I just received a call from the above number. the person who spoke to me said she is from HSBC. She said me for my DOB and confirm the last 3 characters of my post code. I inquired about opening a new account 2 days ago. so i gave her my DOB n post code. Later i called HSBC helpline and inquired about a call from that number and they said it was HSBC who called. Now if anything happens HSBC is to blame for.

I have been getting alot of calls from this number for the past 3 days and after seeing the comments on this forum i decided to answer.  The guy said he was from HSBC and after asking him several times what the call was regarding he said "it's some business about your banking"...he wasn't very convincing so when he asked for my D.O.B, I gave him a false one.... guess what, he said "that's perfect can I just confirm your post code.."....I HUNG UP!!! Obviously i was very annoyed and angry at this so I rang HSBC and the lady said it is a legitimate HSBC number and they rang about my balance, but i had already spoken to HSBC earlier that day to sort it out..... anyway i put in a complaint with the lady and she said it would take 5 days for it to be investigated.  Can i sue them for this???? I mean i could have been anyone and with them accepting a false D.O.B has to be a MASSIVE breach of security right???? I am so angry with this, how can HSBC allow this to happen.

i have just looked at my mobile and have 7 missed calls from 08007838422. i also have missed calls on my landline. sure feels like harassment. called HSBC customer service and the numpty (albeit english, still a numpty) couldn't tell me if it was a genuine number. i said i wanted to complain, but again the numpty couldn't help and said to ring during 'office' hours.
previous conversations from an indian HSBC call centre were very rude and while a have got into problems, the banking industry is hardly perfect. glass houses and stones come to mind!

I have had 3 calls in the past few days..I know that isn't as bad as some people but anyway. The first call, on Sunday at 20:02 I answered and they asked for someone, don't know the name that was given and I just simply said, no-one here by that name, bye and hung up...they have proceeded to ring me again from this number and from another number..I'm keeping a log of this incase I need to take it any further. The funniest thing is I am not with HSBC, never have been, nor are any of my family. I don't give out my mobile number to any Tom, [***] or Harry and I don't enter it as a contact number for companies unless I have 100% confidence in that company or I have already opted out of Marketing Harrassment.

I have a set a target, if I have 10 calls logged by the end of the weekend, I am going to take this further, probably by ringing HSBC up. We'll see what happens I guess.

I am receiving calls from this number, which I'm not bothering to answer because I have a policy of only talking to people I want to talk to. Curiosity made me Google the number though, leading me here.

I don't, and have never, banked with HSBC so they have no reason to call me. So it's either not them, or they are trying to sell to me anyway. I won't be buying!

Just transferred my bank account to HSBC, and they rang me today.
Really confuse why they do such a silly thing to let customer feel worse of them...

just got a call from this number too.  I let the answer machine pick up and couldn't understand the indian voice at all.  It then switched to an automated message asking me to ring HSBC urgently. No soon as message had ended they called me straight back!  I'm not going call them. There's money in my account so they should have no problems with me.

This number calls me approximately NINE times a day, including Sundays, sometikmes waking me up late at night!!! I wil not speak to them as they barely speak English, I am quite happy to speak to HSBC with regards to my overdraft but I will only speak to someone who speaks plain English & who I dont have to repeat myself to constantly!

If posters bothered to read previous comments, they'd see that there is a very easy answer to dealing with this intensely frustrating problem.  Report them to the ICO - the Information Commissioner

    http://www.ico.gov.uk/complaints.aspx

I reported them a few weeks ago for pestering and my local branch of HSBC were onto it within days and deleted said number from their files.  Obviously India like to pester because they're back again, this time calling on different number so I will now report them again. I'll be back with an update when I get a resolution.

I too got a call from this number the guy at the end of the line asked me whether it was me who was using the card or someone else. I had just purchased a laptop from argos and the guy seemed to know my statement and he stated my previous 3 or 4 transactions and confirmed whether i knew about them. He didnt ask for personal details though. But im still scared.

    ANON again!
By the way when i purchased the laptop from argos, they made me register to a "mastercard securecode" security service. Only after registering I got the call. I think it has something to do with the registration. as i have used my card a lot earlier as well and not once did i get the call, did all of u register to something like that? found on this page..http://www.hsbc.co.uk/1/2/personal/credit-cards/security. If so then i think it should be genuine especially since i was not asked for details on the phone.

A male caller called my home number yesterday evening at 7.13pm. He knew my full name and home address. He said that he is from HSBC and asked me to varify my personal details, such as date birth. As it was not office hour, I did not provide any personal details.

I missed a call from this number on my mobile and later received a call at work advising me that it was HSBC checking if recent internet purchases were genuine or fraudulent. They asked for my DOB but then provided me with other information that only my bank should know to confirm thier identity. During the conversation, the caller said that they had got my works phone number from my wife, but as I am not married, this raised alarm bells.
I later called HSBC to check if the call was genuine and the guy who answered said that there was no record of a call on their system but that it could have come from another HSBC.
    This feels decidedly fishy.

I got a call from this number a few days back, I wasn't asked to confirm any details, but I called the bank (number on back of card) asking who had called me, they verfied it was the fraud prevention department. They said my card had been cloned and wanted to block it and send a new one. Which they did, and I received a new HSBC VISA card yesterday! (I previously had a Maestro Card)

Just had a missed call from this number.
I was issued a new card recently, as the old one expired.
Reading other comments, maybe has something to do with that, maybe a leak?
Seems genuine, but to be on the safe side, ignore it, and keep a close eye on your account.

Called today, a few minutes ago.  The chap announced himself as being from HSBC and asked to speak to either [my name] or [name of someone who hasn't been a director for over a year].  I told them that I had had this conversation with HSBC before, that I had no way of establishing to my satisfaction that he was who he claimed to be, and that we were all reminded constantly not to trust unsolicited calls.  He accepted this, and told me he'd stick something in the post.
This keeps happening even though I've instructed HSBC not to call me in this way.

Called today by the fraud prevention dept. after registering for online secure transactions. They asked me no security questions but did ask me to confirm whether or not 3 recent transactions were genuine.

They also called the number from my HSBC Bank Account, NOT the one I provided on the online form as I gave them my work number on the form but they contacted my mobile number.

Obviously a call of this nature is genuine. No security details have been passed so they can't sell them. They have repeated some of my transactions, which they have access to anyway in the call center and could sell them without contacting me.

If they do ask for your security numbers, they should only ask for AT MOST 2 digits. They will usually say, what is the 3rd and 7th digit of your security number. If they ask for more, refuse and call the bank directly to report a scam.

For those who say that giving a false DOB and having it accepted, this is slightly incorrect and probably only bad wording on their part.

What happens is, they enter your DOB and it verifies it as being a valid entry, but it hasn't yet been checked if it's correct. They will then enter your password or security digits and then click "Confirm". If your details are correct, they progress to another screen which tells them what they need to discuss and has access to more of your account details. However, this is generally only for Credit Inquiries for overdraft breaches. The fraud prevention team has access to your last weeks' worth of statement.

If however, you give them a false DOB and incorrect security numbers and they say "Ok, that's great" or otherwise accept them. Ask them their name in a way like "Oh by the way, what was your name again sorry?", write it down along with the number and call the HSBC fraud team.
