dont worry... this is HSBC. They will need to ask a few security questions such as post code or DOB to confirm you are the account holder as they will be discussing your account. They should never ask for your PIN or the number on the back of the card. The reason they have your phone number is because you give that information to HSBC when you open your account or notify them of a change of details. Before I left to travel to Thailand I notified HSBC of my destination and gave them a current mobile number. My card usage in Thailand was processed without any problems. However when I used my card in Mayalsia I received a call, from the "offending" number asking if the transations were legitimate or not. The Indian woman, who was very polite, said she was from HSBC Fraud Dept and she went on to list the transations on my card. A fraudster would not know my mobile number or all of the transations on my card - some of which were direct debit payments. I think this service is excellent and I have not had any further calls from the number. If you dont believe that the person calling is from HSBC then do not speak to them... however go into a branch the following day and tell them about the call. They will then clarify their concern with your card usage and that should be the end of it. Otherwise you will keep receiving calls from the number until HSBC are satisfied that there has been no illegal usage of your card.

    Stop The Nonsense
Had a maximum of 25 missed calls from HSBC on my mobile as I went £2.30 over my credit card when I forgot their charges.

After 2 months of searching I have found out how to stop them calling you from abroad!

HSBC have a department that deals with this but you need to be put through by a manager of one of the call centres and quote the code : HLC

After a little detective work I found the direct dial : 08455837991 or 08455837992 or 08455837993

I spoke with Mr Chohan who is in charge of what they call TOLs (Take of List)

    Cheers

I am getting several calls a day from this number. I have received two in the last hour and now I'm starting to lose my temper. I have recently closed one bank account with HSBC but if they continue this "technique" of calling then I shall be shifting my account elsewhere.

I had a call from this number today for the first time.

I was very suspicious at first when the lady said she was calling from HSBC fraud prevention dept.

She was obviously calling from a foreign call centre as the line was quite bad which made it more difficult to understand her.

She didn't ask me to confirm any details but said it was something to do with my credit card account. Before actually telling me what the call was about she provided me with various details about my account - recent transactions, my full name, card holders, address etc.

It turned out she was calling because some card numbers have been stolen by fraudsters and my husbands card number was among them. She was checking that all recent transactions were made by us and then asked if it was ok for them to cancel his card and issue a new one.

After the call I realised I had missed a call from them on my mobile and that there was a voicemail message.

The same lady I had just spoken to introduced herself in it and said that there would be an automated message following. This gave me various numbers to contact HSBC on and asked me to do so as soon as I could.

I am grateful to them for contacting me and being so concerned to clarify that my transactions were genuine.

All I can say to people who are receiving a large number of calls from this number is that I understand how careful you have to be with your information nowadays, but do not ignore them - answer them! You never know how important that call might be.

This does appear to be a genuine call from HSBC. I never answer 0800 numbers and so let the machine take it; had a message asking me to call their fraud prevention team on this number. I called HSBC on their main customer number and they confirmed their records showed that I had been contacted.
However, their policy of contacting customers in this manner leaves a lot to be desired - they ask for your full card number or account numbers, your full postcode, and your full DOB. Even if the caller is genuine, the wary customer doesn't know this and is still going to be suspicious. It must cause them needless work as well with people calling to check up on the check up all the time! Surely they could do as other banks do and ask for part of the numbers/postcode etc.

I got a voicemail from this number.  A heavily accented Indian voice said it was the HSBC Bank Fraud Prevention department and asked me to urgently call 08456 052324.  I had just placed an order with Amazon using my HSBC credit card so I did call the number and I found my self talking to another heavily accented (and rather hard to understand) voice which asked me for my full credit card number.  I was a bit concerned but I gave it.  Then I was asked for security information - my date of birth and postcode.  I was even more concerned but I gave this information as well.  It turned out that the call was entirely genuine - they just thought the Amazon transaction looked "odd", so no problem this time.
But what if the caller hadn't been genuine?  An unknown, possibly foreign, caller wanted me to give them personal information and a credit card number. They wanted to check that I was genuine but I had no way of checking that they were genuine.  From my perspective this approach is not very satisfactory.

Just had a call from the same number. Mildly Indian accented voice said she was from HSBC, stated her name, then asked me if I used the Business Banking telephone number. I said 'No I don't' to which she replied 'OK, thank you very much. Bye bye', and rung off. What was that all about?!

    It IS HSBC
Phone thier complaints line on 0800881155 ( business complaints, this may be personal also) or get the complaints number direct from the HSBC website.

I spoke a native English speaking person, based in the UK - now that makes a pleasant change!! I could understand him fist time every time!
The customer (lack of) support number gets you through to NONE native English speaking people based in the 3rd world - don't waste your time there.
Make an official complaint to HSBC, and while you at it complain that cutomer support is not in the Uk and should be.

