Had a call from CLC saying I'd won a 7 night holiday and to call this 0800 number, realised probably a scam so told them I would call back

Just received a call telling me I had won a holiday with flights but had to pay airport taxes of £29.50 and must ring 08009889900 within 10 minutes to claim. I do enter competitions so a call is not unexpected, but you will never have to pay any reputable company for a prize. A quick "Google" of the 0800 number told me about the scam .. just as I expected. How can they get away with this for so long?

I just received a phone call by CLC saying that I had entered a competition for a trip to Japan (which did ring a bell) and that I won 7 days to Spain, Portugal or the Canary Islands, all flight tickets and accommodation covered for. The man on the phone was very polite and said that I should call the free phone number 0800 9889900 and quote a reference code in order to be sent the info package through the post. He was not pushy at all. This, together with the free phone no. encouraged me to call the number.

A lady verified my name and surname and age category, asked me if I am married, if my partner and I are home owners and if our combined annual earnings are over £25K. She then said that we qualified for the holiday which was all very nice and exciting. I asked her if she would send the info pack via post. She said that we should attend an "exhibition" first to get the holidays. My partner, who heard that on the speaker phone, did not like it at all. So, I told her that I wanted more information about this "exhibition". She told me she could NOT send anything through post, but she could only refer me to a website: www.exclusivelifestylepassports.com. I said that I'd call back.

We then checked the website and it does not even look like a real website. We ran it through whois.is and the company data are dodgy. Then we googled the tel. no. and here we are, with all the rest of you who have been through this scam.

We advise everybody to call the number back and say that you are not interested to take this offer and most importantly that you want all your personal data and phone number to be deleted from their database under the DATA PROTECTION ACT 1998.

We did that and were reassured that all our personal data would be removed.

I just got a call on my mobile from a with held no. saying I had won a free holiday including hotel and flights and all I had to do was call 0800 988 9900 to claim.

I have not entered any competitions so thought it might be a scam.

This was confirmed when they asked whether I was a home owner and living with my partner...  why would this matter if it was a genuine competition!

Its not a competition but a promotion. I attended the exhibition/presentation.triedget me and my partner to join up to their holiday club. When they were aware that we were not interested and could not be persuaded - also the fact that we did not have any children helped! - they gave me my holday vouchers which amount to approx £70 pounds per person although the destination is one of three and they can't tell you which hotel you'll stay in, just that its "luxury". I was also given £70 pounds worth of theatre vouchers so it wasn't too bad all in all. the exhibition took place about 40 mins by tube from where I live and although the presentation was meant to be approx 2hrs long, I was in and out in less than an hour!! Maybe someone else won't be so lucky - I don't think I'll bother using the holiday vouchers though......

Received call stating had won a luxury holidy for 4 valid for 18 months. Called the 0800 number and the reference quoted, I did not agree to a location and date to collect holiday voucher and so I was told I could not receive anything in the post untill I attend the "seminar" and collect.
I made my excuses and hung up. Ten mins later I got another "witheld" phonecall, which I did not answer!

Literally just received call.... I too have won an all expences paid holiday for me and 3 others.  was given the 0800 no. and a code... shll not bother to call.  I think it's connected to the 'my offers' emails I get and normally delete... last week I thought I'd enter one of the comps and haven't stopped getting cold calls since.  Funniest thing... when I answered the phone the guy at the other end wasn't paying attention and was telling one of his call centre buddied how he 'couldn't be bothered to do this crap any more' and 'would rather be in the pub'.  Doesn't sound like the kind of company you want to trust to me!

managed to get my mobile number. claimed i had entered a competition online (which i have never done!!)and won an all inclusive holiday (for 4 people) valid for the next 18 months. All i had to do was pay taxes, charges etc of £295pp.

If you win in a geniune competition you do not have to pay anything. Big scam....beware!

Had phone call about CLC - won a holiday for 4 with flights, etc. If I rang the number today then they would throw in extra £50 spending money. Emphasised it was genuine - company registered with ABTA. Wanted to know I was  married and a homeowner.

Don't think I'll be ringing back!

Too good to be true - first thing I did was to google the number and arrived here. Was told:
o  Had won "two minute draw" competition
o  Won 7-day holiday, valid for 18 months to either Spain, Portugal or Canaries.
o  Caller was from from CLC

They did have a valid (but rarely used) email address and I do have a vague recollection of entering an online draw, but alas I won't be following the call up.

Thanks to all posters for the sound advice!

Same as above, you gotta love the people that set up this site, because without it a lot of us people would be a lot worse off. Thanks to you all.

Sorry i just posted, but had a great idea.....

When they tell you that you have won a holiday, you should immediately say:

"thank you, my partners just left me, i just got fired and my house is being repossessed, a holidays just what i need".  If they carry on after that, it could be genuine. lol

I received this phone call before (see above: 6 May 2008). This time it was slightly different: they mentioned that I won a competition in a survey that took place on the 6th May(!) and they also mentioned the £19.7....whatever fee. The guy was at a loss when he did not receive the excited reaction he expected and when I confronted him that I didn't intend to attend any "exhibition". He talked to a colleague and came back saying "You only go there to pick up your tickets, you don't attend anything"!

The first time I got their phone call, I thought "shame on me" for being stupid and getting excited with fake holiday promises, but now I am really ANGRY because they keep bugging me and they ignored my and my partner's direct request to be removed from their database.

So, I called the 0800 988 9900 number and told the lady straight away that I received the "competition-holiday" phone call, but I was not interested in any time share (which, btw, she did not deny at all) and I wanted all my data removed from their database. She just said "OK", so I had to be pushy and say "yes, but you need my name and surname and code to remove me, don't you? So, please write them down and remove me straight away".

I want to send an explicit email to the company because I don't trust any verbal confirmations anymore. I found their website: http://www.clublacosta.com/resortshotels.php but they have no email listed, so I am planning to write to them.

Mind you, I found reports on "Holiday Watchdog" where some people who ARE into time share stuff say that they took the deal and had a good time, or got holiday vouchers indeed:
    http://forum.holidaywatchdog.com/Timeshare-&- ... hread-2329.html

Personally, I don't like aggressive marketing and especially when a time share promotion is passed onto me as a straightforward no-strings-attached free holiday.
