It is BT as we are trying to bring our home phone number from our old house to our new house and they are trying to sort this and call us back on this number.

    It's Me!
Definitely BT, we have had a fault with our line at work and they called me back on my mobile to try to sort it out.

I am surprised how paranoid some of you guys are, yes we all know that some unrepeatable companies do exist, however this IS a BT number, it has been confirmed to me by BT CEO's office in London, let me explain and hopefully stop some of the fright and panic developers on here, firstly elderly and disabled people often rely on the telephone and these "unknown callers" do worry them without people on here starting a panic.

Why do BT use a generic number, often these calls are engineering or account based, because of the data protection laws in the UK the can only speak to the "account holder" so being answered by a "machine" leaves them in a difficult position, they cannot leave information about why they are calling as if the "account holder" is not the only person picking up messages (as here) they may be considered as breaching privacy laws, so by using this "common number" for everything and not leaving a message they are protecting you and themselves.

Engineers use mobile telephones, they are obviously "on the road" so if they left the number ( which are sometimes pool phones) you may not get the person that originated the call, engineers in the middle of a job in a customers home and getting constant calls on his mobile frustrates him and the customer whose home (or office) he (or she) maybe working in hence by calling the number it clarifies it was BT and should alleviate the worry, they will call again if they need to speak to you!

One final note, in the UK we have multiple ethnic people, English, Irish, Scot, French, Jamaican, Spanish, Indian and Asian, many have lived and worked here often born here, so making and assumption that because a person speaks with an Asian (or other) voice does not mean they work in a call centre in India, they may be an engineer who is going to visit you later and calling to confirm the appointment.

Yes we are right to be cautious but being paranoid and speeding panic that every unknown caller is a criminal or an Indian Sales Centre is wrong on so may counts - I had to have my say.

Yes, same thing happened to me, but from my home phone, it sounded like a call centre and they were 'confirming details in case of any future 999 calls' got suspicious and rang BT.  BT confirmed no one from BT had called and then they had to have all my details and logged it as a nuisance call from BT!  The lady at the BT call centre wasn't exactly conversant with English.  So you can report it to BT service 08000800150 and they will tell you they didn't call you.  Not much help.

This is a number BT use all the time.
In my case it was an automated call to me in request by me for a pin code to set up BT Smarttalk on my mobile. It just tells me what Pin to enter to verify.

Got a call from this number in response to an advert on gumtree. Noticed it was a 0800 number and checked it on here. Turns out it is a BT number so it appears that staff working at BT can use BTs phones to call out about personal stuff. The guy who phoned called himself Baba, spoke with a Indian accent and didnt show to an appointment made to view an item.

Got a call from this number in response to a gumtree advert placed. The caller had a Indian accent said his name was Baba.
He made a appointment  to view an item but didnt show. BT must allow their staff to make personal calls out I guess.

The severely disabled lady I work for got a call from this number at shortly after 6.30 am. They left a blank message, and there was the option to reply to the call, but she would have to pay. As she has a very ill daughter, she was almost panicking by the time she called me to check it, (she is unable to answer the phone independantly) and was going to pay to reply till I checked here (thinking the hospital was calling). Not pleased!

Got a call from this number and was left a voicemail.Turns out it was BT Fleet wanting to sort something out with my company car (our company has a contract with BT Fleet to carry out maintenance). When I rang back on the non 0800 number, the lady who responded had no idea that the number displayed was 0800 328 9393. It seems she has to leave a lot of voicemails......
