I am receiving at least two calls a day every day from this number on my mobile phone and around 2 to calls to my home phone. These calls vary from 0900 up until 2055 at night! When I pick up the call it is quite, if you wait for a few moments for the call to connect their end, you get someone with a strong American or Indian Accent. They try to get me to confirm personal details about my old HSBC account. When I question who they are and why they want my details they tell me they cannot confirm anything with me until they confirm who I am bearing in mind that it is them that have rung me!!

I have blocked this number now on my mobile phone and if I pick a call up at home and it is silent, I put the receiver back down.

If this is a genuine call from HSBC, their methods seriously need looking at. I for one will never have any future dealings with a company that uses harrasment techniques to contact their customers. What is wrong with a letter?

these people claim to be from HSBC but i think it is rude how they approach their customers and how they treat them. They constantly ring and ive even recorded up to 7-8 calls in a day! i have since opened a new account with natwest and had no problems with them, although my HSBC account remains open. i do online banking and have resulted to replacing my phone numbers with a line of noughts! Done the trick for nuisance calls on my mobile lets see if it works on the house Phone.

This number called me, claimed they were HSBC and wanted my DOB. When i wouldnt give it him and he got very aggressive and wouldn't give me a number to call them back on. He said it was a personal business matter and HAD to speak to me today. I told him to write to me.
I then decided to call HSBC to find out what it was about. To my disbelief they said no one there had contacted me. I gave him the number and he said it wasn't even a HSBC number. Very confused!
The number has now stopped ringing me.
I rang it back on two occasions, once to have an indian lady shout hello at me and another occasion thanking me for calling a business name i couldn't catch and their opening times ???? It now says HSBC bank when you call back.

this is a genuine hsbc number - we got a call from it today (only got number when 1471'd after call) because my wife used the card in canada when she was over visiting her family and they had blocked it (extremely irritating but understandable in terms of fraud prevention/unusual activity). they phoned us about it the next day (a sunday).

I think this must be a general number that their calls go through as they chap i spoke with gave us the number he said he was calling from - we got given a uk based number to phone back to at their fraud prevention dept - somewhere in barnsley I think (01226347012). If you call the 0800 no. it tells you HSBC tried to phone you.

I've seen elsewhere people sometimes say this number calls them telling them its M&S, HFC, etc - thats because HSBC 'own/fund' those cards.

This isn't unusual practice for a bank to call you in relation to suspicious account activity, as I know when using my barclaycard in australia I got a phone call from barclaycard along similar lines asking me if i was abroad.

I can see how it's a little suspicious that they phone you up and ask for details although I have to say the chap that phoned me stated why he was phoning ('unusual activity on my account')- he was calling from HSBC fraud detection dept - I knew the missus' card had been blocked the day before when away in canada so knew what'd be about.

This IS a genuine HSBC number. The wife phoned the number in their fraud dept that they gave us, they unblocked her card (said it would take about 10 minutes to filter through their system), she went to a cash machine in canada a few hours later and was able to get her cash out where 24 hours earlier it had been blocked.

The people who say when they call back and their is no record of anyone contacting them - i imagine that it'll be due to either shoddy telereps not putting records on the accounts, or more likely that the dept that was trying to call you doesn't communicate its account notes with the general one (eg. a computer database in the debt collection dept may well, and quite understandably, NOT cross communicate with a one in customer services - a general cust rep shouldn't and doesn't have need to that sort of info on your account).

I would imagine that this is a number that 'appears' from a call originating from within HSBC ie, its not 'actually' this number that is phoning you, if an HSBC dept tries to contact you but its not answered they leave this 'covering number' as where the call originated from, so that if you call it back you know you missed a call from HSBC - it tells you you dont need to call them back probably because i) the number wont differentiate which department tried to call you and ii) if its important enough (ie you owe em money!) they'll phone again anyway.

Personally, i'd prefer any of my banks/cards to query unusual activity and phone me. Asking straight up for details is dodgy but the rep i spoke with gave reasons why he was phoning (which fitted with what problems we'd had).

In short, this is HSBC phoning you - could be any 'part' of their organisation (which is why cust services may not have a clue) - and if its important they'll try and phone you back.

It strikes me that HSBC have mislaid a large chunk of their user database and someone has set up a phoney database.  I have only had one relationship with HSBC which terminated 2 years ago.  I am currently being phoned up 2/3 times a day and have been for over a month.

I've also been rung several times each day at the same time each day on my mobile and landline. I haven't answered as seeing an 0800 number on the caller id, i don't know who it is. landline is always targetted with dodgy calls.

Seems to be a genuine HSBC number. I was called by this number recently and was asked to "complete" the answers to certain questions, ie they read out the first part of my postcode and i had to complete it.  The guy then tried to sell me a HSBC bank account upgrade, and then some other HSBC products. Poor form i reckon.  I can see their adverts online - if i wanted their overpriced products i'd be ringing them.

3-4 calls a day for 3 days. I have never banked with HSBC yet they ask for my DOB or to speak to my ex flat mate. They even rang my mother and asked her for my mates number and how else they could get hold of me. I'm sure it's a scam

I am amazed at the amount of people that have had this problem after I searched for 08007838422. There seems to be a lot of debate about it, lots of people saying that it is genuine but some people have been contacted and are not HSBC customers.

I have received at least 10 calls from this number in the last 3 days, I have given up answering it after time and time again going round in circles. The caller knows my name and asks me to confirm my date of birth, I refuse, ask what it is regarding, am told I cannot be informed about what it is regarding until I give the personal details asked of me. I am not prepared to do this even if it is a genuine HSBC number because I do not believe in such shoddy practices. Why should I verify who I am when they called me? Why can't they write to me or leave an answerphone message? Why can't they prove who they are when I ask?

When I rang the bank directly at first I was told I had been contacted and referred to a specific department, then I rang that department today and was told I hadn't been, and that there is no problem with my account, which I know as I have been checking it online ever since these suspicious calls.

I would advise people not to bother with HSBC, I have had problems with them before, I have been messed around regarding credit cards, direct debits, and even been accused of lying to the bank, only for them to check their recordings and realise that I was not. At the time I needed the account specifically so I accepted their apology and let it go.

But these calls, which are bordering on harassment, are the final straw, now I will be lodging a complaint and leaving the bank. I advise others to do so too as their practices and the way they treat their customers is appalling and people deserve better. I don't expect my complaint will be taken seriously though as my account is not brimming with money and those are the only people they seem to care about treating well.

I am getting at least 2 calls a day from this number, plus at least 1 call a day from a private number.  I don't answer, because I am usually at work and in any case I despise sales calls and wherever possible avoid giving contact numbers.  Surely, if these were genuine calls where HSBC needed to speak to me, they could leave a message on my voicemail for me to contact them.

Well at least I know what this number is now. I joined the bank just recently and was put in the care of a personal money management advisor there. I was starting to think: with all that's happening in the money market these days why haven't I heard from her? So I did my own research about investments. I guess this is HSBC's answer to my question on advising customers: annonymous calls from their call centre in India! Now that stinks! The funniest thing is I'm deaf - it's difficult enough for me to follow a conversation on the phone let alone from someone speaking rapidly and with a strong accent :(
