I have had 3 missed calls from this number (because, like most people, I work during the day), and I was worried about the fact this number was repeatedly ringing, but not leaving a voicemail message. I asked at work if I should answer an 0800 number. The unanimous answer was no, and someone said to type in the number to Google and this webpage came up. I'm glad to find out who was behind the calls, but would it have been so difficult to say 'This is HSBC / courtesy call, please contact us when you get this' etc. Am annoyed with HSBC: why couldn't they have written? Old-fashioned perhaps, but effective! Thanks to those who have already posted, your comments were very interesting.

This number is an HSBC overseas call centre, in regards with products you hold, or have held with HSBC. It make sense for there to be call centres abroad, considering HSBC is the Hong Kong and Shenghai Banking Corporation, and there main head office is based in Hong Kong. It is also a wolrd wide bank.

The reason that you are asked for your date of birth is so that the HSBC operators can verify that they are talking to the right person. It is under the data protection act that they have to verify you before discussing any account deatails.

And if there is no-one on the other end when you answer, its because there more likely isnt an operator to take the call, and If you either wait long enough you will be connected, or an automated message is played advising you of the situation. You are not charged for this call what-so-ever.

In regards to something I read somewhere, a Bank company is allowed to ring a customer up to 5 times a day, for each product they hold with that company.

I hope this has been of some use to some of you.

called from this number today - british female voice asked for postcode which i gave then wanted my DOB which i didnt give. I asked what it was regarding and she said it was a courtesy call but the info would be posted as i didnt wanna give out private info.  they probably want me to get into some more debt with them so they can bum me for interest.

I had a call from this number yesterday - they claimed to be from HSBC and were asking for some personal information - but only giving a little away - made me quite suspicious.  When I asked for a number I can look-up and call them back on - perhaps via the number on a statement, they said that wasn't possible and they would send me a letter.  I contacted HSBC about this number and I had a reply this morning - "I confirm that 08007838422 is not a HSBC number."

So, BEWARE - this may have been a telephone version of phishing.

    Nick.

Received two calls today from the this number.  I picked up second time to hear a lady with an american/ indian accent.

She said she was calling from HSBC and asked for my date of birth immediately.  I refused to give it and she persisted for it.  I told her I would log on and check my messages online and she said again, that I must give her my date of birth as she needed to discuss a very important personal matter.  I refused and hung up.  I couldn't believe how pushy and rude she was considering she was meant to be representing a customer focused company!

I have since (2 hours after the call) checked my messages folder HSBC online and have none.  I don't trust the caller and will only deal with HSBC with my online message account.

Just had a phone call from them, didnt pick up because i dont like 0800 numbers! Im not going to pick up either. Think its because i am over my overdraft but put some money in my account yesterday to clear my overdraft, so wont be over for long! It annoys me that they keep trying!!

My daughter has an account with HSBC, we can receive up to 8 calls a day from this number (or similar numbers)the caller says they need to speak to her urgently about her account. My daughter has phoned her local branch who say they don't know what it is about.
I decided to answer call number 4 today and I have told them to, sort of 'go away'. The caller then tried to give me a number for my daughter to call, so I hung up. If you don't have caller display, get it. It's well worth the small monthly cost. Why is this allowed to carry on??????????

I've been receiving calls off HSBC on this number for a couple of years now. It drives me insane. It's usually because I haven't paid money into my account for a couple of months, which is a requirement for the account - so it is partly my fault. However, the telephone operators are useless. Numerous times I've answered and they don't say anything and then the phone is cutoff. When I do speak to them, they obviously have a script, which they're incapable of even straying from slightly and have zero initiative. It is incredibly frustrating and every phone call seems to take over 15 minutes, when all they want me to do is confirm that I'll pay money into my account in the next couple of days. It should be done in under a minute.
For example, after going through the initial security questions, I try and speed the process up by saying "Look, I'll pay £xx into my account tomorrow morning in cash. Can we now end this conversation, I'm at work and quite busy". They just ignore this and carry on with their script "Sir, I'll just make a note of that....[2 minutes later]" and start asking ridiculous questions about my account or contact details. I'll answer but then they'll respond with, "OK, I'll just check that.....[a minute later]....Yes that's correct sir" Argghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - I know it's correct!! These are not even security questions. I tend to hang up now as soon as I've told them what needs to be said. Awful, awful service.

I've just received a call from this number (2008-01-22 18:54). No one responded to my "Hello" when I answered it. After finding this site when I searched Google for the number, I just called it back. A pre-recorded announcement plays ... "You were called by HSBC Bank. No further actions is required from yourself and there is no need to return the call". So, what's it all about?

They've been calling my number for the past 2 weeks wanting to speak to my son. Sunday afternoons, late into the evening, they're not fussy when they ring. Yesterday I'd had enough so I reported them to the TPS for 'marketing' calls. I suggest you all complain to the TPS.

I've just had an email back from them, they are going to tell HSBC to desist and remove my number.

Got the 17th missed call from this number today.  Decided to ring up my HSBC phone banking to see what it was all about.

They said it was one of the many promotional arms of HSBC ringing up for offers.  They said the calls are likely to be made to anyone who has given their phone number to HSBC and not specifically requested not to be called for promotions.

So i asked them to remove me from this promotional call list, which was done instantaneously.

So, to conclude, it IS definitely HSBC... but an annoying promotional branch.

If you have telephone banking with HSBC, just ring them up and ask them to remove you from the cold-calling list which they will do happily.  The only reason i stick with HSBC is because their phone banking is efficient and answered quickly anytime of the day!

I have been called 9 times in two days from this number.  If you dail the number back it says you were contacted by HSBC and no further actiuon is required.  I called telephone banking after checking in my local branch that my account was all ok.  They said they had no notes on my account that I had been contacted, I gave them this number and they said they didnt know which department it was and had no way of finding out!!!!!  When I got the 9th call in the evening my husband answeed and it took 3 minutes for the American-Indian lady to finally tell him she was from HSBC.  She wanted account details from me, I promptly told her to shove it as my account was fine and she had no reason to contact me - she then put me on hold to check my account, she then said she didnt know why she was calling me and asked me why I needed to be called...no, REALLY!!!

I have started getting calls from this number today, and have so far had 4. Three I ignored and one I answered and hung up straight away before even putting to my ear.

I'm in debt with HSBC by £170-ish. This can't really be helped at the moment as of my situation and having hardly any money. I'm now in debt by nearly £500 with companies such as gas and electricity. Them adding charges, which I believe are ILLEGAL if they do not inform you of these beforehand, to my account doesn't make this any easier for me!
I shall be writing to HSBC to demand they remove these illegal charges from my account, and then I'd only owe them £100 which would be a lot easier for me to pay off bit by bit.

After reading a lot of these comments, it would seem these callers are very persistent! So next time they call, if I'm not busy in college, I shall give them a good mouthful and hope that this will deter them from calling me!

I have blocked the number from my mobile but still comes up as the miss calls, thank god i'm at work all day so i don't have to hear the house phone ringing all day, no wonder the dog chews the phone wire haha.
