The reason that you recieve such a high volume of calls, and largley unanswered ones at that, is because the company use an 'auto-dialer' system. This works by querying their database of HSBC customers for certain search criteria (overdue payments, outstanding charges of staying over an aggreed overdraught limit), then automaticaly dialing one that meets sed criteria. The machine may dial more than one number at a time for just one operative. Therefore, if someone answers before you do, you are then cut off, and the advisor speaks to that person. If you are dialed and cannot be reached, the dialer will re-enter you into the queue of people to ring. This is why if you do not take action by going to your bank and resolving the situation, you WILL recieve a barrage of calls from this number indefinatley.

I've had 2 missed calls in the last 2 days from this 0800 number on my mobile and having seen all the alarming stories took the suggested advice and called HSBC on their 08457 404 404 number.  They confirmed that they had not called me and that the 0800 number was not them.  She suggested that if I didn't want to speak to the caller I should answer it and tell them so.  Hmmmmmm, not sure that'll do any good, but at least this website gives me some ideas if I do decide to answer.  Thanks everyone for contributing your examples.  Good luck !

I just received a call from this number... it was the HFC bank checking recent transactions on my card. With just my postcode as ID she repeated back 3 transactions over the last 3 days with the exacting amounts to check that I was making them, which I had. Seems like fraud prevention by HFC to me?

    HSBC: Horrendous Service Bullying Customers
    Thats what it stand for....

They keep calling me on the mobile... sometimes upto 11 times a day, morning till late evening.
Its not always possible to answer as we have jobs to do but when YOU try to call them back the system says “Sorry all our phone banking officers are busy, your call is important to us, please continue to hold the line .. After trying back after a few minutes ...”We apologize for keeping you on hold….please call back later…thank you” Its been 7 minutes and counting for goodness sake…

They claim to be "World's Local Bank", I think it should be the "World's Global Bank" because the calls we receive are from call centres in INDIA with Americanised Indian accent. The folks speak English but sounds Gibberish!!!

As you may be aware China's economy is booming and I wonder what would happen if the calls start coming from China. OH DEAR!!! Brace yourself.

Just received the call....Indian male with heavy accent, sounding far away gave me some blurb about data protection and fraud prevention... then he said my full name and mentioned the last 2 transactions I made on my debit card. He asked me to confirm them to be correct, and although I felt disturbed and suspicious, I obliged. He bode me farewell and that was that!!
I've done some research and after ending up on this site feel 100% sure calls from this number are indeed genuine and normal practice from HSBC.
Nontheless, the whole manner in which this process is conducted is cheapskate, shoddy practice, and damages consumer confidence.
    Nevermind, relax everybody, it's genuine.

Am sick of these people calling me. I have talked to an Indian call centre twice and now they're ringing me again. I'm overdrawn by a long way and unemployed. I keep telling them this yet they will suggest anything for me to get some money into the account - borrowing from friends, taking out a loan (!) or from an overdraft from another account. I'm angry that they call me out of the blue and even angrier that they suggest such irresponsible ways of paying off an overdraft. The moment i can afford it I'm going to close the account even though I've been with them for 12 years. Local bank indeed.

I have also been getting calls from this number 2 or 3 times a day claiming to be HSBD.  Each time he calls I tell him that it is he who needs to verify his details as he called me.

I cant believe this is the real HSBC, I mean surely in these days of fraud HSBC would realise they cannot do this.  I mean have they never seen Phone Jacker for christs sake!

Anyway reading these posts it strikes me that those in favour saying it is a real number could just be part of the scam.

I think I am going to test him next time with a fake date or birth etc. See what happens.

    Re: Harassment by telephone

    ACCOUNT NUMBER: XXXXXXX

    Dear Sirs

I am writing in relation to the quantity and frequency of telephone calls that I have received from your company, which I deem to be personally harassing.

I have verbally requested that these stop, but I am still receiving calls. (Delete if necessary)

I now require all further correspondence from your company to be made in writing only.

I am of the view that your continued harassment of me by telephone puts you in breach of Section 40 of the Administration of Justice Act 1970, and the Protection from Harassment Act 1997.

If you continue to harass me by telephone, you will also be in breach of the Communications Act (2003) s.127 and I will report you to, FOS, OFCOM, Trading Standards and The Office of Fair Trading, meaning that you will be liable to a substantial fine.

Be advised that any further telephone calls from your company will be recorded.

    Yours faithfully,

    [NAME HERE]

The reason you may get calls from this number re: accounts from:

    - HSBC
    - HFC
    - First Direct
    - Marks and Spencer Money
    - The GM Card

is because all of the above are owned or run by HSBC.

The number that called asked for a person I thought I recognised so told them that I was not the correct person.  When I challenged them further they abruptly hung up!  I did have a missed call from them earlier on in the day as well!  They did not mention they were from any company in particular

this number rings me constantly approximately 10-15x per day everyday 365days a yr. iv contacted hsbc who keep apologizing for people ringing me at unearthly hours (7am earliest, 10pm latest) but they dont stop have even considered changing my number. i can never understand them when they are speaking and find them rude when i tell them politley that i cannot understand what they are saying and ask them to put it in writing. this usually ends with them putting the phone down and not much else.

I have been contacted by these people today who asked me for my DOB & postcode I refused as they could not tell me anything that the call was about, they gave me a number of 0800130130 to call. I called this number (they did answer the phone as HSBC, but it could still be a scam) They took my card details and hung up twice. I then called my local HSBC to verify that the number I had called and given my details to was a legit number, they said there are that many departments that they couldnt possibly tell me that. I then called the fraud department who were completley unhelpful and could not do anything to help me verify that these calls were ligitimate. I have only been a customer with HSBC for 2 months and have not had any missed payment or gone over my credit limit. I shall be closing my new credit card account as of today and I will never return. Even if this call was legitimate the customer service is shocking

The previous message is mine so heres whats happened now
I have called HSBC to cancel my card and informed them of what has happened and they have confirmed that 0800130130 is the HSBC new accounts department and were probably offering me further services from HSBC
Still a shocking way to go about getting new business - all this worry for nothing the idiots

I have had numerous calls during the day from this number and have always refused to take the call. On the last occasion an Indian male claiming to be from HSBC asked to take me through security. I declined, saying I had already told his colleagues I would not take these calls. I left a message via my logon on the HSBC website to say that it was (a) either phishing or (b) if genuine and I continued to get the calls I would transfer my account to another bank.  HSBC have failed to reply to my message and today I had another missed call from this number.

I have had numerous calls from the number 0800 783 8422 as many as 10 a day! and have put the phone down every time as I believed it to be a scam where

Having read this and discovered it is actually HSBC calling me, I am very disappointed and concerned that I am contacted in this way especially as I am not a HSBC customer. The people that contacted me also sounded very far away and had an accent that I couldn't fully make out.

I am not happy about being contacted in this manner
