My sister just got a call from this number. They asked for her postcode and her DOB before i snatched the phone off her. Sounded foreign, I immediately thought scam.

Me: "Look whats this phone call about?"
Them: "Its just a courtesy phonecall."
Me: "Right ok so if you are HSBC you should already know this information."
Them: "all this information is available to anyone"
Me: "Anyone can get her DOB? I don't think so"

She then proceeded to tell me if I dialed 1471 I would find out its HSBC. Thats how i found this website.

It seems that people think its HSBC...even still... I find it outrageous them asking this kinda information just for a courtesy call.

this number has been ringing me up to five times a day for the last week but never ringing long enough for me to pick up, when I have tried calling back it says that the number is not in use????!!!! I'm just ignoring it now and hoping that they will take the hint, I'm also waiting for written correspondence as I believe anyone who is that desperate 2get hold of me will write.

Two weeks ago I had a line installed by Virgin. They made a mistake and issued me with a new number instead of tranferring my old one. As a result, over the last two weeks, while I await the change over, the only calls I have recieved on this line have been from this 0800 number. I have no idea who it is. I don't answer calls from an unknown source. Aside from Virgin, NO ONE KNOWS MY NEW NUMBER. So, how is it I am getting upward of four calls a day from 08007838422? It's a scam. Don't even speak to these people. I have no banking relationship with HSBC so where's the link? I'd be interested to know if the other victims of this attempted scam are also Virgin subscribers.

I just received a call from this number too, the guy said he was from HSBC and would not tell me what the call was regarding until I gave him my verification details. I am not giving out my date of birth etc over the phone as anyone could find out my name and who I bank with.

He gave me a reference number for the query so I could go into my branch and find out what they want.. I think this is a safer option than telling a guy in a call centre on the other side of the world all my personal details.

    Several missed calls from 08007838422.

After reading this thread I called HSBC on their standard 0845 number and the operator said they had not been calling my number and there was no indication on my account that they should/would have done so.

This number is definately HSBC, not a scam. The only problem is, like people have mentioned above, its based abroad and they do not have enough communication with our own branches based over here. All the calls are computer generated. I actually used to work for HSBC a few years ago in an inbound call centre based in Edinburgh. This number is a credit collections number so if they are ringing you then its likely that you have perhaps gone overdrawn or something like that. The problem i have with them is that i was dignosed with cancer at Christmas and have obviously been unable to work since due to operations etc. My account suffered as i am not working and can barely make rent so no money goes into my account at the moment. Even though i have explained the situation to Credit Services in Swansea the call centre in India linked to this number constantly calls telling me i'm overdrawn, which i know!!! It's very frustrating as it is difficult enough trying to explain a delicate situation such as mine with a person who understands english perfectly, let alone someone who does not! I can understand everyones anger with them as they never deal with calls well and everytime they do call it seems like a scam. HSBC need to get their act together.

I can confirm that this number is actually a collections line trying to call you.  I know this, because I work in the department myself!

They ask for your DOB and Post Code alone, which abides by security bylaws and isn't enough for someone to commit fraud on your accounts.  What you should be worrying more about is they can see every single dealing going in and out of your bank account and/or credit cards.

HSBC wouldn't have access to any of your Pin numbers, security details on the card, anything of the sort.  That's the only identiy questions they're allowed to ask.

Your better off simply barring the number, or dealing with the call.

    Also, point I'd like to make to previous commenters;

They're legally obliged to only ask for TWO parts of your D.O.B. The entire thing isn't neccisary.  Two parts, and your post code would be enough for them to confirm you are such and such.

Look at it from a business P.O.V.  You don't want anyone simply saying they are suchandsuch and then your eligable for breaching Data Protection laws because they didn't identify the person they were trying to contact.

I recieve calls from this number semi-regularly. Lately I have managed to get myself into a financial position where I will be over my overdraft limit more or less every month.

The puzzling thing is that this number (or anyone from HSBC) doesn't call EVERY time I go over, only every other time.

What I have a problem with is that I can't understand the person talking to me on the phone, and that they always ask me to clarify other details at the end of the call. If they can see all my details, why ask me when funds will be going into my account? They can see when I get paid! They can also see why I have gone overdrawn, so why ask me the reasons??

It also annoys me that when I ring HSBC they have no record of these phone calls! There is something wrong with their internal system, as I have had the same phone call, about the same thing, more than once in the same month!

I tend to end these phone calls as quickly as possible (if I actually get to answer them before they hang up) and I normally come off the phone irate because the person on the other end doesn't listen/can't understand me!!

If I had a choice I would change banks, but unfortunately I don't think any other bank will take me at the moment, due to my current financial situation!

This number called my mobile on 7th April. I was in work at the time and the person left a voicemail message. I just about managed to make out through the voicemail that this person was apparently from HSBC. I never returned the call and they havent of yet called me back, thankfully! Im sure they will at some point though. I don't bank with HSBC so I dont know why they are supposdly contacting me.

This is the genuine number for hsbc debt collection services.  I had to pay some money back supposedly! :-) you dont have to give any major details no card details and i had to go into hsbc to pay the debt.  If you go on their website the number is under their list hope this is helpful Adam.

I've been getting regular calls from this number on my mobile and I usually ignore them because if I do pick up I get silence. They never leave a message and when I dial the number it says that it's the HSBC and that there's no need to take any further action. This makes you think that it's nothing more than a sales call. HSBC have my home address and land line number so would contact me on those if it was important wouldn't they?

Today I tried answering the call and got through to a foreign call centre who informed me it was regarding "an important business matter". I refused to give personal details and asked for a number to call that I could verify from HSBC's main site. The telephone operative refused saying it would not be possible to deal with this matter via another department. He did not share my worries about the dangers of giving out personal account details to an unverified source. When questioned about contact via other methods he said that its best to "try and reach the customer by phone". He told me that if I gave two parts of my DOB he'd tell me the remaining one. I then gave him a false DOB year which he spotted was false and muttered that they'd just send a letter instead!

Thinking that it was after all of that a legitimate call I then called the HSBC using the internet banking helpline number published on their site. They told me that they had no record of the attempts to call me or of the call I just had received from the 0800 number. He went off to check with the department that makes customer calls and to check out that number. He came back a few minutes later and said that there were no records of any department trying to contact me. He then asked me to confirm my DOB as he noted I'd given the wrong DOB before. I did give a false DOB with the caller from the 0800 number which confused me as it seems either the call was a legitimate HSBC call or somebody had tried logging in as me elsewhere! The genuine HSBC representative I was speaking to also told me that number was not one of theirs and that I should not give any personal details to them should they call again. The representative also confirmed that everything with my current account was fine and there were no reasons for HSBC to be contacting me.

I've read the other comments about this number being authentic but the fact that an official HSBC representative reached using the HSBC customer helpline had no knowledge is not good. Either some organisation with access to HSBC some customer details is trying to phish for further information to access my account or HSBC does not tell it's own call centre staff what numbers they own.

Something very odd is going on with this number and/or HSBC!!

definately a fake number. Recieved a text from them to my mobile sayign they were HSBC and i shoudl call them asap. called them a few times but didnt get thru, think theres only one line so they cnt accept to many incoming calls as u normally would as they have no central call centre. a guy then picked up and i asked i was told to call this number, he asked whats ur card details.

    first things first,
    1) i've never ever got a text from hsbc before!
    2) they never ask for my card number, as you usually key that in
    3) the guy sounded funny.
