Got call in May with German voice, and he hung up.
But today got called from same number, and it was a mate who works for BT. As others have noted, it seems to be a generic number used for BT staff to call outside their network.
But it's probably worth being aware it might be subject to misuse by persons unknown. Just be cautious giving any info.

    FYI....

    Dear M

Thank you for your e-mail dated 9/6/08 about marketing calls.

I am sorry to read that you have received unwanted marketing calls. I tried calling you to discuss this matter and I left a brief message to say that I had called. I have now removed you from our marketing lists as requested. I advise that you may receive one more call while our records are being updated.

If there is anything else I can do to assist you further please reply via email and I will be happy to assist you.

    Thank you for contacting BT.

    Yours sincerely,

    Mark Irvine

BT said to me that it is a registerd number to BT but did not know why i was called.
BT told me that if i wanted to stop cold calls to my number then i should register with a company called TPS which he was happy to do for me, if after
one month i get a cold call(double glazing, surveys, ect) to tell them i am with TPS. Then by law they have to remove your telephone number off their database.

I get called by this number several times a day, I just do 1471.  In the evenings I just unplug my phone, and definitely before going to bed as I've had the muppets call me in the early hours one time.  Drives me mad.  Can I blow a whistle down the line to them???

    ALL - Please read this.....
Unfortunately, this is how phones in most BT's offices are designed to operate. No matter whether it is a BT's callcenter or normal 9 to 5am office, they are all set with the same outgoing caller id display(CLID).
Next time you get a call from this number it is either:
    a) a call center staff trying to contact since you have/had one of BTs product or services
    b) an employee of BT trying to contact you (it could be even be your friend trying to ring you from their office line)
    Hope this clarifies.

I tried to ringing 150 and finding the nuisance calls option which just came up "There is a fault" message - nice...

Thanks to a poster above I used the link to make a complaint to BT above: http://bt.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/bt.cfg/php/enduser/cci/bt_contact.php

BT rang me back inside 20 minutes and told me I'd been removed from any further calls. They also confirmed that it was BT which I was surprised about as I was being called at least once a day by this number. I guess it's just marketing gone wrong for BT. Very annoying though...

So if you want it to stop just complain to BT!

I complained to BT about this number at 20.30 on 25th June 2008 and had a phone call again from this number I answered and there WAS someone at the other end unlike the previous 6-7 times.

The male talked about my complaint I made on the BT website and said it was a generic BT number for all BT phone calls made by BT. However I have had a block put on BT and other people ringing me so complain to BT and get it resolved !

In fact it took BT approx 20 mins to contact me from my e-mail complaint very fast very impressed

I work for BT in one of BT's London offices, but not anything to do with telephone sales, marketing, billing etc., in fact not customer-facing at all.  Whenever one of my colleagues at BT phones my mobile from a desk phone, this number appears.  It's very annoying for me too, as if I don't catch the call in time, I cannot ring the colleague back, and I've no idea which colleague it was.

I can confirm this is definitely BT.

I had a missed call from this number, and also had an email from BT to say they had tried to contact me at the exact same time as the missed call. They were trying to call in response to an enquiry I had made through their website.

Relax - this is the BT "presentation number" - the same number is given out when people call from any BT PBX, instead of the realgeographic number, apart from callcentres, where the number is in the 0800 085 XXXX range. It could just be your friend or cousin Gladys who work for BT, calling for a chat!

Of all organisations, BT should be better able to present a more informative set of CLI numbers. In particular, they should be seperating service calls (e.g. Reverse Charge, BT Line Test Facilities [17070] etc.) from telemarketing, billing, customer service or employee personal calls (even if they don't give out the caller's DDI). That's just the technical shortfall. The whole problem of telemarketing calls with nobody at the other end, at unreasonable times of the night, to TPS registered numbers etc. is another serious issue. But at least if you could distinguish the origin and nature of the call, you could selectively block the numbers.