I got a call from this number asking about a direct debit i set up and they had all the details of the DD, the only reason they called was to make sure i had set it up. So no need to worry.

I was called by the number the day after I tried to do a CHAPS transfer at HSBC.  I couldn't understand half of what the lady was saying because of her incomprehensible Indian accent.  Everything about the phone call seemed dodgy.  In the end I said I wasn't going to tell her anything unless she could prove who she was.  She gave me a reference number and told me to ring HSBC, which I did.  It turns out she was genuine, but the UK HSBC told me that I wouldn't need to ring her back as they could sort it out.

The UK HSBC told me that she was checking to verify my identity for the CHAPS transfer, even though I had gone into the branch the day before with my passport.  The whole thing is really really odd.

If it happened again, I still wouldn't talk to them - I would just ring my UK branch.  Whatever happened to the idea of getting people with clear voices to work in call centres?

    ENGLISH CALL CENTRE
I was infuriated by this number and constant calling. In my dealings with HSBC I was once given this number:

    0845 600 6423

It's the same service, but it puts you through to a UK callcentre. No idea why.
Also, try ringing the welsh language telephone banking and then just talking to them in English, they'll be happy to help as well.

I hope this appears at the top of the thread.

so the assurance given to me was a total lie
a bunch of liers - im so dissapointed
funny thing is the guy who i spoke to was from a UK call centre so I trusted him serves me right !!
why do they hire morons and why cant they train them porperly
simply not to lie to thier customers !

They called my wife this morning on her mobile asking to confirm her identity!!! She refused. A few hours later they called her mobile again asking for me (???) and saying they were from hsbc fraud prevention. The first number came up on her mobile 08007838422, the second call was from withheld number, but I think they were the same people. In both cases they claimed to be from hsbc, but the second time thye sounded more genuine as they said it was fraud prevention. Nonetheless, we refused to speak with them as they couldn't tell us what is was all about. They said they can do a letter which can then be verified by any hsbc branch. I wonder if it comes ???

It is HSBC and they will usually ask you security questions, you wouldnt want someone just calling and talking to the person who answers the phone giving all your personal finance details too would you.

HOWEVER they will help you identity them if you ask without shouting at them, just ask them to part confirm your details (eg. the month of your birthday, the first two letters of your postcode) they should do this and this will help you feel more confident in talking with them.

The other thing to remember is you can always call HSBC back as all contact attempts are noted on your CIS screen, the normal number for them (not 0845) is 01226261010 this is your normal telephone banking line.

They are only doing their job!!

This is HSBC. I got a call from this number today and it was someone saying they were from HSBC and performing a 'random security check' on my account and they needed my postcode and DOB. I of course was suspicious and said I would call him back, he said that was fine and to call the number on the back of my card.

I called the general HSBC customer service number and was told that the call was genuine and I had been called from the security fraud division about suspicious activity on my account and transferred me through. If I was told this in the first place I might have been more likely to co-operate with the first person. Anyhow, got put through and got a bit of a telling off from the person I spoke for not giving out my personal details to the first person who called. She explained that there had been suspicious activity on my account that morning and asked if I had charged two amounts to my card the first for £1 and the second for £144 both to uk shopping websites, I verified that I hadn't and she explained that someone had fraudulently accessed my credit card details and HSBC had declined the transactions and cancelled my credit card. phew! lucky I rung back straight away.

So calls from this number are genuine, however HSBC don't do themselves any favours as the staff from the security fraud department are vague when they ring you up and are located in a call centre in india so english is not always great.

The person I spoke to in the general customer service centre said genuine calls from HSBC are always logged in the system so if you are ever unsure ask the person for their department and tell them you will ring them back but ring the number on the back of your card (not any other number) and ask if the previous call was recorded and to be put through to the department that was calling you.

Had a call from this number, caller identified themselves as being HSBC fraud prevention dept. I know enough to not give out too many details without confirmation, so I said I'd like to ring them back. Phoned number on my card and they were able to confirm the source of the call and transferred me back to fraud prevention. All ok.

I have just received a call at my place of work from some one claiming ot HSBC bank. They asked me for my date of birth which I gave and they then proceeded to give me a number to ring 08456 077 088. I rang this number and they asked me for my card number and date of birth. I gave these as I thought it was genuine call as I had been on to HSBC earlier that morning. They then asked me for my 2nd and 3rd number from my security number. I refused to give them this and asked what the call was in relation to, they would not say. They basically said that they cannot discuss until I give my security numbers. They got very frustarted and said that if I dont give them thte security number then they cannot tell me what the call was entailing. I hung up and contacted my local branch striaght away who basically said that they will cancel my card with immediate effect and get a new one out to em with new account number etc. They said that HSBC would never ask for your card number and that this call was not made by HSBC. This number is a scam!!!
