Calls at silly o clock in the early hours often five or six times within a minute or two of each other leaving a voice mail message each time saying it is a reverse charge call service and someone is trying to reach you. Possibly someone trying to scam you for the return call charges as they are pretty steep if you listen to the message...

This was an automated call from BT about an installation appointment next week.
Correct date and postcode was quoted, so I pressed 1 to confirm appointment.

I made a complaint to BT about a wrong billing. They make it difficult online (which I prefer because I am deaf) so I had to call them. Inevitably an Indian call centre answered. I was unhappy with the result of the call and eventually BT wrote back to correct the bill. I believe this 0800 number is used by BT for various purposes. I did not answer because they had already written and corrected their mistake

The caller, whose accent made understanding very difficult, said I owed an outstanding amount on the account I closed months ago. He was well informed and had what appeared to be my BT account number. He wanted payment on the spot. I said I wanted to check and, if the call was genuine, I would pay. He gave me an automated number to call to confirm that I had paid: 0870 240 5566. This also appears to be a scam. However, I checked my residual BT access and that account no longer exists. Therefore the whole thing is suspect.

yes, in this instance it was an automated message function & from BT - I have just signed up for their SmartTalk service and part of the installation and validation process requires a PIN that is sent to your (the line-payer's) registered BT landline, not the mobile to be used, to ensure no unauthorised use by a third party

This ridiculous 'service has gone on for years. Is there no ombudsman or woman who can do something? And can they really keep billing for all these wasted calls?
