave it unpligged for at least 10 minutes then 'phone your bank on a number you know to be genuine.  Apparently the scammers have learned to spoof genuine Bank 'phone numbers, something wghich they have been doing in the US for a few years.  What really makes me angry is that, despite doing this the Banks still 'phone us and ask for information.  You rally couldn't make it up!

I received a call from this number today saying it's Barclays and they have some updates they have to give me about the mobile banking app. They asked me to verify my DOB and I asked why they needed to verify my details to give me general information about the app. Then the lady said Ok, to prove we are legitimate I will give you your bank account number and you can choose two digits from your sort code and if they are correct will you then believe it is Barclays calling?! Who does that in a professional organisation?! Anyhow, I said yes to the details she gave me (without checking it was actually correct) and as she proceeded to ask me my DOB again I hung up!

Don't think I want to know about these updates. Don't know if it's legitimate or a scam, but I would rather be safe than sorry.

On the basis of the reporting above I think I will report this to the fraud unit. Thank you all for sharing your experiences.

Just had a phone call from this number claiming to be Barclays.  Asked me to identify myself, but could not identify them self at all, apart from they could give me my long card number, sortcode and account, which obviously they could have if they had a picture of my card, from a skimmer.  They offered NO way of proving who they were.  They just told me to google the number to prove it was a Barclays number, and ended up here.

    Spoke to Barclays directly myself:

    On the phone number: 0345 734 5345

And they confirmed this was NOT a barclays number.  ALL Barclays calls can be identified using the PINsentry device, which the 0800 number refused to use.

Go to your Barclays on-line account and update your contact preference - remove your telephone numbers from their system or, if you can't, update them to bogus numbers.

As previous reports. Refused to tell me what the fabulous new service was unless I gave personal details, they already know my name and credit card number - both of which every merchant I've ever bought from has on file. Think of the call as "I'm from ISIS, we'd like to use your account to fund terrorism" and act accordingly. I checked with Barclay's fraud section. Number is similar to but NOT one of theirs.

This is a FRAUDULENT phone call. They claim to be ringing from barclays and need to confirm your details in order to speak to you about the mobile banking app... NO CHANCE! I have spoken to barlcays myself (using their number on their website) and they can confirm it was not them and do not need that information to market the mobile banking app. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION!

Had this number call me earlier today, didn't answer as I don't answer 0800 numbers, when the call went through to my voicemail (don't think they realised), background sounded very noisy and music playing, don't somehow think Barclays genuinely sound like that if they call their customers, I shall avoid this number from now.
