"Many businesses underestimate the importance of their call centres and pay lip service to the needs of staff," says Neville Upton, chief executive of The Listening Company, which develops contact strategies for clients using call centres."They put their call centres in godforsaken business parks and soulless buildings.They may put in fountains or paint the walls a different colour, but it's just an apology for locating the facilities in an unattractive place to begin with."
Siting call centres in areas of high unemployment is a worthy cause, says Upton, but he questions whether companies choose such areas because that is where they can find the best people to communicate with their customer base, or simply because they can appoint people on minimum wages and get government grants for creating jobs.
"If people are only going to work for you because there is no other work, and they are put into an environment that is not very nice to work in, you are not going to get the best from them.The decision on where you site a call centre should be taken by the marketing and sales director, whereas most of the time it is left to the finance director, who tries to cut costs."
The industry has been given a lift recently, with the launch of the first independent call centre training college (PM, March 30).The National Call Centre College is being hailed as a solution to the problem of mediocre training and poor staff conditions.

Teamwork is a key aspect of staff morale, says Upton."My ideal is to put call centres in the middle of conurbations, where there is access to shops, pubs, restaurants and bingo halls.One of the most important things in a call centre is teamwork.It is easier to provide staff with an environment that is enjoyable in an urban area, because on their breaks, they can go and do all the things they need to get done and they can mix socially.There is also a much better transport infrastructure so you can attract a wider variety of people."
Upton adds that this mix of people, which the industry increasingly values, may not be available in the depressed areas often targeted for call centre development.
A worrying trend for call centre workers is the interest some companies are showing in moving offshore to locate centres in countries like India, which offer English-speaking staff at low cost.Upton says: "Increasingly, because telecom costs are going down all the time, people are going to handle the low end of call centre work outside of the UK."- Caller: The Listening Company

- who knowsthey called me @12midday 16/12/09 and I did not answer as I don't with any number that I don't know. They called again @ 2.40pm again I did not answer. Do they not realise that people work and cannot take rubbish calls. It's bad enough with junk mail let alone be hassled by these calls. I have taken my number off the list so I will have to wait and see in 24hrs time!!!
